View Full Version : 2005 State Of Origin Poll
I guess this thread is twofold.
1. Should there be a State of Origin Carnival? Held say every four years, in rotating cities it could involve sides from Metro Victoria and Country Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, NSW and perhaps sides from NT and QLD. It could run for two weeks at the start of a season instead of the Wizard Cup.
2. Who would win? I dont believe it is a fait accompli that the Big V would get up in a carnival format as National U/16 and U/18 carnivals have shown.
Personally id love to see this comp happen. I think serious injuries are just as likely to happen in Wizard Cup games anyway so why not give the public what im sure many would like Eg Judd in a Big V and Simon Black turning out in the Black and Gold, Pavlich in the Croweaters jumper, Riewoldt in a QLD guernsey...hell maybe even some New South Welshman might be keen to seen Mark McVeigh turn out in the light blue..
Im sure this concept has been beaten to death on here but im just curious to hear what you guys think.

I would like to see it happen, used to enjoy watching them, well still do, I have the Tas/Vic game from 1990 on tape. I would realy like to see Tasssie involved again instead of being apart of a team called the 'Allies' Sadly though, this will never be, well in the AFL anyway.
There used to be an absolute sxhitload of quality Tasmanian players getting about in the VFL/AFL....where are they all now?.

Given it away, or have left the state, our footy is in deep trouble, and no one involved in Tassie footy is bothering to save it from going under. I remember not so long ago when the TFL was around league scouts were down here checking players out.
Now days, I doubt they even care about Tassie players, well none Devils and Mariners players. I have seen a lot of decent young players that could make it in the AFL. It's a shame Football Tasmnia won't help out to save our leagues.
I am sure you may find a few talented young Tasmanians left in the leagues, better watch them while you can, in a few years, they will be just a distent memory.
How many Tasmanians are on AFL lists now besides Richo?.

Wouldn't be many, Robertson, Brodie Holland, William Morrison, Jade and Brady Rawlings, Jason Laycock, Justin Sherman, I think there might be more, those are the ones off the top of my head.

Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot about those, anymore that I have forgotten? I knew I may have missed a few.
Enough Tasmanians to be at least competitive in a State of Origin match then...Who would Voss and Aker by playing for incidentlly?...QLD? They would have Riewoldt as well...bit of a dark horse side that.
Would be great to see, surely if it was every four years it could be organized. Good idea...

Should have Victorian AFL teams verses the rest. "Home vs visitors" would be very appropriate.
Would interesting as in recent years the interstate teams have dominated the top 8.
Home Vs Visitors?
No no no...
No more of these nothing teams if State Of Origin is ever resurected. I think it was the Allies concept that played a pretty good hand in killing it off last time. No it should be state teams, with the exception of possibly an Indigenous All Stars side.
Karbasyion you obviously only remember the tail end of the State Of Origin era, not the days when it was run properly and taken seriously by all concerned. Surely there is more need than ever to have it when you have champions from all across Australia playing away from their home states, Judd, Black, Pavlich, Riewoldt...the list just goes on.
If a National Championships is run properly where all the sides get to face off, not some mickey mouse WA V The Allies thing the punters will support it.

The votes say it all, and yes I would like to see the return of State of Origin in competetion of just 3 Teams, Vics, SA, and WA, but scrap the Allies.
Pity the people that voted no, they probably are International Football worshippers, the most rubbish type of sport ever played yet on this planet.

Totally agree that a State of Origin Carnival should be held! ;)
No Allies!
Have a team from every state!
Id have to agree that about International Rules. I have to agree it can be mildly entertaining (after about ten stubbies) but the dog 'incident' from this years series basically summed up how seriously we should be taking this thing.

Definitely. Much preferrable to the IMHO pointless International Rules exercise. Whether during the season or at the end of it, though, I'm not sure.
The carnival needs to happen and if it means we have 2 divisions, then so be it.
Initially the program would have a promotion/relegation system, where the bottom state of Division 1 and the Winner of Division 2 would swap for the next carnival.
Here's how I'd go with it:
Division 1:
Victoria
South Australia
Western Australia
Tasmania
Division 2:
New South Wales/ACT
Queensland/NT
Australian Amateurs
Unfortunately, the reason the Allies was formed is because of the fact that there are not enough AFL-level footballers coming in from the states it represents.
South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia are the only states that can put together teams within the S.O.O. rules. Try that individually with QLD, NSW/ACT, Tasmania & the NT... they will be hard pressed to create a team.
A silly idea perhaps, but seeing as Tasmania fields a team in the VFL... maybe Tasmanians should be wearing the Big V. Then the day that the NT joins the SANFL, Territorians will play in a joint SA/NT team. Its just a thought anyway.

