I'd like to say i do!! But...i don't. Saturday night wasn't too bad after Seymour got inspired by the local kickboxing tournament, with the pub turning into kickbox city after it closed!! Everyone was inspired and became kick boxing champs. Classic.
It's fair to say Shane Schottner does his best work after midnight.

Nice one. :thumbsu:
It's pretty interesting hearing all the rumours flying around at the moment. Would anyone like to name a few of the young guns in the GV (up to 21 years of age)?
For Rochester, I think two young players: Matt Letcher and Brodie Montague would represent a pretty good future.
Letcher began the year in the 3rds and kicked about 40 goals in the first 8 rounds before playing seniors for the rest of the year. He is a medium forward with good skills. Kicked 4 on debut.
Montague is a goal kicking midfielder. He forced his way into the ones pretty early on and never looked back. He is very confident and has excellent skills. He kicked four goals from a wing (including one where he took a few bounces and kicked it on his left from 50m) in that infamous shoot-out against Euroa.
There are quite a few good other ones, but these two stand out for me.
To be honest, I can't think of too many around the league, but feel free to 'out' them on here...

he he, red headed freak! Eetchy is 18, not sure what the future hold for him, doesn't seem like he knows what he wants to do yet. So therefore could easilly still see matty being around fo a few more years to come. :thumbsu:

Yeah nar fair call ECHUCABOY, come on leaps and bound this year. Possibly one of those players who plays better when the standard is better if you know what I mean. Not the sought of player that would dominate a 3rds game, but seemed to handle the rise to senior football with ease.

If that montague was still under 18's this year, there is a massive future ahead of him. Against Seymour at Seymour he played a pretty awesome game, obviously we knew he was young. But i reckon he had about 30 touches all around the ground. And was a big part of their 3rd quarter comeback.
Robbie douglas - 20. He is a star.
Jake Anderson - 18, didn't get a spot with Bushies initially, but fought his way into the side, played most of the season there. Missed out on a gig in the GV granny simply because Matt Penn and Pilling returned.

Used to spend some time drinking with the big fella in my younger days and second that motion FBP. Pete and Blurter White, Brett Lewis, Schotty and a school mate of his (Throb) came up and crashed when I was living up north. yeah all these raps on brodie montague are fair enough - he could be anything. to all the other guys on here that aren't from rochy you will just have to trust that we aren't being biast here. it is incredible to think that a player can have such a ready-made senior body along with the skills he possesses and still be eligible for under 16's this year. going on what I have seen he won't be playing too many games at rochy over the next couple of years.

Daniel Sage does love it a Euroa, but he is moving back to Melbourne and has got some thinking to do ,Monty are [ have] going to have a crack . And that come straight from the horses mouth. Ithink a few people must be getting told down in melbourne a diffrent story to the one being told to Euroa people. Hey i hope he stays a real pleasure to watch.

ha ha. one of the great terry warren's favourite movies that one. I must say that it is one of my fav flicks also. herbie would have to be the best character I'd say and plays his part well. maybe a touch better than smokey and the red rocket did in their short film.
in other news that has just come to hand, another short film has recently entered the shelves at video ezy. it stars wizz and j main way back on new years eve 01/02. most of the footage was shot at the mecure hotel in geelong. michael tuck and daniel bandy definitely played major roles in the film, not sure whether brett heady did though - can ya help me out here wizz??
Here is some news hot off the press guys. See how this pans out. Tatura are chasing some Bullants players as well as all the rest. Rumour has it they are just about to sign Laurence Furlan and Paul Scanlon. Scanlon (or Chewy) is a very good player (onballer) and will be one of the best onballers in GVFL if he commits to Tat. Furlan on the other hand believes he is better than he really is. He is a s h i t bloke too. He done a Wayne Carey at the Bullants with a mates girlfriend which split the club. If I was Tatura I would stay well away from him.
Not sure what Furlan is like as a bloke coz I've never spoken to him, but I used to play against him and think he would be a great pick up for Tatura if they could get him. Agreed, Scanlon would be as good, if not better, than the likes of haberman, Penn, Sage, but Furlan isn't that far behind them. He's certainly a better bet than what McBrien was for Euroa...besides, most blokes down at Tat are single..

