Port’s remarkable turnaround in 2001 continued in round 20 as over 25,000 supporters braved chilly conditions to see them record a commanding 30 point win against former final contenders Geelong. The attendance as a staggering 30% up on 2000, even more impressive considering that Football Park admission prices remain over 60% higher than those at some competing venues that still managed to draw just over 15,000.
The emphatic win was set up with a dominating first half that saw the margin heading towards blow-out proportions. Only when Williams rested Port’s marauding midfield did Geelong get their run on risk-taking game going, closing the gap to a more respectable 5 goals by the end of the match, which in spite of the vocal support, was not one for the time capsule.
Port need to win at least another game to avoid a risky showdown with the revitalised crows who are clearly the comps form team at the moment.
