unfortunately the boys couldnt come up with the goods yesterday, going down by two goals in a very entertaining match were both teams gave it their all
although going down in the first final i believe that staying with a stand alone vfl side was the correct decision by the club
the boys learnt a lot as did the coaches

you only had to look at the two teams coming off the ground and carlton were just physically strong and more experienced, that being said there was plenty to take out of the season

least of which is the form of ken hall, luke hawkins, ben goddard, josh mahoney and our 6 draft picks

hall, hawkins, goddard and mahoney should all consider themselves chances to be picked up in the draft, either national or rookie

ken hall played most of the season off half back and beat some very fine players, he has great skills, especially under pressure, he seems to be better when there is physical contact, also has an awesome left foot kick - rookie list chance

luke hawkins is a full forward with very good hands and a great kick, an explosive lead and plays very smart, too old for the rookie list but maybe a draft chance, hope he gets a go, if not at essendon then somewhere else

ben goddard, for those who have seen him will probably have struggled, this guy is tiny, but has a huge heart and a great deal of courage, beat ang christou yesterday, can play forward, back or in the midfield, awesome hands and a great set shot, bit of blake caracella about him - rookie list chance

josh mahoney from the dogs and pies had a good season, many though he was BOG for victoria but missed a fair bit of footy towards the end due to a broken jaw, another that can play in a number of positions and has good skills, hope he gets a spot on the senior list

so there are four reason why the side has been a success,

james davies our first draft pick had a up and down season, showed glimpses of brilliance and there is definately something there

ted richards played most of the year as a key forward or back and should hold his head high, there was a lot asked of him and performed, a lot to learn but im sure he will produce the goods

jordan bannister played some senior footy, got carried off on a stretcher early yesterday before coming back in the second quarter, this only highlights his courage, he is a great mark for his size and is probably like justin blumfield, can play tall or small

marc bullen also played senior footy and the club must be proud of this guy, drafter late he looks awesome, maybe the next brett ratten, loves it hard and wont back down, looking forward to seeing him develop

sam hunt is still very raw and didnt show a great deal, does have very good skills once he gets the ball, interested to see what happens here

michael davis was our last pick and got better as the year went on, looked as if it took him a while to settle down but does look ok, as a rover he gets a lot of the ball but sometimes his disposal lets him down, im sure this will be worked on over summer

hille, forster knight, mcgrath, peverill, bolton etc are all names we know and all look like they will take a huge part of the 2002 season

highlight of the year was our win against top 4 side springvale
we had a heap of players out due to injury, i think we had something like 12 top up players, 3 rookies, 5 of last years draft picks and only two that you would consider senior players
we won that game in great style and it really set our season

so well done to all the boys, hopfully the club as a whole can build on what the vfl boys achieved and the future for the afl boys definately looks a bright one
