I have heard on the radio that Jhon Northey is looking at being the next coach at Freo. I believe he will have talks with the clubs on the coaching issue. Would you be happy with him as coach?

Northy has had some reasonable results with AFLQ team Broadbeach. He does however appeared to have aged quite quickly since leaving the Lions. For those intersted here is a pic taken a few weeks ago at a local game...

Northey sure does have the runs on the board, but he strikes me as very much a 'passion' coach, with little tactical nous.

Whilst this may work to an extent, I think it grows tired quickly with the players, and also won't get you to the ultimate prize - which is what we are all competing for anyway ...

However - that said, in Freo's situcation just making the finals would be a start, so if a Terry Wallace flagged definate interstet to take ont he job in say 2 years time, some old fashioned fire-in-the-belly until then we could do alot worse!

On our Bomber board they are saying Mark Harvey was interviewed on a show last night & said he would be interested, I hope not, couldn't bear to see Harvs anywhere else but Bomberland.
Still he would make a great coach for the Dockers.

If a relatively young coach such as Peter Schwab has heart problems at a successful club like Hawthorn...heaven help John Northey if he comes to Freo...

Shaun McManus could possibly face a prison sentence if Northey carks it in the coaches box.

John Northey was a pretty good coach in the 80s and 90s

This is his coaching record:

Team Year Win/Loss/Draw

Sydney 1985 - 6/16
Melbourne 1986-1992 - 90/76/1
Richmond 1993-1995 - 32/34/1
Brisbane 1996-1998 - 29/28/2

Win percentage of 49.84%

Ladder positions of teams he has coached

2nd - 1
3rd - 2
4th - 4
8th - 1
9th - 1
10th - 1
11th - 2
14th - 1
16th - 1

He took Melbourne to their first grand final in 24 years in 1988 - and also took them to their first finals campaign and out of the duldrums in the late eighties.
He took Richmond to their first finals campaign for 13 years in 1995 and did pretty well without Richardson.
He also had good success at Brisbane until they crashed to the wooden spoon in 1996.

Hes a good coach at getting teams into the finals with average to reasonable lists

Dockers could find a lot worse coaches around than Northey

heh, good call Esperito!

I'm not totally convinced about Northey - if he was so good why is he the Dale Kickett of coaching? If he went to the Dockers that would make it the 5th AFL/VFL club he would of coached.

I seem to recall that Northey walked from Richmond because they wouldn't give him a >1 year contract. Even though Northey was successful there, there was some sort of attempt to get Sheedy back to Richmond and Northey was just supposed to be warming the seat until he arrived

Northey's been around a bit, but has been out of AFL for 2-3 years (?). I echo the previous caller's comment about passion without particularly good footy sense - and this will be worse by now.

I admire him for putting his hand up, but the Dockers should say no thanks - too old and out of touch with modern footy. Harvey would be a good pickup IMO

John Northey is past it now, there's no way he'd be the coach at Freo next year.

I really hope we end up with Mark Harvey.

My second preference is John Worsfold, only for the added bonus that it would hurt the Eagles supporters to see him in Docker gear :)

I don't hate the eagles, never have never will.

Though I am building a healthy disrespect for supporters of South Australian clubs at the moment.
