No, for them to be the second best in the world then most players in the A team would have to be regulars in other test lineups which is something that wouldn't happen.

If we're talking Test cricket, I don't think so.
I can't see the Aus A bowling attack taking 20 wickets against some of the test nations going around. Batting would be OK, but still wouldn't measure up against India, for example. They would probably draw many of the games our Aussie side wins.
In the one dayers, things are a little closer. We would have a side capable of chasing almost any tally our bowling gave away against most attacks in the world, but the side would be more prone to collapse. I'll still say no.

1 day, the A side is easily the best, after Australia.
Test wise we could get 20 wickets. i rate India as the no. 2 side (overrated english hacks) bu i reckon Aussie A would pip them.
Tait is as good as anyone going around. McGill has a better strike rate than Warne I beleive. Breet Lee would be expensive but may get couple wickets... Not to mention the likes of Lewis, Nichloson, Rofe, Bichel etc....
Our bowling deapth is underrated imo.

Except when we needed bowling with McGrath/Warne out and we looked second rate.

If you take bloke which have 1000 test wickets you are always going to look weaker.
On a side note the time off for both of them will extend their carrers quite abit I reckon

Yes, quite easily if the best team was nnamed (ie - Lee, Elliott, Mahar, Blewett etc).

Agreed. Most teams need at least 3 standout players and I don't think an Australian A team would have them.
For a start who would be the openers ? I suppose Elliot and Maher
The middle order would probably have the likes of Hodge, Katich and Watson in there somewhere.
The kepper perhaps Haddin.
Spinner would have to be MacGill and we know he struggles against the best line-ups. A couple of other options.
Tait is the standout quick so we would have a decent pace bowling line-up but as you pointed out 20 wickets is a big ask.

Stuart is a very good bowler that would walk into most lin ups, bar Australia.

Batting wise they'd come close, but the bowling side of things would bring them right back to the pack.

My initial assessment was probably too harsh but he would not get the support he receives when he has been playing tests for us.
How do you think a 2nd 11 would be structured ?
