View Full Version : Is this cheating??
Would any call this cheating?
Back in a junoir grand final i played in, my mate was playing for the other team coming in at no.3. Openers were really good batsmen. We got one out early so my mate came in to bat. He suffered an "injury", so the dismissed batsman came in to run for him. Thats fair enough.
But later that day when it came time for my mate to bowl, he seemed fine and continued to bowl.
Would anyone else do this? Is it just bad ettiquite, or should the umpire have stepped in and said something??

Clearly not - why else bring it up years later on a chat board;)
Surely the runner is to your advantage anyway - more chance of a mess up.

My understanding is it's up to the fielding captain as to whether a runner is allowed or not. I don't think the umpires can do much about it.
Its 50/50 adamvu, how long was the break from when he batted to when he bowled?

Was only a couple of hours.
And by the way, we did lose. Otherwise i wouldnt be bitching here.

Well my mate wasnt the quickest guy on the park. Quite slow actually. And his runner was the opposite.

In junior cricket you do anything you can get away with... I can remember playing a game one week against a side and they had 3 different balls out on the ground... A beautiful near brand new one, one that had one side absolutely plastered with sunscreen and the other side ripped to shreads and the 3rd ball was rough on both sides but had a massive seam...
In junior cricket anything goes..

Mate, that is dodgy.
The league here never got that bad mate.

No, the captain no longer has a right to object, it is up to the umpire.
Generally if someone says they need a runner, they get one - it doesn't have to be for an injury, it can be for illness, sunstroke, cramp or whatever.

Isn't obesity an illness...?

Local and grade cricket people don't really care that much... Junior cricket i doubt anyone would have even noticed.
yeh it's not against the rules to do so. In junior cricket, u can get away with alot of things, but once you step up to grade, it's alot more strict
i remember once i was batting and was playing well, and then it was drinks...after drinks the ball seemed to be swinging like crazy and bouncing alot, after i questioned it, the umpire noticed the ball was about 3 overs old, as opposed to the 20 over ball we were meant to be using...but they let them continue to use it! i went on to make 54 and we won the game, (thanks to my mate who hit 80 off around 50 balls, thanks to the ball being alot harder)but tha'ts not the point!

Junior cricket = massive cheating...
A runner can only be taken with the approval of the fielding Captain. Of course such requests are ( almost ) always granted, so I suppose it's legal, but would go against the spirit of the game.
Considering it's a grand final, if the umpires didn't send off the runner upon request, I'd probably walk off the ground.

Runners are granted with consultation with the umpires ..and are permitted as long as the injury has occured during the match . i once required a runner to conclude an innings when i came down with bad cramp in both legs .. my runner was run out an over later leaving me run out on 93
so theoretically a runner may be required while batting , but you may recover well enough to bowl ...so no it is not cheating
in my case i couldn't take the field let alone bowl

Well it appears I am about to surrender my status of being the poster with the most posts that registered in 2004.
Bentleigh was 4550 (off the top of my head) when I made 5000. What the hell have you been posting for the past eight days?

Its not the fact that he had a runner, im ok with that. Its just that he came on to bowl a few hours later. If he couldnt run while batting i doubt he could have been able to run to bowl.

Thats not that bad, whats shocking is when the batting team provides the umpires. No chance of LBW, Caught behind or run outs, and very dodgy wide and no ball calls, yet havent been able to convince my teammates that, every side is doing it to us, so ******** them and give dodgy calls yourself.
Even in finals, we only got a real umpire at the main end, they still provided Square Leg and had one of our bowlers stopped from bowling for a shocking full toss no ball call that was below the waist and a clear runout given not out by their Square leg umpire.
2 of our younger players are so stupid, they stick the finger up for every appeal.
Runner? Who cares. I should bat with a runner most weeks, but it wouldnt stop me bowling, my runup is a 7 step walk. My calfs ********ed, cant run yet still bowl.