Massive call suggesting Scanlon would be better than Sage, Sage would be by far one of the best if not the best onballer i have ever seen play outside of the AFL. The guy would smash them at VFL level as well, i think Sage would get touches of the pill in any league in Australia, the guy is a jet.

Mate, played against all those blokes. Have you seen Scanlon play? I think you'll find for a majority of the time they were at Bullants, Penn and Scanlon were both picked before Sage. Obviously Sage had a huge year and can play, but your suggestion that he would "smash" them at VFL level is a bit extravagent - he was never first rover at bullants (in a poor side) and of the games he did play at that level, I doubt he ever would have gotten 1 best on. I admit the guy can play, but think you've gone a touch overboard in your assessment..

Sage has no right foot to speak of. Couldn't see him being able to turn onto his left every time in the VFL like he does in the GV.
Gets heaps of it, but it helps when they look for him, in the VFL he would be a dime-a-dozen, and wouldn't stand out like he does in country footy, all the players are as good as him and they don't always look for him like they do at euroa.

Forgot about Jesse sorry. GV is almost as fast a footy as VFL and if he's got suspect hammy's at 18 he'll be relying on ability alone. Beautiful left footer with good skills but trust me there are very very capable defenders in the GV

Also played against Scanlon and Sage when they were at the Bullants, both players get a high amount of possesions and have nice skills.
I havent seen Scanlon play in recent times but Sage i think is an out and out star in the GV and would go to back to the VFL a better player should he want to than a few years back.
If Scanlon wants to head to Tatura thats great, and if his on par with Sage then brilliant. In the GV Sage has the runs on the board and i think thats what counts however to be honest i couldnt give a stuff as long as Scanlon gets the pill.
Whats the source for the Scanlon to Tat rumour??
Whats the source for the Scanlon to Tat rumour??
GV footy fan was the first to post the rumour, not sure what his source is. Most of the information I get is actually from a mate in Tat, so I'm a bit surprised I haven't heard anything...though I'm sure that it's true coz they've rung almost every bloke and his dog. They were real keen on Frankie Raso, but he wouldn't budge, staying where he is. I guess they would have gotten Scanlon's number off him when they spoke to him, but how successful they've been, or if he is indeed a chance to sign, I don't know.
And I'm happy for us to agree to disagree, but in my opinion if Sage went back to the bullants he'd be a fringe player at best and possibly not even get a senior game. A few blokes on this board seriously under-estimate how good VFL is..

Doona that is a silly statement! Not even close at all to VFL. I get the feeling your assessment may be on the back of seeing a few high class GV finals games, but I can guarantee VFL finals goes up a few cogs also. Think of the standard throughout the regular season and then compare the two. The VFL standard throughout the season is pretty consistent no matter who is playing, yet the GV gets some absolute rubish which isn't worth attending.

McBrien has hardly played any games in the last 2 years. I think he has played total of 13 games in 2 years due to hamsting tearing 6 times, broken hand and quad tearing 3 times. So any player in the league is a better bet than him with those sort of injuries. What I know of the 2 blokes is that Furlan is shocking bloke in that he did a Wayne Carey and is known to steal things off team mates while McBrien does put most of his pay cheque back over the bar and is always willing to help out. Furlan is a better player though. It is rumoured though McBrien is heading back to melbourne to play footy after he gets back from overseas next year.
A few blokes on this board seriously under-estimate how good VFL is..
Dude i doubt anyone underestimates the VFL, its common knowledge that outside the AFL the standard of footy is the best in Australia.
But if you where to ask a neutral observor like Footyman who has seen a bit of both im sure that he would say from a spectators POV the GV is alot more attractive to watch.
The VFL is very crash and bash and with not alot of open space for free flowing footy. No doubt the VFL is a higher standard but dont expect VFL players tp be dominant in the GV.

I agree Junkie think there is a fair bit of difference between the VFL and the GV. VFL has a lot more depth than the GV and it is fair to say better players as well.

