On SEN last Friday during a rain break in the NZ v Aust Test match, Francis Leach was joined by a bloke (can't remember his name) who recounted some of the TV shows Ch. 9 used to bring in whenever the cricket was interuppted by rain.

Some of the ones he brought up included, 'Wings' (incredibly average 1990s US sitcom), 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air' and 'Benson' (going back to the early 1980s).

One caller then rang up and mentioned how in the mid-1980s, Ch. 9 would screen a music video clip of then flavour-of-the-month Greg Matthews in full flight, with a Hoodoo Gurus song in the background. As the caller said, worth remembering for Richie Benaud having to introduce it!

And of course, there were the shows Ch. 9 used to show during the lunch break before they created the 'Cricket Show', most of which were tripe, including:

- 10 pin bowling

- 18-foot skiff racing (dreadfully boring)

- Going further back, Chuck Connors hosting a show called 'Thrillseekers', a sort of prototype to the extreme sports we see today

- A show called 'Animals, Animals, Animals' which was about, err, animals

What are some of the shows you can remember they during rain/lunch breaks?

Considering the nonsense that Benaud and others, excluding Michael Holding and Waqar Younis as far as I have noticed, have to spout these days, introducing Greg Matthews is relatively tame I suppose.

"There's a really great episode of Psychic Detectives on tonight. The Benaud family never miss it and we always tape it and watch it again the next day. Love those foxy chicks. It is wicked and awesome, pop pickers"

When I hear Michael Holding promoting a limited edition of Michael Clarke's hair gel, extracted from source, I'll know things have really gone to the dogs.
"You can rub it between your fingers and apply it to any part of the body."

During a break in play due to rain, I swear I remember a show called "World's Wackiest Inventions" hosted by John Blackman and Jackie McDonald.

Now, there's Logie award winning TV!

There was a time when "The Odd Couple" was compulsory during lunch and weather breaks ...
But the "Rifleman" in "Thrillseekers" was the best. (Or the worst, depending upon your view).

Can anyone recall Paul Hogan's P1sstake of Chuck Connors on Thrillseekers during this time ?

In England when it rained & the cricket was still on BBC, they nearly always showed Ian Botham smashing Lillee & co about at Headingly in 81 & Bob Willis running through the batting.

I don't think it went unnoticed amongst the various Aussie touring sides. :D

They replayed a Aus vs West Indies game from the mid 90's when the rain hit the Gabba. That was the match Bevan hit a four to win it.
