Clarke has had a limited pre-season & is going to miss the match against Melbourne with a groin injury.
Biglands is still out with a groin injury.
Hudson looks a cert to start round 1 as 1st ruck.
Will Meesen start the game against WC on the bench?
He may not be ready physicaly but at least he is fit!

If it was played next week I would say yes, but as it's in two weeks a lot can happen in that time.
Probably be named on the bench though having said that.
Plus it's in NC's plans to play juniors.

If both Clarke & Biglands don't come up Meeson would be a certainty to play. However, I believe the club are just being cautious with the injuries, but the lack of match fitness is a concern. Whoever supports Huddo, I think he'll be reponsible for 2/3rds of the rucking in Round 1.

They'll play Clarke round 1...limited preparation or not. They would be mad or very desparate to play Meeson at all this year!

If Biglands & Clarke don't come up them desperate would be a good description of of ruck situation.

Id' love to see Meesen play, but I'm sure 1 of either (or probably both) Clarke & Biglands WILL be available for round 1.
Meesen will probably be named as an emergency.

They're saying that Clarke WILL be available for Round 1, and as that's 2 weeks away, he probably will be.
Huddo and Clarke look certain to be the opening rucks for Round 1.

I would be surprised if Clarke wasn't right for round 1.

I wouldn't go that far.
I would be surprised if Meesen doesn't play at least a couple of games this year. Regardless of whether we have injuries or not. The kid can play.
Meesen may now get a game as it looks like one of the ruckmen will have to play forward :o
Biglands and Hudson probably more suited to this than Meesen and Clarke.
McDermott said a month ago that he would play in round 1 !!
so by this boards logic that must mean he's being traded without ever playing,

Before the 2004 Draft, I was openly hoping that if we did not pick Monfries, that we pick up Meesen instead of Wood. Today's performance apparently showed a lot.
Biglands, however, will most likely be ready by Round 1. If he is not (and Clarke is not match fit) then I'm all for it. Hudson will do most of the work though.
Once John spends some time in the gym and improves his pace, he will become a very good ruckman. :)

how many times have you seen him play again??

After todays game I've changed my mind and say he should be in the 22.
A ruckman that can read the ball and mark in the forward lines gets my vote.
He had about four or five marks, fluffed a couple of goals but he's presenting himself.
Go you good thing. :)

I'm not sure why you ask that question jack, unless you're having your usual cheap shot at Stiffy.
For what it's worth I think Meesen is an outstanding ruck prospect and I've only seen him play twice. He's a fair way off it at the moment as you'd expect from an 18 year old ruckman who needs to fill out and get more experience, but he's the best young ruck prospect of that age group I've seen for a long time.
He reminds me of a young Shaun Rehn (not in physical appearance, but footy wise) with his ability to read the play and drop back into the right spots.
So I don't think Stiffy has said anything outrageous at all, or anything that the football community in general doesn't think.

i havent seen him play at all, i just think that adelaide fans in general get a little bit too excited when we get a youngster that shows a little talent. Its probably due to the lack of talent coming through in the past 5 yrs.
i'd expect him to be good considering he was taken with 8, but we've had other young rucks that havent come good, considering the promise they had. And dont call him a shaun rehn, you'll jinx him, i remember the last person everyone said was the next shaun rehn.
And its true this comments of stiffy’s, which he is obviously entitled too, while maybe a touch over the top in my view, was pretty much in line with the other ppls general opinions. I was just having a dig. But anyway lets just let him get used to SANFL footy first i reckon, ferg has shown it takes at least 2 yrs for the KKP/Ruck types to develop.

No doubt about that jack. We have squandered some good draft picks over the years, and when we do finally retain a pick and select someone with promise, we probably get more excited than some.
With the advantage of hind-sight I nearly vomit every time I watch the class of Daniel Wells and think what might have been if we hadn't traded that pick away for an injury-ridden once champion unwanted by his club who eked out a chequered season and a half with us.
Consequently I think we all do get excited when we finally see a Meesen and a Van Berlo who will become long term assets to our playing stock, and IMO there is no doubt about that.
C'mon jack. Loosen up and get a little excited along with us. ;)

He looked longingly at the soapbox, admiring macca23's oratory... 'Carey,' he thought, 'Funting Carey!', as Wells drove past in a zoom-zoom Mazda while Sugar eyed the Punt Road captaincy.

4 times.
2 times on tape from the U18 championships including the game where he took Cam Wood to the cleaners and was one of the best players on the field. Saw him against Norwood/North side and I saw him against Sydney last week.
Whats your point????? Or is it like every other time when you don't have one but just like snipe like every other pussy thats all talk but no action

I havent seen him play jack :p so this is from personal experience as an assistant coach at amateur level , oh and 1 year coaching c grade. I think with the football system in place for the AFL clubs ..SANFL etc yes there is an opportunity to slowly develop them in a lower grade. But sometimes I also think you need to throw them in the deep end. I would in the situation we are in play him. No its not the best scenario but I tghink with injuries etc. he is our best option along with VB. Once those better players get over injuries and return , drop them back down to SANFL level. They have had a taste of football at the elite level and will understand better what is required. This is sometimes a better way than watching them dominate an SANFL competition and be surprised about the level required whn picked later in the season.
Summary: Play both as they are the next best till your best is available

i've obviously got under your skin, with a crappy little question like that, i think you just need to relax and not take yourself too seriously, ok?
and i do indeed have a point, and it is that we should not be building him up so much, putting him under pressure, let him actually show something in SANFL level, and then in 1-2 yrs time at AFL level. Comments from the likes of McDermott and Co, that he will be the next captain, just puts him under unnecessary pressure.

i agree that you can throw them in the deep end, esp VB, but its a bit tough on meeson to expect too much from him. For the midfielders like VB, a year in the AFL , as long they dont look lost, wont do any harm. This yr we really need to get 22 games into our 21ish players to see if they can play. I like it at port how you really have to bust your gut in the SANFL to get in the team, we need more of that.

I wish we were in the same boat too jack, but sadly we're not.
Port have real depth, and for a player to get in their AFL team, they have had to earn it with performance plus.
On the other hand we have very little depth if any, and once we have a few injuries we get some pretty undeserving players getting a game.
Taht's a legacy from the poor drafting and trading of days gone by and it's going to take Craig 2 to 3 years to weed the rubbish out.
I have to agree with Stiffy here. I saw Meeso for the first time at Optus on Friday. He was good. Really good for an 18 yo. He covered a lot of ground and presented as a tall target around the ground. Jeff White had him covered in the hit outs but that was to be expected. I would not be surprised to see him play round 1 at all.
I can't see the comparisons to Rehn though. He looks like a 200cm Brett Burton to me, albeit without the spraying of every second kick!
