I was just wandering around on the AFL Northern Territory website and found these articles about an incident at Marrara Oval during the Round 6 matches on November 6.

From the AFLNT website dated 9/11/04

The banned players are 19 year old David Roe from Wanderers FC and 16 year old Liam Philpott from Darwin FC, who were spectators during the Palmerston/Waratah match.

'The League had no alternative but to ban the players whilst the investigation takes place in the interests and welfare of other patrons', said AFLNT Football Operations Manager Peter Atkinson.

'Crowd attendances are up as a sign that the close football competition and atmosphere has attracted people back to Marrara so it is disappointing that an incident which reportedly originates elsewhere is allowed to put all the good work of clubs and players to waste,' said Atkinson.

'To have allowed the players to continue to play would have possibly created the same situation as that which occurred last weekend and AFLNT is not prepared to take that risk,' he said.

Both players are banned from attending AFLNT and NTFL fixtures until the investigation into the additional incident is completed at which time the players full penalty under the AFLNT Code of Conduct is determined.

AFLNT and the NTFL clubs remain committed to the Code of Conduct and the Zero Tolerance Policy with Atkinson revealing that two spectators had been banned for 3 weeks earlier in the season after one abused umpires after a game and another, a Reserve grade player, jumped the fence to gain ground entry.

And then this...

From the AFLNT website dated 24/11/04

Wanderers player David Roe and four female spectators Jacinta & Teneal Cubillo, Sobhian Philpott and Imogen Briston have been banned from any AFLNT fixtures including junior games for 12 months under the AFLNT Code of Conduct.

A ban on Darwin player Liam Philpott has been lifted on the recommendation of the investigator and he can recommence playing.

A decision about an announcement of any penalties for people involved in a separate incident on the same night outside the main gates has been deferred until completion of police action.

AFLNT Football Operations Manager Peter Atkinson said the actions of those involved in the incident were reprehensible.

He said an incident of this magnitude has an enormously negative impact on the reputation of the league and occurred at a time when spectators and sponsors are returning to the code.

Atkinson said some people may have held the mistaken belief that the incident was nothing more than a minor skirmish between teenagers and does not warrant severe penalties. That is incorrect as the incident had the potential to escalate to a violent all-in brawl and endanger innocent spectators and children.

Atkinson said the fact that the incident has proven to have had its origins elsewhere is of no interest to the AFLNT and in the interests of genuine football supporters AFLNT will enforce the Code of Conduct to the fullest where breaches are proven to have occurred.

Was anyone there that arvo?
