2) Comment

A shocking newsletter this week with half the reporters not
bothering to file their reports on time, if they even bothered to
write them at all.

By the way, all of our Commonwealth Bank subscribers can burn in
hell.

After having accounts with the CBA since I was about 10 years old
(savings, loans, credit cards), they have decided to cancel my
credit card due to non-payment of some piddling amount. No
attempt to contact me (though they claim they have been trying to
call for several months but "no one was ever home") until AFTER
the card had been cancelled and they were afraid that I would not
pay up.

So all of a sudden, within days of the cancellation some call-
centre halfwit 'luckily' managed to call while someone was at
home and track me down in London. Despite the fact that there is
someone home 90% of the time. The amount of bull***** they try to
get you to swallow is amazing.

Until next time,

Essendon v. Richmond
Friday, August 31, 2001
MCG 7:40 PM

I don't know about you lot, but I reckon there's something smelly
about this game. Matthew Richardson kicking straight? Wayne
Campbell getting a hard ball? Danny Jacobs missing from ten
metres out? Ben Holland playing well? Jonathan Robran getting a
game? Nah, this one's as crooked as Rod Carter's head.

The football world is already massively over-populated with smug
Essendon fans, arrogant Carlton supporters and totally irrational
Collingwood types. The last thing we need is an influx of loud,
boorish, obnoxious Richmond barrackers, which is the likely
outcome after the Tigers "victory" over Essendon at the MCG on
Friday night.

This is the type of game that bandwagons are built on. An
against-the-odds "win" against a seemingly superior "opponent".
You watch - there'll be more Tiger fans than you can poke a rusty
nail at (or with) by Monday morning, gloating about Brad Ottens
dominance and screaming "yellow and black" down the corridors at
inappropriate moments.

Richmond defeated Essendon by 24 points at the MCG on Friday
night. Richmond needed to win to ensure that they had a double
chance in the finals. Essendon were already assured of top spot,
and the only uncertainty in the Bomber mindset was who their
opponent in the first week of the real stuff would be. Beating
the Tigers would have opened the door for Carlton (or perhaps
Hawthorn) to fill fourth spot, while a loss meant that Richmond
would be the foe for two weeks running.

So what of the Bombers? Were they at full pace? It's a big
call, but the Dons didn't seem to be entirely at full gallop at
stages during this game. Apart from Robran and Jacobs, they were
also carrying blokes called Mark Bolton and John Barnes in this
side. They seemed to have a couple more gears that they were
reluctant to engage. Could the Bombers have been purposefully
avoiding the Blues during the first week of the finals?

Lest they are forgotten, it should be pointed out that Richmond
played well. Matthew Richardson actually remembered which gap he
was supposed to be aiming for, and the Tigers controlled the
middle of the ground for much of the night. If not for the
individual brilliance of Matthew Lloyd, Dean Rioli and the
returning Michael Long, the Bombers may have lost by a fair bit
more than four goals.

For the Tigers' part, their reward for this victory is to play
Essendon again. While they (and their hordes of new fans) will
go into next week's Qualifying Final full of confidence, the rest
of the football world will be sitting back and expecting the
"real" Essendon to put in an appearance.

But for one week at least, the Tiger *ahem* faithful will have
braggin rights in ol' Melbourne town.

Carlton v. Geelong
Saturday, September 01, 2001
Optus Oval 2:10 PM

Final scores -

Carlton 13.19 97 vs Geelong 3.9 27

Carlton ran home winners by 2 points on Saturday.. and that was
just the first quarter. It seemed that Geelong weren't even out
there for the other three quarters.

Apart from three rough play incidents by the cats, in the last
three quarters, they did nothing.

You would think that they would try harder for their retired
champion on-baller Gary Hocking. Unfortunately even he was quiet
in his limited time on the ground.

While for Carlton they could do no wrong, even when they got 9
straight behinds they still didn't look in trouble of losing the
game.

Koutoufides ran wild all day fetching over 25 possies and also
getting two goals. Other good players were Fevola, Whitnall,
Hulme and the old man Craig Bradley.

On one hand there was an area that Geelong did actully win in and
that was knock outs... 4 to 0.

Shoot those cats.

Hawthorn v. St Kilda
Saturday, September 01, 2001
MCG 7:00 PM

After tonight's match it's hard to know what team is harder to
follow - the Saints or the Hawks. At least with the Saints you
know the chances of winning are slim most weeks, and to pull off
a win such as last night's was a bonus for long suffering fans.
As opposed to Hawks fans, who know their team should win, their
team plays well enough to win, but is unable to get the 4 points
time after time.

For Hawks supporters, it was another night of misery in what has
been a terrible 3 months. Once again a lack of leadership when
required cost them dearly, and another embarrassing loss appeared
to condemn them to a final in Adelaide, until the Dockers pulled
off an unlikely victory to give the Hawks a final against the
Swans next week.

At quarter time the Hawks appeared to be heading towards a
regulation victory over the Saints. The ball was been pumped
into the forward line at will, and John Barker was having a field
day. When the Saints did get the ball they found almost
impossible to get past half-forward, with Mark Graham giving
Aaron Hamill a thrashing.

