View Full Version : Andrew Gilham
After being talked up as a huge national draft prospect, he doesn't go in the rookie draft either.
Can he still make it as an AFL footballer?
Who else do you reckon are the unlucky players not to be drafted or rookied.

He was only ever talked up as a late draft chance.
He was only ever talked up as a late draft chance.
But I'm guessing most people would have thought he would be on a club's list right now.
Suprised Port didn't take him to join brother Stephen.

Versatile player, surprised he wasn't picked up. His height is probably what hurt him in the end. Not good enough as a midfielder and not tall enough for a KP. Probably similar to Toovey in that regard.

Could be avery handy player in a forward pocket in the way Bradshaw is at Brisbane. One of the best marks going around for his height. Draft camp results would have hurt his chances.

Like all those that missed out on getting drafted, if these want to make it into the afl they will have to prove that they can mix it against men and figure highly in their clubs best and fairest.

Alister Neville should be on an afl or rookie list....he made the all australian amateur team this year as a 19yr old.... there is a far too much weight put on athletic ability nowadays (which cost Al in the end)...he is a natural footballer who is a better player then many of the players who got picked up this year....

He is a tallish flanker.
Wasn't suprised he didn't get drafted but i thought that he would of got a chance on a rookie list.
He will probably go play in the VFL.

Would be a good addition to the Borough.

Andrew was very unlucky I thought, I was confident he would be picked up
Although it is good news for AFL goal umpires, they dont have to put up with his biased whingeing about every decision that goes against him :p Even in 100 point wins he found a decision he didnt like :D
Considering the players the pies picked up in the rookie draft i'm suprised Gilham was picked up, a similar player yet better than those picked
Be interesting to see if he goes to the VFL or possibly plays for the Friars U/19 side.

Don't be silly ed, i hardly think he'll play amateurs for the Friars! He is definately playing at Port next year and if he is able to demonstrate his true ability against men, i wouldn't be surprised to see him get his chance in 2006.
He is the sort of player who with a solid pre-season, will be able to consolidate a spot in Ports first 18 which will afford him the opportunity to test his true wares.
As i have mentioned previoulsy, i think in time Gilla will be able to forge out a successful football career and hopefully at the highest level.
And if not he will always have his kickboxing career to fall back on! :D
Good luck next year Gill! :)

Will definitly impress with the Borough, and is a big chance for a rookie spot in 2006.

Toovey didn't go in the Rookie Draft because he's bottom age, and so he's eligible again next year. Bottom age players don't go into the rookie draft.

Bit too much Fanta there I think Ed, Port Melbourne looks more likely to secure his services then the Friars 19's. I'd be shocked if he ended up there.

Good overall player but just wasn't tall enough or quick enough to catch the eye of the recruiters.

I dunno, I was thinking more about others actually. I find it suprising he didnt go in the draft though.
Playing at Port is he? Wonder if the Kangas have any say in that?

Good enough player to get drafted but clubs where worried about his fitness, his draft camp results were his best for the year. only reason he is not on a list is because clubs dont believe he has the endurance to play afl football.

I think he was injured around the time of the draft camp if memory serves me correctly. Doesnt help much an injured foot when trying to prove fitness
I think he would have no problem with endurance

Had no injuries going into the draft camp but he did not have a full pre-season at the start of the year which hurt him in the end..

Didn't he make the Vic Metro Squad?
Made the squad, but was injured.
gilham had an interrupted pre-season and wasnt able to get fully fit. he broke his finger before the vic metro trial games and was unable to play. if he had of played no doubt would he have made the squad. im a big fan of gilham and will prove himself as a footballer in the years to come. once fully fit he will be a very versatile player as he has very clean hands and very good skills and has exception natural talent. many beleive he has more raw talent than his older brother stephen but unfortunatley for andrew has a different body shape to his older brother. he will down playing at port next year hopefully in the seniors and will be able to show the AFL clubs what they missed out on. as previously said no doubt if football doesn't go his way he can definately fall back on kickboxing or take up being a rockstar!!
