View Full Version : Devils too good for Demons: Drury injured

In Today's Practice game at North Hobart, the Devils thumped the Demons, who manged to only score 6 goals for the match. The worrying sign for the Demons is that Matthew Drury injured what appears to be his shoulder.
At first it looked like a leg injury as they called for the stretcher, the worst part is, he did it towards the end of the 2nd Quarter, and they only got him into the ambulance towards the end of Half time, and sent him to the hospital atleast half way through the 3rd.
Ben Atkin was quiet for the Devils, Ben Beams popped up for a couple of goals, pretty much looked good, didn't do much either. Luke Shackleton was good in the 1st, went quiet in the 2nd, and played well in the 2nd half, though he only manged to kick one goal, and kicked a couple of points, he was good for the Devils.
Also in the middle 17 (looked a lot like John Platten not sure his name) played well most of the game, he looks a lot like former Hawk Johnny Platten with the hair do, body size, and height.
Plapp was OK aswell, the Devils pretty much controled the game, North Hobart were never in it. But the Devils still need work, as they only looked like they were crusing. It took until the 2nd half for them to break the game open, and bury the Demons.
The crowd although the game was free, was pretty poor, would of been about 600 maybe a few more.
For North Hobart, their season looks like it will get worse, I listened to their coach, and he really didn't have much motivation in his address at half time (I hope never to go into the North rooms again!!) Anyway, even though the Demons played the Devils, they still looked pretty much dead, they didn't look like a team that won the flag in 2003.
I would think the injury ro Drury will be a big blow to the Demons, would probably miss the first 10 rounds (atleast) depending on how bad it was, and it looked bad.
In curtain raiser, the Mariners thumped the Demons aswell, I am not sure if it was the North reserves or colts (I am guessing reserves, because half the side looked too old to be colts) final score saw the Mariners finish with 160 to the Demons 3.1.19. Sad thing is the Demons only scored 1 behind in the 2nd half of the game.
The Mariners looked good, though it would be hard to judge them as they played a local side. I would hope to see the Mariners play well this season, they have a few good players, I wouldn't know their name as there was no program, and no list of names anywhere.
Even though the main game was a hiding, it was a good game, the Devils played well, the Demons have a lot of work ahead of them before Round 1 of the AFLST Premier League season.

I was reporting what I saw, I wouldn't think ANY AFLST team would of won, or NTFL team, but, I was going on what I heard last week about the Demons losing to Launceston by a huge margin.
The comments that have been made, was the body language, before, and after the game, they played sloppy, they turned the ball over, their coach decided that it was better to play the man then the ball in the 2nd half.
I still believe it will be a long season for North, as it will be for Glenorchy, judging by the outs they have had. The Demons season will be no better then last year's, even if they played a local side in this match, they probably would of looked the same.
Even the North supporters made the comment they are going to have a long season, so I am not alone in my judgement of the club.

Yeah expected result that one. Huge crowd - 600 :D
Just looking at the SFL this season, the Premier League so far looks to have North Hobart, Hobart, Glenorchy and maybe Brighton as strugglers.
Another great standard year by the looks of things.
New Norfolk - Clarence Grand Final again, I take it.

North Hobart were lucky not to have been done by more, the Devils were playing at half pace most of the game. The Devils would miss the ball and still have been able to get away.
Beams played badly, but still ended up with 5 goals, imagine that? If the Devils have of kicked straight, or even played at full pace, they would of easily won by well over 200 points today.

The majority of North Hobart's senior score was in the 2nd half, their reserves didn't score in the 2nd half, well no goals just a point. And didn't look like it.

That #17 sounds like former Port Melbourne and Werribee player Ben Setchell, who joined the Devils this year.

I believe you might be correct, I hadn't seen him play before, so that would most probably be him. Played quite a good game in the middle.

.......And now the latest practice match for the Devils.
Coming up against reigning premiers of the NTFL of the past 3 years, Burnie Dockers the Devils handed out a humiliating 212-point flogging on the North West Coast yesterday.
Devils coach Matthew Armstrong whingeing again that his side aren't able to have practice matches against better opposition.
TFC Devils 36.18.234 - Burnie Dockers 3.4.22
Well Armstrong, maybe if the Devils didn't su*k the life-blood out of regional football in every way possible, then maybe your team might have better local opposition.
Expect things to get worse while the current AFL Tasmania midset is still going.

I was wondering the same thing at North Hobart last week, I mean playing a local side isn't going to tell them much about how the side is travelling. It would be best to play a side that is at their level.

The standard of local football is so weak now that no club would challenge the Devils.
I thought that Burnie would get within 50-points of an injury depleted Devils lineup, but they copped it in the coight by 212.
I'm not sure why they don't have teams made up of fringe Devils, plus talented players from other teams around the state, instead of the currently rediculously p*ss weak regional sides.
The training alone of the Devils would kill most of the local hacks.
Kind of like Devils v Rest Of The State.

My dad had that idea that a state side made up of the better local players should play them. Would of made more sense, I am not sure if they would get close to the Devils, but it would of been better to watch then that.

Devils call for VFL practice matches
By David Stockdale.
DEVILS coach Mathew Armstrong yesterday called for more funding to enable the Devils to play pre-season games against VFL clubs.
Armstrong's plea came after the injury-riddled Devils thrashed Burnie -- winner of the past four NTFL premierships -- by 212 points at York Park, 36.18 (234) to 3.4 (22). It followed last week's 151-point practice match romp against North Hobart.
"I thank Burnie for playing us but we need to play some practice matches against other VFL sides if we want to hit the ground running at the start of the season,'' Armstrong said.
He dismissed speculation of former Western Bulldogs key defender Matthew Croft, 32, coming out of retirement to play with the Devils rather than just be their away-game runner.
"It's very unlikely Croft will do anything other than run for us,'' he said. "Nor will Trent Bartlett be making a comeback. We've got enough sore bodies as it is.''
Talk Croft might play was fuelled by his presence at York Park but this was later explained as Croft wanting to familiarise himself with the players.
Adding to Armstrong's woes going into the first-round away match against St Kilda-aligned Springvale on Sunday week are injuries to utility players Kane Richter (leg stress fracture) and Nick Paine (medial ligament strain).
They join Matthew Drury, who is out for the season with a badly dislocated shoulder, Ben Setchell (strained back), Ben Atkin (torn calf), Brennan Savage (hamstring), and Kurt Heazlewood and Ben Careless (strained backs).
Despite being given back Devils pair Luke Shackleton and Brett Robinson, Burnie didn't give a yelp.
The match was dead in the water by half-time after the Devils piled on 11.4 to 1.1 in the second quarter.
Justin Plapp and captain Ben Beams led the goal splurge with five and four respectively.

That would be the most logical thing for them to do.
