Not content with renaming their home ground , the Perth Demons are to be called the "Home (building society) Demons" for $50k a year .
Could you handle your team being renamed . Considering the West perth Falcons nearly self destructed when they tried to rename them the Joondalup (where they've relocated) Falcons for $60k .

I read this in the West today. Going way too far for sponsorship dollars, perhaps it saves the club, but at what cost?

Big shame that a lot of these proud old clubs have been forced to prostitute themselves to the dollar to stay in existence.
If that's the way football is headed, then I really want no part of it in the future.

The question I have is, are they being called the Perth "Home" Demons, or are they dropping the name Perth altogether? I know in the TFL most clubs were know as "Name"-"Sponsor"-"Nickname".
North Launceston "Nubrik" Robins, Hobart "Kwikasair" Tigers, New Norfolk "ANM-Coca Cola" Eagles, Glenorchy "Pasminco" Magpies, North Hobart "Schweppes" Demons etc.

I know that North Hobart traded thier name of 118 years in for sponsorship dollars in the Statewide league in 1999 (renamed themselves the Hobart Demons) and a large percentage of thier members and supporters cracked the shits and walked out.

When will these fools running football ever learn that by stuff-arsing around with clubs traditions they will kill them - there's been too many examples of this to plead ignorance on the matter.

From what it says on footygoss, they will be known as the Home Demons, the Perth name has been dropped all together.

I hope they die in the arse now.

Why not go one further and call themselves "Mental Home Demons"? I've never heard of anything so stupid.

they will be the Home Demons , thus they will always be the home team .So they'll never get to call the toss , as the away team calls !!

Does this mean now West Coast Football Club can now be re-named Perth Football Club?

Imagine barracking for them at a match - "GO HOME!!!!!!!"

Like I said a few posts back, this was done for many years in the old TFL, but never to the point of having the team name on the scoreboard replaced by the sponsors name.

The signs on the perimeter fences outside the grounds would read something like "Queenborough - Home of the Wrest Point Seagulls"

Or the next homegame board outside a ground would read "Next Home Game - Nubrik Robins vs Hobart June 25th"

The club notes section in the weekly program would represent teams as the "Fairford" Hawks (Burnie Hawks) or the "Nubrik" Robins (North Launceston) so it really is something that has been going on for more than 15 years now. And I don't recall anyone jumping up and down at the time when it first started happening.

But I would draw the line at actually going the whole hog and renaming the club after a sponsor.

Stupidist thing I have ever heard! What about the tradition, I guess that doesn't count for anything these days, as we have seen at Hobart. I really can't believe it how could you rename a club that has the history of Perth(or any other WAFL club for that matter) and call it Home.

To me they will still be called the Perth Demons and i think most people will still call them that. This "HOME" will only be used in official capacities and will die off after the 4 years is finished. Just like when we called it "Westar Rules", everyone still called it the WAFL.

They are selling everything at the club and unfortunately it is the only way for battling teams to go. Wouldnt be surprised to see it more often in the future but heres hoping that we wont.

Thank christ East Perth wont sell their name, too much history there although we did get kicked out of Perth Oval for sweet FA and there went a heap of history there...

WC members actually did a vote on this after those responsible realised the Perth Eagles went better against the Freo dockers , however the renaming was rejected.

WC members vote, I'd love to see that.

The ABC who broadcast the WAFL games will call them Perth or the Demons. Under their broadcasting charter, the ABC are not allowed to use commercial names.

well in that case, I don't get it... If the WAFL is largely promoted by the ABC coverage, and the ABC can't call them Home Demons... then how is the name change really of longer-term benefit?

I wonbder how they deal with commercial sporting teams like the Perth Glory and Brisbane Broncos (who are not only a commercial for profit company, they are listed on the stock exchange).

'And in soccer news today, the team based in perth that plays soccer in the NSL won 1-0 last night at a rectangular stadium in East Perth'.

Freo can't be referred to publicly as the Dockers , as that is a trouser trademark . so they must be referred as Freo or "Fremantle Dockers "

its a very rugby orientated thing, plenty of teams local to sydney have sold out in this way.the sad thing is my club has an extremely marketable name(Norwest Jets- in my area there are at least 3 dozen businesses that start with "Norwest", plumbers, landscapers, sparkies etc, there is even a Norwest Business Park up the road with some of the biggest multi national companies in NSW,but can we get a corparate dollar?i think we need more to offer at this stage, but to have a team that plays all over the sydney basin with a name that can be used by many companies within 15km of our training facility, well it does tend to cripple clubs a bit.it doesnt help when a prospective sponsor says "you play that VFL game do ya?" thats sydney for ya.
