Kangaroos v. Adelaide
Friday, 17 August 2001
Colonial Stadium 7:40 PM

This is another one of those "crunch games" involving two teams
vying for that 8th spot on the ladder. The winner will be the new
favourite to make the finals, that is, unless Collingwood beats
Essendon. Adelaide are on 10 wins while the Kangaroos are on 9
wins and are about 6% lower. Adelaides run home includes Hawthorn
and Fremantle. While the Kangaroos will face Richmond and
Collingwood.

Adelaide's number 1 ruckman, Clarke, looks likely to miss again
which means it will be all up to Rhett Biglands. Biglands beat
both Carlton ruckmen, Allan and Porter last week. He will be up
against the very tall Burton. Meanwhile the Kangaroos will lose
Mick Martyn with a hamstring injury. King is in some doubt but
should play.

There are some top players who are in form for both sides.
Kangaroos players such as Harvey, Grant, Simpson, Archer and King
will need to put in similar performances to last week. While the
same goes for Adelaide's McLeod, Ricciuto, Goodwin and Hart.

The Kangaroos should win this game by about 4 goals. They have
more firepower than Adelaide. Their forward line has talls such
as Rocca, McKernan and Carey, and smalls such as Harvey, Grant
and Pickett. Apart from that thrashing in Sydney they are in
pretty good form. While the Crows had a great win last weekend in
beating Carlton I don't think they can back it up this week.

Tipping
Richmond to beat West Coast by 20 points
Essendon to beat Collingwood by 30 points
Port Adelaide to beat Geelong by 40 points
Western Bulldogs to beat Hawthorn by 10 points
Carlton to beat St Kilda by 40 points
Sydney to beat Melbourne by 45points
Brisbane Lions to beat Fremantle by 50 points

Richmond v. West Coast
Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM
Saturday, 18 August 2001

The Round 20 clash between Richmond and the Eagles could not see
2 teams with a more differing story.

The Tigers will enter only their second finals series since 1982
whilst the Eagles will miss out on the Finals for the second year
in a row after playing September football every year from 1990 to
1999.

For the Eagles, their dynasty of the early 90s is slowing
disappearing. Age has wearied them and basically Glen Jakovich
and Drew Banfield are the only survivors from that halycon era.

The retirement of Dean Kemp today was only another reinforcing
that a chapter of football has been finished.

The Tigers on the other hand are trying to create a dynasty of
their own. A win here will give them 13 for the season and a
small opening of a top 4 spot. With North and Essendon to come,
they must win here to have any chance at all.

Matthew Richardson is playing well as the old firm of Matthew
Knights, Wayne Campbell and Nick Daffy.

For the Eagles, their lone shining light has been Ben Cousins. In
a beaten side, he has realy had his colour lowered and in a poor
team should poll highly in the Brownlow.

Tip: Richmond by 60 points

Collingwood v. Essendon
MCG 7:00 PM
Saturday, 18 August 2001

Collingwood host Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night, in a
match that could attract as many as 85,000 specatators to the
hallowed turf. I don't see too much point in talk about the match
from a strategic point of view because the smug Essendon
supporters wil take it for granted that they will win, and the
misguided Collingwood supporters won't give as much thought to
the result as they will to who has more crowd support on the day.

So I ask you, the average Joe/Joan as a reader to consider the
possibilities when you rock up at work or school on Monday...

Daniel the Bomber fan : That was our ninth 56 point victory over
Collingwood in our illustrious history as the number one club in
the competition.

Nafan the Pie fan : Who cares, we got 87,000 to the game and when
it was your home game you got less so obviously we have more
supporters.

Neutral fan : zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Daniel : But a nationwide poll said we have 789,000 supporters to
your 642,000.

Nafan : But youse are all bandwagoners and wouldn't know what it
was like to support a team through the tough times.

Neutral fan : zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Daniel : But we have never had a premiership drought of more than
19 years,
because our culture is built on success.

Nafan : It just shows you're bandwagoners who are all under 16
years old and jump on because of Hirdy and Lloydy.

Daniel : So how old are you and who are your favourite players?

Nafan : I'm 14 and my faves are Nafan Buckley and Chris Tarrant.
They are the bestest.

Neutral fan : zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Daniel : Which proves that when we were 14th in 1997, we had big
crowds and are not a band wagon club, In fact we have no
bandwagon supporters at all, and we once drew 217,000 to a home
game at Windy Hill against Namibia in a world cup qualifier.

Daniel : zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Neutral fan : zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Daniel : umm... 16-14. Hello? Anyone there? You guys still awake?

