Looking around my local Video Ezy the other day when to my delight I came across the newly released Alvin Purple DVD. Containing both the original ALVIN PURPLE and its sequel ALVIN RIDES AGAIN, this gem is a must for those of us dissilusioned with the drab Aussie film output of recent times. With Gough's accension to power came the type of artistic freedom ( and grants! ) that filmakers like Tim Burstall had been coveting for years and he wasted no time in testing Australia's moralistic waters with AP. In fact with this many double ( and single ) entendres, and more nudity than an entire Peter Greenaway film catalogue one can only wonder what 1974 Australia made of it. As a fan of the genre ( cornball comedy with hiarious sexual innuendo ) it made wonderful viewing. The scenes of early 70's Melbourne were great too.
