IMO If Essendon do not win the flag this year they will struggle in the next few years. They have put a superb team together for the past 3 years but what goes up must come down and you can only spin the "be part of history" stuff for so long. If they do not win the flag this year then they will only get worse in 2002 and how is that being part of history.?
If they do win then they may delay this for a year or two but if they don't expect to be the laughing stock of victoria for a few years because players of this quality cannot be contained for too long.
There is also a depth problem in the team with a big gap between good players in the 2's down to old hacks and players not up to it.

Smokey, you may be right,of course it can`t last forever. If we managed to go back to back I would be more than satisfied, but if we don`t i agree with you,we may fall in the coming seasons. The best thing about this season is how they have coped with injury problems , ie,kept winning (bar four games) and still remained on top.Four or five teams,if they have a little bit of luck can win this years flag.

Interesting idea. St.Kilda failed to win a grand final they should have won and promptly fell apart, underacheiving the next year, sacking their coach and beginning the slide towards the wooden spoon. On the other hand, Essendon got over the disappointment of 99, and the Kangaroos of 98 won the next year, so judging by recent history this is probably not true.