Everyone : zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So you get the message. This is what you can expect when you
front to work or school on Monday. Nobody will be talking about
the game itself - it will be a case of mine is bigger than yours,
we have more money, more fans, whatever, but if you don't barrack
for Essendon or Collingwood you won't give really a stuff. If you
DO barack for them, you will only be interested in your own
opinion, that of course being that your team will win and will
have the largest support base among the crowd so there goes any
rational and thought-out basis for a match preview.

What we face on the weekend is a dull match with a pretty big win
to the Bombers. What we face on Monday at work or school is a
childish and banal conclusion to a weekend which could shape the
finals, with two of the most ignorant supporter groups shouting
over eachother in luchroom banter that would make an episode of
"Hey Dad!" seem witty and entertaining. Have a nice weekend, all,
and enter your Monday with trepidation.

THE VERDICT : Essendon by 91 points.

Other tips : Kangaroos, Richmond, Port Adelaide, Carlton, Western
Bulldogs, Sydney, Brisbane.

Hawthorn v. Western Bulldogs
MCG 2:10 PM
Sunday, 19 August 2001

What more incentive do the Woofers need? Not only does club
stalwart and all-round nice guy Chris Grant line up for his 250th
game for the Bullies on Sunday, but the Dogs also need to win if
they have any chance of taking in the September sunshine on a
football field rather than a golf course.

Unfortunately for the Dogs, they come up against Hawthorn, a team
that is giving them considerable trouble at present. The Hawks
have won the last three meetings between these sides, and the
Dogs must go back to 1998 for their last win over Hawthorn, which
was at some place called Waverley with some bloke named Dunstall
dobbing eight for the Mayblooms.

The Hawks are light years away from those one-man forward line
days, and it is in this area where they seem to give the Dogs the
most trouble. Even with Nick Holland missing for most of the
year, the Hawthorn forward line still manages to take on the
appearance of a basketball starting five compared to the midget
Bullies. With Nathan Thompson and John Barker in the key slots,
and each of Ben Dixon, Trent Croad and Kris Barlow clocking in at
6'2" or better alongside them, the Hawks are very tall, yet
surprisingly agile, in their forward half.

The Dogs will have to counter this height advantage with some
shrewd positioning if they are to win. With Matthew Croft in
some doubt with his knee problem, the defensive duties will fall
to the likes of Kingsley Hunter, Ben Harrison, Simon Cox and
Trent Bartlett. These men must stand up against their bigger
opponents if the Dogs are to restrict the Hawks to a losing
score.

The teams match up pretty evenly elsewhere. The Bulldogs have a
strong midfield, but somewhat on the smallish side. Hawthorn's
on-ballers have copped plenty of flack over the past two years,
but any on-ball line-up with Shane Crawford, Daniel Harford and
Joel Smith firing in it will be hard to beat.

The Dogs' trump up forward is Chris Grant, but he faces a
bewildering array of possible opponents, including Jonathan Hay,
Jade Rawlings, Croad, Smith or others. So the ground level
forward for the Bulldogs will have to kick the winning score.
Expect Simon Garlick to take either Rayden Tallis or Luke McCabe
back to the goalsquare and try to steal some six-pointers.

On last week's form, it's impossible to pick the Canines. They
were deplorable in getting wiped by Collingwood, while Hawthorn
were barely extended in braining the woeful Demons by 14 goals.
Even taking Hawthorn's notorious inconsistency into account, it's
hard to see the Dogs turning their form around enough to
challenge the Hawks.

Hawthorn by 37 points.

Lions

Sydney v. Melbourne
SCG 2:10 PM
Sunday, 19 August 2001

Hard to believe just 16 rounds ago Melbourne came from behind
against the Swans at the MCG to snatch an unlikely victory. At
the time Melbourne looked shaky, and Joseph Gutnick had just
announced his plan to sweep the board clean of pro-merger
members.

But who would have predicted the horrible slide the Demons have
found themselves in? Sitting 13th, already well out of finals
contention, 2001 has been another shocker.

Sydney on the other hand were also struggling after the Melbourne
loss. A 5 game losing streak early in the season had people
questioning their finals credentials. But they have turned it
round in recent weeks to be one of the form sides of the
competition. Last week saw a heartbreaking loss to the Bombers by
2 points after leading all day.

A win last week would have seen Sydney in 5th - instead they are
7th. A win this week is necessary if they are to have any hope
of hosting a home final. That's why I have no doubt they will
thrash a totally dispirated Melbourne outfit.

Melbourne were deplorable last week against the Hawks,
particularly with their disposal and marking of opponents. At
times they seemed to be nothing more than red & blue witches'
hats as Hawthorn streamed down the field.

