In 1986, Footscray lost to reigning premiers Essendon in Round 3 by 8 points. In the dying minutes, which Bulldog missed a shot for goal from 30 metres out which would have put them in front? And can anyone remember what the talking point was at the end of the match???
No idea who missed the goal, but I'm pretty sure that was the game where Tim Watson did his knee. Was that the talking point?

Simon Beasley ?
Dunno what the talking point was though ?

I reckon it was (Super) Mcpherson.
But Im gonna take a wild guess and say Mark Hunter!
Waltzing Woof Biscuit

It wasn't Beaza, Super or Hunter (who I think first played in 88),
If Watson did do his knee in this game (and I honestly can't recall), then that certainly would have been a talking point, but not the one I was refering to.
No clues at this stage about the player. Re. the talking point, it had plenty to do with the scores.

Bit before my time but i'll have a stab............
Dougy Hawkins and the scores were stuffed up, wrong score on scoreboard.....etc

Waltzing Woof Biscuit

Dougy never would have missed it!!! No, the scores weren't actually stuffed up...actually, think more along the lines of Dogs v Essendon last year.

I cant think well!
Im gonna have another guess and say Peter Quill!
Waltzing Woof Biscuit

No, not Quilly. OK OK OK... here's a clue. He was playing his third game for the Doggies.
Er gee, I just noticed, 300 posts da da da da da da

Aint Choco I'm afraid Topdog. He started in 83. The player in question was renowned for being a good kick during his career. There's a clue. He played long enough to have a 'career.'

Jeez WWB, all the chemicals I've ingested since 1986 find me out sometimes and I just can't remember things.
Now lets think. Two players we picked up in '86 were Tony MacGuiness and Murray Rance. I think that Rance played a lot up forward in his first few games and missed a lot of easy shots. So my guess is Murray Rance, with a long shot being Tony Buhagiar.
Cant remember what the score related controversy was.

If he was a good kick then I'll change my guess to Macguiness.

So there you are LY!!
Well, all of those chemicals didn't blunt your recollections too much. Except that you got it wrong :D
Na, that's a bit unfair. We did pick up Rance and MacGuinnes in 86, plus a few other discards like Max Crow, Andy Preston and Micheal Rolfe. And by crikey did Rance miss some easy shots. But it wasn't him, it was Tony.
OK, re. the talking point. Do the names Simon Madden and Brad Hardie mean anything?

Aaah, you changed your mind whilst I was typing my response. You're not watching the security cameras in the computer lab at Deakin Uni. by any chance are you LY?
Captain Sensible
14 Aug 2001, 19:47
Given that I have deferred this semester, you can be sure that the last thing that I would be doing is watching CC cameras at another Uni.
Hmmmmm Hardie and Madden aye? Well it wasn't the match that Hardie waved his jumper above his head-that was at VFL Park.
I dunno, bloody chemicals!:)
BTW how funny was Andy Preston. I can remember him sitting on top of Rod Grinter just bashing his head into the ground. Couldnt kick, mark or hanball but boy could he break heads.
Max Crow could have been really good except for that accident.

Details of the game are slowly filtering back to me. It was hot I can remember, I remember more about the match later in the year at Windy Hill.

You've deferred??????????????? So what's LY up to now, eh?
Brad did his jumper waving in Round 21 that year. But the incident in Round 3 occurred after the siren...
Can't remember Preston smashing Grinter, but get all warm and tingly just thinking about it!!
Max Crow's accident?

I am very happily being a full time dad and a part time respite worker.
Max Crow lost half a testicle halfway through his first season with us and had to give the game away. Shame really.

You cant be serious  Then whats SOS doing still playing
Crow got injured in Round 1 vs St Kilda, played 12 games for us that year.Think he retired end of season .

This is a bit long ago for me, but seeing nobody else has got it, i will have a stab. I remember a game against Essendon when i was young where Peter Foster had a set shot that was clearly a behind awarded as a goal. He went up and offered his hand for the goal umpire to shake. As i remember there may have also been another behind awarded as a goal that day. That would explain the score problem and the talking point.

Good try sigscotty. That game was at the Western Oval in 1991. The game in '86 was at VFL Park. It has something to do with a kick after the siren...

Wow, 1991! Bit later than i thought. Will do some research now, you have got me curious.

I'll guess Madden kicked a goal after the siren & Hardie claimed that he touched it.
Waltzing Woof Biscuit

Sorry Pizza - it was something like that.
OK - here's what happened. The final siren went and the Dons had won by two points. Simon Madden had the ball about 60 out from the Bomber's goal, and promptly let loose with a kick into the forward line towards the sticks. The ball landed well short of the goals, and Brad Hardie went to 'mop up.' However, this was in the days before the second siren, and the crowd had already deluged the ground. Hardie kept on running into spectators as he chased the ball, and couldn't touch it before it bounced through for a goal. The commentators labelled it as a bizarre and disgraceful incident, which just might make a difference in terms of percentage at the end of the year. It didn't - the Doggies had a poor season :(