But the Hawks lacked the killer instinct needed to put away a
clearly inferior opposition, and they never quite looked home,
even with a 23 point lead at the 20 minute mark.

In a scrappy defensive contest (there was a 30 minute period
without a goal kicked) Matthew Capuano played the game of his
life. With Peter Everitt a late withdrawal Capuano did a
fantastic job against Rehn, O'Farrell and Thompson - taking 13
marks and dominating the hitouts. Brett Moyle was fantastic
around the packs with 32 possessions and Justin Peckett was
superb off half back, picking up kicks at will.

Barry Hall and John Hay had a good battle but in the end you had
to give the points to Hall. Youngster Milne proved too much for
an out-of-sorts Luke McCabe to handle, but Joel Smith did a much
better job in the 2nd half.

Indeed, Milne had only managed one kick for the 2nd half until a
controversial free kick was paid right in front of goal. The
goal was kicked, and from out of nowhere the Saints were within 5
points with 90 seconds to play. The ball was rushed forward
again where Milne swooped on it, only to see his shot from the
boundary hit the post.

However, Joel Smith's kickout fell short of its target, Milne
grabbed it and passed to the unmarked Barry Hall only 20 metres
out. The siren went, and Hall wobbled the goal through to give
Grant Thomas his first win as coach in sensational circumstances.

It was a shattering result for Hawthorn, who had controlled the
game for 3 and a half quarters, and were playing for a home
final. As luck would have it they have finished 6th anyway, but
it's hard to see a side that has lost 9 out its past 14 matches
progressing far. The only positives for the Hawks was the form
of rookies Steven Greene and Nathan Lonie. Greene in particular
with 33 possessions looks like a star of the future. Nick
Holland kicked 4 goals for Box Hill to indicate a likely return
next week, along with Shane Crawford, and possibly Daniel
Harford.

But with so many players down on form and confidence, the Hawks
appear to be heading for an early exit from September.

Hawthorn 7.3 10.3 11.7 13.9 87
St Kilda 3.1 7.4 9.7 13.11 89

Brisbane v. Sydney
Saturday, September 01, 2001
Gabba 7:40 PM

Well what can you say? Brisbane for the flag? Well after their
last 13 performances now, you would be starting to think so
that's for sure. It what started out as a really tough arm
wrestle, the Lions shone through yet again and led the way with
their mid field.

Final scores:

Bris. Lions 13.15 93
Sydney 9.8 62

Brisbane lead at every change and just quietly kept extending
their lead, till it was out of the grasp of Sydney. But the
reason the win was extra special was because sunny Queensland had
their years supply of rain in the one night. The centre square
looked like a pond and the supporters were swimming. It really
showed the skills of both sides midfield. Occasionally player
like Akermanis were a little to fancy causing some ugly play, but
both sides showed great determination in the conditions. In the
end it was quite a good score in what should have been a really
low scoring game.

Kevin Sheedy came out yesterday and gave Brisbane a huge wrap. He
told the media that Essendon should not be the premiership
favorites, but rather Brisbane, because they are playing a lot
more consistently. And if you have seen the side play in this
record breaking winning streak you know why. The lions are so
dangerous when they are on the run and just destroy their
opposition. The contest was predicted to be really close with
both sides vying for the best spot possible on the ladder and
with both sides going into the finals series.

The next few weeks will show whether Brisbane can keep their form
running, with a couple of home games which is really great for
the club. The home crowd last night was very respectful and
stayed right to the end to watch their side continue on in their
winning ways, despite being wet through to the bone.

Congratulations Brisbane and Sydney on making the finals again
this year. Look forward to the next few weeks.

Port Adelaide v. West Coast
Sunday, September 02, 2001
Football Park 1:40 PM - 2:10 PM AEST

This was little more than a training run for Port Adelaide with
the one downside being the loss of Stephen Paxman to a knee
injury. The Power dominated out of the midfield and the Eagles
either didn't have the desire or ability to match them. At some
times it looked like the Eagles players didn't want the ball and
we had the farcical situation of players handpassing to a team
mate who would hit the ball back volleyball style rather than
grab the ball and handpass it to a player running towards goal.
It's no wonder Ken Judge is getting frustrated. The Eagles have
some good young talent but they need some more wise heads in the
team while they learn the ropes. A very disappointing day for
Chambers, Green, Humm, Wilson, McIntosh, Jackovich, Harding and
Haynes whilst the performance of Cousins wouldn't do his Brownlow
chances any harm.

For the Power Tredrea looms as a big threat to all the teams in
the finals and the midfield rotations are second to none. Despite
losing in the ruck to Gardiner and Cox the Power midfielders were
on top and providing plenty of opportunities to their forwards.
Young Murray may have earned himself a spot in the finals on
today's performance and all the Port forwards would be very
grateful as his passes streaming out of the centre were on their
chest lace out. Although the loss of Paxman is a big concern the
Power still have Wakelin, Bishop and Mead as their tall backmen
and I think their pace will be the decider in the finals. Down
forward the wild cards for the Power were Cockatoo-collins and
Wanganeen.