Apparently a few players were told before the match that the club
was thinking of trading them. If it was done to inspire them, it
had the opposite effect.

Sydney appear the better side all over the ground. The likes of
O'Loughlin and Goodes will be far too much the struggling Demons
backline to handle. David Neitz is not a backline player, nor is
Shane Woewodin, and hopefully Neale Daniher will at least try to
win the game by playing them at centre half forward and on the
ball respectively.

The ruck is another area of concern, with Jason Ball finally
playing to his potential, and Jeff White obviously struggling
with injury.

Sydney may not have the best list in the AFL, and their skill
level is certainly questionable at times. But their work ethic
and pressure on opposition is close to the best in the league,
whilst this is the area where Melbourne are almost worse than any
other side.

That's why Sydney will win this game, and win easily.

Verdict: Swans by 66 points

Other games:
Kangaroos by 14
Richmond by 43
Carlton by 38
Hawthorn by 6
Essendon by 34
Port by 50
Brisbane by 41

Fremantle v. Brisbane
Subiaco 2:30 PM (4:30 PM AEST)
Sunday, 19 August 2001

Brisbane are undoubtedly the favorites and will be going into
this game with some very impressive odds. That is fantastic for
the club, considering last week they equaled the club record of
ten wins on the trot the longest made by any club so far this
season. Even the fact that they are making the longest journey
interstate this week hasn't changed anyone's minds that a
Fremantle win would be a HUGE upset. But that's what odds are
made for, to be broken.

Fremantle will come out fighting without a doubt. Just two weeks
ago they brought up their first win of the season in another
match they were not expecting to win. The other side (Hawthorn)
were very firmly placed on the ladder and Freo were able to show
that they may be struggling, but that doesn't mean they are gone
by any means. They crowds may be smaller than they have been in
previous years, but the Dockers faithful will be out to try and
boost their side to a second win for the season.

Brisbane are ready for the finals. They have all of their top
players back from injuries and the only major injuries now are
the players from the reserves side. Jason Akermanis was the only
player to have a question mark over whether he'll play after he
bruised his foot last week against the Tigers. Michael Voss
really lead the way last week when he sat on the bench for
periods during the game and yet managed to pull up an amazing 30
possessions. Another major positive for the Lions last week was
Robbie Copelands rising star nomination last week when he kick
three of the most important goals of the match. It seems that
every area of the Lions side is peaking and yet another example
of this was the inclusion of Justin Lepitsch into the side last
week and he proved to be back on song again.

Putting everything that has happened this season aside, both
sides will be read for the clash and if history repeats itself,
the clash will be very close and a pleasure to watch

My tip, can't go past the lions winning their 11th and improving
the record they equaled last week.

5) The Quick Snap

Code Of Silence
Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker'

Officially, the collision between Lance Whitnall and Tyson
Stenglein during last Saturday's game at Football Park was
'accidental' and 'not outside the rules of the game'.

It would appear that the 'honour amongst thieves' mentality is
alive and well in today's AFL. The 'code of silence', where
players say nothing in order to avoid incriminating players at
other clubs, continues to exist.

And, despite all efforts from the AFL hierarchy to eliminate it
from today's sanitized version of the game, players still don't
like 'dobbing' on fellow players.

Instead, they would rather wait for the opportunity to square
things up next time the two teams meet.

Eyewitness accounts from spectators at the Adelaide vs Carlton
game indicate that Whitnall lined up Stenglein from behind and
ran through him, knocking him unconscious in the process.

Because the ball was 40m away and Whitnall came at him from
behind, Stenglein had no idea that Whitnall was coming, and
consequently has no memory of the clash.

This is the type of incident that the 3-umpire system and video
reporting were supposed to help eliminate, yet none of the
umpires saw the clash, and it wasn't captured by any of the TV
cameras.

And, of course, none of the players saw a thing. Not even Darren
Jarman or Evan Hewitt, who both remonstrated with Whitnall
immediately after the incident.

Wait until these two teams meet again - Whitnall will almost
certainly be a marked man, and the entire Crows' backline will
take any and every chance to even up the score.

If the AFL is serious about eliminating the 'code of silence'
from the game (and the resultant squaring up), they need to first
clean up the amateur leagues, as this is where the culture is
indoctrinated into players from an early age.

It is already too late once players have moved up from amateur
clubs to the elite level, as the reluctance to incriminate fellow
players has already been bred into them.

Grass roots is where they need to fix the problem, and regulating
at AFL level is only treating the symptom and not the cause.