& some here are calling international rules a pointless exercise.
How many here would be prepared to lose a player for a season due to a State of Origin game....eg Riewoldt does his knee representing the Allies.
The use by date past decades ago - let it go.

every competition needs rep games. international rules is not that game. besides, the players seem to be starting to take this concept even less seriously than state of origin.
id love to see it back. the best footballers on the paddock playing OUR game.

I tihnk it's almost a bit racist to even HAVE an abo's only team. Are we trying to speerate them from the rest of us average white Aussies? Are they better than us or something? Or just different because of their skin?
why bother, how about we put the abo players in the states they're born in? Makes more sense for State of Origin.
It isn't SKIN of Origin, or Country of Ancewstor's origin. it's state.

That is the whole problem. Attitudes like this.
I suggest people go and do research into how many players suffered injuries representing their states and come back showing how long they were aout for.
Outside of Tony Hall in 1989, which Hawthorn easily covered the gap of anyway, there wouldn't be too many.

Tarrant isn't. He's just a country bumpkin from mildura (an overrated one at that). He's trying to blame his idiocy and drunkenness on being aboriginal.

Once we get a true national comp with an even spread of teams throughout Australia, where young blokes can play for the teams in their state that they have grown up supporting then we may have SOO every week.
Im hoping the AFL do hold a SOO carnival in 2008 to celebrate the the 150th year of our great Aussie game.
The first official game game of Australian Football played was organised by Thomas Wills and was between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College in 1858 near to where the current MCG is.
No polls on this board. All polls should be conducted in the poll board. ;)

Wearing the big 'V' used to be the benchmark of whether you were a good league player or not. It used to symbolise being the best and having a super team of Locketts, Abletts, Lyons, Buddha Hocking's and Archers etc.
IMO wearing the Australian jumper at the end of year doesn'y mean a pinch of sh**. There are not representing Ausssie Rules and the game.
My highlight growing up was seeing my team's idols Granty and Smithy running around with Glenn Archer, Stevo and the other guys mentioned and playing against a top line S.A outfit.
The game is all about dollars and cents and scheduling and surgery. It's not about personal achievement of which origin is the pinicle.
If the players had respect for themselves and what it meant to represent us vic's or the bloody crow eaters then origin would be back. If the had respect for the history of the game and our icons like knuckles and EJ then they would. And if they had respect for the fans who want to see a pure game of aussie rules fought out between super teams then i'd have my highlight back. But i'm not holding my breath, although nothing would be better than 100,000 vic's in the MCG cheering on the big 'V' against SA.

Fair point. SOO is football quality at its purest. SA would have Pavlich and Tredrea up forward with O'Loughlin on a flank, Ricciuto in the middle .... Vics would have a plethora of quality players to pick from aswell. Makes your mouth water really.
On a different note, I watched a SOO game in the early 90's where Carey dominated for SA and we won, it was fantastic. The SOO rules changed after that, so Carey had to play for the Allies. Strange, as the rules were deemed ok when Dunstall was able to play for the VICS alongside Lockett.
Someone should start a separate thread putting some 'theoretical' SOO teams together.

I like this idea but would have Tasmania in Div2 and no Amatuers
Though the Div 2 teams would struggle to get a side purely from AFL clubs but I don't think it matters it is good for the lesser likes in emerging areas to play along side some of the greats.
have each team play the other 2 teams in their div once with one at home and one away, that should take 3 weeks with the highest aggragate scoring team to play at home against the 2nd highest aggragate scoring team in the 4th week.

No divisions, bring it back as it was, VIC, SA, WA and the Allies. It worked well that way. I'd love to see it come back.

I know this isn't really a state of origin game... but an 'all-star' type game where one team is made up of players from Vic sides, and the other team is from the interstate teams' players.
Its probably hard to get the players passionate about it - but it is a chance to shine on the field where only the best players are invited. And the teams would be loaded with talent.
Quick teams of the top of my head (probably biased :) ):
Non-Vic team:
F Voss Brown Akermanis
HF Hall Tredrea Embley
C Mcleod Cousins Judd
HB Lappin McPharlin Cornes
B Wirrpunda Michael Johnson
R Cox, Black, Ricciuto
Interchange (6): Pavlich, Hasleby, Fletcher, Power, O'loughlin, Wanganeen
Vic-based team:
F Johnson Lloyd Gehrig
HF Tarrant Reiwoldt Hird
C Dal Santo West Crawford
HB Yze Grant Colbert
B Archer Scarlett Fletcher
R Everitt, Harvey, Buckley
Interchange (6): Fevola, Bruce, Ling, Darcy, Ball, Brown
Would be good to watch...

Sadly the only way you will see the Big V go around will be when we thrash the Croweaters on May 21 at Port Melbourne.
