View Full Version : South Africa V Zimbabwe 1st Test
Anyone else see the scores at lunch??????
Zimbabwe 7/37
What has world cricket come to....
Yeah, I saw that. Not much you can say really. :(
On a brighter note, they have added eight runs without loss since lunch. :D
7/45, Streak and Blignaut at the crease.
Can't see this test going for too long unfortunately.
All out 54 according to cricinfo
*EDIT* Cricinfo also has the score at 9/58, so i dont know what the hell is going on. That site is hopeless sometimes...

All out 54 according to cricinfo
They won the toss and decided to bat too!
Think that backfired just slightly ;)
Then again - we don't know what the pitch is like. Anyone in Pommyland in front of Sky at the moment? They're showing this game apparently on Sky Sport Xtra. Bit hard for me to watch the telly and be at work at the same time ;)

Equal 24th worst batting performance in history.
Worth batting performance by Zimbabwe ever eclipsing...
63 Zimbabwe v West Indies Port of Spain 1999/00
A mighty congratulations to the zimbos on this historic achievement
what a joke
when i saw this series was on i thought "good, the zimbos can have a bit of a crack against a middle of the road test team, get some more exposure, blah blah blah..."
then i see Streak and Blignaut return...hey thats better than sending a couple of younsters to the wolves
then i see this scorecard and my opinion has changed a fair bit.....sure they will never develop if they always play Bangladesh, Kenya or Namibia....but if they are going to turn in rubbish like that.....i mean most of those guys have experience against international opposition except for really Mpofu and Cremer and too see an insipid performance like that where Kallis gets 4-13 is really disappointing
hopefully they come out and bowl and at least be competitive and dont have a 1st innings deficit of 500

LOL, i know how bad that site is, but Cricinfo never seems to work well for me, it is always all over the place.
Zimbabwe were 7/49, 9/58, then all out 54, then 9/50, then 9/58 before finally being all out 54 again.

11 overs into the innings and the Saffas had already equalled Zimbabwe's score.
Now 0/79 after 15 overs and it's time to lift the fielding restrictions. ********, sorry - wrong type of cricket :p Well - they are going at 5.27 runs an over.
Methinks Zimbabwe are going to go back north with their tails between their legs after being heavily spanked.

The good news is that after this series they aren't scheduled to play again until the Kiwis visit in September. Hopefully by then common sense (which isn't that common) will prevail.

I'd be interested to know what's the best run rate for test innings over 200, 300, 400, etc. Currently 5.71 per over. 0/158
wagstaff
4 Mar 2005, 23:42
No real surprise that Zimbabwe folded like that (although without the obligatory fightback from Taibu), looking at the first few overs on the Cricinfo commentary Ntini looked as if he was going to get a wicket every ball.
If South Africa continue on around this Run Rate they would be around 800 by stumps on Day 2.
Even by Zimbabwe's lowly standards, this is shaping as their worst ever Test performance.

Opening partnership has been broken at 217. G Smith gone for 121 off 107 c Masakadza b Cremer. That partnership finished with a RR of 6.23.
As they've lost a wicket, the Saffas have hit the panic button and starting hitting out: the current partnership is 6.92 runs per over :D

5 Mar 2005, 01:16
Yeah, i'm watching it, but can't quite believe what i'm seeing.
They've just called stumps at 340-3
The last session was 33 overs long, and South Africa got 249 runs   (run rate 7.5)
Taibu lost the plot entirely and had no idea how to set his field to stem the flow of runs, it was men against boys and Kallis just made hay.
There's nothing wrong with this pitch, maybe there was some dew around early on, but its not a minefield by any stretch - RSA should declare overnight to make sure ZIM have to bat in the dew in the morning.
Day 1 of this finely poised game:
Zimbaby 54
South Africa 3-340
The lead is 286 with 4 (yeah, right!) days remaining.
All time fastest test 50's:
Kallis - 24 balls v. Zimbaby @ Cape Town 2005
Botham - 26 balls v. India 1981/82
Youhana - 27 balls 2002/03
Kapil Dev - 30 balls

5 Mar 2005, 12:42
It's ironic that the record for fastest test fifty is now held by Jacques Kallis, a player who has probably cost his team a few wins over the years with ultra conservative batting. He has let bowlers dictate to him when they really shouldn't considering his talent.
Still he has had a good day. Great bowling figures & now the fastest fifty.
red+black
5 Mar 2005, 13:35
Let's remember that Kallis only holds the record for fastest 50 where balls faced has been recorded. We just don't know whether Bradman or Sobers or Headley went sick one day and scored a quicker 50.
Sth Africa have declared on their overnight score (3/340) and Zimbabwe are 1/32 in their 2nd inngs
Sanity prevails, what a shame, they could have really rubbed it in

South Africa should of batted until Tea and posted around 5/700 - get some of their batsmen's averages a boost.
If they wrap this up in the post-lunch session, surely this would easily be the shortest Test Match ever?
im still shaking my head at it......
i wonder if Phil Simmons had any idea what he was signing up for when he took the Zimbo coaching job?
wagstaff
5 Mar 2005, 21:24
Poor captaincy from Smith to declare overnight, as another hour or two of destroying the Zimbabwe bowling attack would've totally demoralised them and they would've been in no mood to put up a better fight with the bat today.
As it was, Zimbabwe probably would've got a psychological boost with not having to bowl again after yesterday's massacre and have fought back well so far.
With tough batsmen in Taibu and Streak still to come there's an outside chance that Zimbabwe could make South Africa bat again. If that were to happen, it would be an inditement on Greame Smith's captaincy.

Zimbabwe 3/158 in the 47th Over. A 98 run partnership between Ebrahim and Masakadza was just broken by Boje.
Judging by the commentary, South Africa have slackened off severely and just expected to run through the batting lineup again. If they don't pull their finger out, Zimbabwe could take this match into a third day.

Blignaut has decided it's time to swing the bat!
68.1 Boje to Blignaut, bye: two runs, attempted reverse sweep doesnt
make contact and beats Boucer who was half defending himself
68.2 Boje to Blignaut, SIX, slog sweep on one knee and goes over teh mid

lost ball bounced onto the railway line and we will get a
replcement
68.3 Boje to Blignaut, no run, reverse seep, bottom edge and Kallis
fields at slip

68.5 Boje to Blignaut, FOUR, tries again does get hold of it but it
races away along the groudn to the same spot
68.6 Boje to Blignaut, SIX, has another go and it just clears the rropes

70.3 Boje to Blignaut, SIX, brings up his 50 in 39 balls and 60 mins,
clears the head of Pollock at dep mid wicket
70.2 Boje to Blignaut, one run, down the track and goes all along the
ground to Pollock at deep mid wicket, they go for the second,
somewhat silly, Pollock's throw is on the money and Boje does the
rest allowing Umpire Bowden to signal the wicket extravagantly
