View Full Version : The bloke who will wear 17.
Is a two horse race - my sources tell me that Johnson is well regarded but there is a big push for Richo. They don't think that the captaincy will potentially have as big an influence on Johnson as it would on Richo. They expect it to take him to the absolute top level.
My dough would be on Richo.

I've heard Johnson.

If his stint as captain in 2003 is any indication to go by, I'd prefer it if he never reached that 'absolute top level'.
I'd think even the likes of Gaspar would be ahead of Richo in the captaincy stakes. But I won't rule Richo out.

Gaspar needs to get his game back on track. He's been under a lot of pressure and did the right thing by taking a pay cut. Last thing he'd need is the captaincy. Richo to be a mentor to the new recruits and Johnson to be El Capitan, don't rule out Bowden.

As much as I love Richo, I don't think the captaincy is a good idea. Richo performed a lot better last season when he wasn't part of the leadership group.
Sugar Kane for me.

I made a thread about Richo becoming captain about 3 months ago.
I argued that I think we saw a change of maturity in Richo in '04 and something inside me tells me he's ready. I can understand people laughing and scoffing at something that I cant quite explain.
If his head has matured like I think it may have the last 18 months, I think he could be an inspirational leader, and deserves it far more than any player at the club-as a clubman.
My only concern would be his natural football brain, but then again perhaps he's a little under-rated in this regard. I know we seeing him leading to wings and pockets often, but alot of those times could be put down to our gameplan, how the ball came in and how the opposition backmen were too easily able to fill the holes down the middle.
Not to mention Richo being double or triple teamed.
He probably has only 2 seasons left, two seasons which can then be used to guage and choose our next long-term capt.
Richo would be THE PERFECT choice as far as media and marketing goes as well, he also has loyalty and length of service over anyonbe else at the club.
Please dont just laugh this off, I think Richo is the man.
I have since the final siren Rnd 22.

My other suggestion would be... To let the players choose their own Captain in a secret balot voting style.

I agree with you 100%
People will laugh at it, both Richmond supporters and the opposition, but Richo was a much more mature player this year, I think losing the captaincy had a lot to do with it.
I think he'd respect the position 100x more this time around and is certainly the best game breaking, inspirational player that we have. Not too many forwards can take on the captaincy these days, but playing further up the field he could certainly do it.

I think we need a match winner as a captain and both Sugar and Richo fit the profile. I just wonder how Richo would handle the pressure, from all angles, because if he stuffs up, the media would be all over him, more than usual!

He's more used to that than anyone else at the club Calavaray.

I have been pushing the Richo wheelbarrow for a while now, and im telling you know people, do NOT be suprised if he is given the number 17.
He is the only player in the team that can single handedly lift the team.
i dont really care who gets it, but i think Johnson deserves it.
who ever gets the no 17..... i will be wearing their number on my back with the new richmond gurnsey ive ordered. i had the choice of 17, 12, 28, 11, 7 i think they were..... and there might have been others..... but the numbers i liked all had possibilities of being captain! no point having a nuber on my back that may not be worn next season! IMO sugar has it!

Tambo, whilst you may be rapt (and good on you), I think that sucks that they give you a choice of numbers. In my day 7 & 11 maybe, but I wouldn 't have bought unless I got no. 40 (premiership rover) :)
Its only the choice for pre-orders

No, I have a very, very reliable source! And it looks like Joel will just beat Sugar for the captaincy.
