MATHEW Armstrong is going to hate me for saying this -- the Devils
have put together a list capable of winning this year's VFL premiership.
OK, coach, clubs do get talked up pre-season after they've recruited
well and look a million dollars on the training track.
And, yes, we will miss the bash and crash up forward of big Trent
Bartlett, who is giving his panel-beaten body a rest in the hope of
returning in 2006.
But importantly the Devils have had a good taste of what additional
physical and mental demands are required to succeed in finals by finishing
third last season -- one win shy of making the grand final -- and sixth in
2003.
The preliminary final touch-up Sandringham gave us underlined our
weaknesses -- a lack of big-man power, inside toughness on-ball, and a go-to
forward.
But there's a lot to like about the grunt and handling of the
2005-model Devils.
That rival clubs have rejected our bid to buy home games off them is
a good barometer of the increasing respect in which Armstrong's Army is now
held.
Certainly the playing list looks stronger where the game is usually
won and lost -- in the heavy traffic out of the middle -- with Ben Beams,
Ian Callinan, Brett and Matthew Geappen, Ken Hall, Luke Shackleton and so
on.
The acquisition of 197cm Nick Barling from North Ballarat, along
with Nathan Grima and 205cm Markham Johnson should help guard against the
old problem of the Devils getting shorter the longer the game goes.
Up forward the Devils will look for a spread of goals, given they
don't have someone who can regularly kick four of five. So expect to see the
likes of Justin Plapp, Shackleton, Matthew Drury, Barling, Johnson and Brett
Geappen to be rotated up there.
The back half will be more settled, with Matthew Jovanovic, the
human bullet Ben Atkin and Ben Careless again pivotal to its success.
Last but by no means least, having a $1.1 million sponsor such as
Federal Hotels gives the Devils the ability to be more professional both on
and off the field.

The Devils might have gone up a notch, but I think the competition has once again gone up a skill-leve again too. I think the Devils will be competitive, but not the force they have been in recent years.

How has Ben Setchell adapted to his new surroundings? Now his third VFL club (and also played in the SANFL)

i played at the same junior club as nick barling he is not that great so dont get to excited about him, his skills are poor and is always injured. he will look good on the track though.

Same old story I reckon.

Competitive against most sides, get blown away by anyone with reasonable talls. Minus Bartlett and a couple of home games I'd expect them to slip.

The Devils only got as far as they did last year by receiving a disproportionate number of home games, lets be honest.
They will be competitive (after all AFL Tasmania throws money hand-over-fist at them at the expense of local football) and the players will continue to ponce around Hobart like they are god's gift to football (and women).

Setchell is living with one of the Devils (and Clarence) player Matty Geappen (or one of the Geappen's anyway) at Bellerive.

Yeah from North Adelaide & one-time SANFL representative... he's getting around a bit, eh?

I believe Armstrong, and David Stockdale are the only two twits talking up the Devils, I wouldn't worry about what Stockdale says, he obviously doesn't attend games, reading some of the trash he writes.

And Armstrong well....no comment towards him.

It's really only the Southern media that talk up the Devils, up North and up on the Coast no one cares about the Devils - the crowds reflect that.
The Devils would actually be a lot stronger off the field if Armstrong wasn't coach, as a lot of football people, both South and North, loathe the guy.

The reason it gets the crowds it does get, is because the regional comps are that stuffed that people just can't bring themselves to go and watch them anymore, and it's basically a substitute for having no big-time football down South anymore.

Paying $10 to see Brighton get thrashed is better then a Devils game :D ...atleast I don't have to look at that god awful jumper.

Someone pointed something interesting out to me the other day.
A Hobart Lions 9-game home pass for this year is actually more expensive than the Devils home game pass :D

Would never have believed it until I saw it. Well then again............ :o

the people in the North of the state see the Devils as just another Hobart side and their attendances reflect this . I have only been to one devils game at York Park ..and then it was only because they were playing Carlton, so i went to cheer on my team ;)

If the game on Saturday wasn't free I probably wouldn't of gone, I haven't attended a VFL match, probably never will.