Port Adel. 5.7 11.12 18.17 24.19 163
W. Coast 0.3 2.6 3.7 7.9 51

Goals
Port Adelaide
W.Tredrea 5, C.Cockatoo-Collins 3, S.Dew 3, G.Wanganeen 3,
C.Cornes 2, B.Guerra 2, N.Stevens 2, J.Francou , B.French ,
R.James , S.Paxman

Goals West Coast
R.Jones 2, Ph.Matera 2, B.Cousins , A.Embley , D.Haynes

Next week it will be Primus and French vs McDonald and Keating in
the ruck and Voss, Black, Hart, Akermanis, Lappin, McCrae versus
Dew, Burgoyne Schofield, Stevens, Francou and Carr in the
midfield rotations. This should be a great game and let's hope
the conditions are dry as this looms as a very exciting match up
of two talent laden teams.

4) Out of Bounds
Commentary from Phil Doyle
http://www.afltips.com/people/phildoyle.html

(Better late than never huh?)

OUT OF BOUNDS #21 - Fear Of A Red And Black Planet

Many people have approached me asking whether this is the most
boring season since 1924.

That season, long considered the nadir of League Football, bears
striking similarities to our current festivities.

An all conquering Essendon outfit, corruption at the highest
levels of the game, questions whether the Footscray club is fit
for league football, pestilence, misery, and showers clearing
with freshening south, souwesterly winds and a late cooler change
expected for Tuesday.

Let us, in a break from the traditions of the Australian sports
media, consider the facts from season 1924: The Bombers were
going for successive flags; an alarming drop in attendances
ensued during the bizarre finals system in place; and there was a
Richmond side that promised a great deal, but ultimately
disappointed their supporters.

The word eerie springs to mind.

After the penultimate round it's interesting to examine the form
of those sides remaining in contention leading into the second
half of the season.

The anti-climax that is round 22, which is specifically designed
by the AFL to give all clubs a rest with a minimum of travel,
sets the tone for this inelegant spectacle.

Bucking this trend is North Melbourne, who have decided to let
one lucky supporter (and there must be at least one, surely!)
host this years clash against most-improved 2001 trophy winner,
Collingwood. Consider this match a sort of dry-run for both teams
respective end of season trips.

So, god knows where it's going to be held. At this stage we can
only rely on rumour and speculation, aka the AFL Communications
Department.

But as for the teams that matter, well South's shack up with the
Fitzroy Bears at Brunswick Street North on Saturday night appears
to be a highlight. Just as in '24 these two teams have belied
expectations and are really amongst the action. Stafford and
Ahmat had a run around at Port Melbourne last weekend as a bit of
a clip-over-the-ear from Rodney Eade. Stafford looked pretty
flat, if a class above his fellows, with Port folding at the
death to extinguish their hopes of making the VFA finals.

Now the Borough suffer the indignity of the VFA semis and prelims
being played at their home ground. It'd be enough to make you
want to piss in the tea urn.

But back to Brunswick Street North. The Swans will face an
elimination semi the following week, and it won't be in Sydney,
nor even Lakeside. The Bears are arguably the form team of the
competition, and this hit out should give some kind of semi-final
level footy.

The Friday night clash between Coburg-Richmond and the Same Olds
may echo 1924, where Richmond beat Essendon, but still lost the
flag. But more than likely the Tigers will have a fit of the
Bourke's and evaporate, slipping into a well deserved fifth place
and allowing Bloody Carlton to move into the top four.

That's about as far as the Blues will get. They'll meet the Same
Olds in the second chance semi, and they may well beat them.
Their form against Sheedy's Privateers is better than anyone
else's this year, but beating Essendon is like poking at a
beehive with a stick. The three sides above Carlton will be the
real contenders, along with the Woodville Crows.

The Pride Of South Australia has had a bizarre year and from the
outside it doesn't look like a happy ship. Nonetheless a
barnstorming finish from the bottom half of the final eight
should provide some humour during the semis.

Hawthorn will do well in the making up the numbers category.

This years Stones Green Ginger Wine 2001 Premiership decider will
be being called live from football's home away from home,
Newcastle, as part of the fourth annual National Young Writers
Festival. Apart from the original half-back flanker, yours truly,
the panel of experts will be bringing this years premiership
battle to new and as yet unforeseen levels.

The boy from Broome, Shane Jesse Christmass (who is believed to
be responsible for several damaging leaks in the media concerning
the Melbourne Football Club this year) will be joined by the
sultry Alicia Sometimes and the Pink Magpie, Richard Watts,
convenor of the Collingwood Gay And Lesbian Supporters Group.
Raffle prizes include: A Melbourne Football jumper found in a bin
outside the MCG after round 8; A bottle of White Crow, the
official AFL Premiership tomato sauce, A tribute to EJ Whitten on
multi-media CD; as well as many other prizes and divers and
interesting entertainments too numerous to mention. And they'd
want to be, after all, this is the most boring season sine 1924.