Tige is right with the last comment, there is not as much space for free flowing footy in the VFL. There are a lot of blokes in the VFL ressies that are a bit poor with their skills. Both are different types of footy, the GV has more 25 yr old + players than the VFL which is now more of a young mans game.
The GV is exciting footy to watch and the standard is pretty high. Some blokes from the VFL will be suited to it, but a lot of second rate VFL players who spent much of their time in the reserves I wouldn't expect to be GVFL senior stars.

I have to disagree with you tige. Have a look at the grannie. Approx. 20 players that are from the VFL and some of those only played VFL ressies. Sage, Howse, Penn, Haberman, Pilling, M. Clayton, Saad, Grainger were all pretty dominant in GVFL right through the year. I have no doubt that if these players were not in GV it would not have been Euroa v Seymour final. Also if VFL players were not going to dominate then why are so many clubs chasing them. I agree that the bigger grounds of country footy gives them more space to operate in and they always use the ball very well when they get it.
Have a mate who plays VFL (North Ballarat) and know a bit about his club, but Im not privvy to the difference in pay from VFL to GVFL. Could anyone shed some light as to whether GVFL clubs match or better VFL clubs in regards to match payments.

yeah I have seen both of them also. movie directors such as smokey rathjen are believed to have been impressed by sizo's talents in that short film and apparently offers were made to advance his acting further as a result. unfortunately though big sizo decided not to take the opportunity of making the most of his talents.
the travy hann one wasn't quite as good was it wizz?? the other major character was a bit of a space cadet wasn't she??
Mate while im yet to play GV and my last competetive football was in the VFL i would still say by just looking at both games of footy that the GV is far more exciting and interesting than the VFL.
The gap overall between the GV and VFL seniors is HUGE, VFL senior footy is as hard and tough and quick as you will will get outside the AFL. However the gap overall from the VFL 2s to the GV seniors is just as large.
No doubting the good reserves sides like Port,Willy,Sandy and North Ballarat would be more than competitive in the GV and would be able to match the Euroas and Seymours however the VFL 2s drops away very very quickly.
As an overall standard the VFL 2s is miles the GV as is the GV with the VFL seniors, in saying that i do think that alot of the good players in the GV would more than hold themselves in VFL senior footy.
cheers

mate, my instincts along with my wallet were towards carte diamond. I was a big rap for him and thought it'd be a huge show. its record over that distance is pretty good and its lead-up seemed impressive enough. so obviously I was crying y'day when I heard what had happened.

Yes yes very much agree. Like Railings alot, and Vinne Roe but thats because of seen them run, dont know alot about these raiders. The fact that distinction is over here again, and hasnt raced in much lead could be a factor.
Apart from the obvious ones, i liked, like a jeunes run, even tho it was in very much a lower class.
Im ganna put my head out and call distinction early, only for that reason above, ill need to have a closer look! But obviously Railings could get my money.

Squeek Mcmahon has beenw ith the roosters for a bit, more recently spending the majority of time int ehreserves. Is an impact player who does good thigns in bursts. His claim to fame is that he was drafted one pick before Simon Black to ***whoever*** in the **** national draft.

They certainly do have 3 handy recruits! Jezza is a gun mid-fielder/half back, Timmy Rass can play anywhere, but you'd expect would be used as a forward, as he would be capable of kicking 70-80 in the EFL and McMahon, on his day, is an absolute freak. Rarely plays a game where he doesn't kick a goal. Wouldn't have played at that standard of footy since he was prob 15-16, so if he puts his mind to it, he could have a huge impact for Blackburn.. Doubt even with those 3 they could win the flag, but expect them to be very dangerous..

yeah, good call, hadn't thought of that. Although Timmy played a couple of years at West Preston (whose grounds are worse and smaller), and although he didn't tear the DVFL apart, he was still a good player for them. Doubt Jezz or McMahon would have played on anything worse though...interesting to see if it makes a difference..

last time I was talking to jezz he said he was going to implement the flooding bull$h!t when they play at home next year ala geelong v the swans in the semi final (only done successfully for 3 bloody quarters!!). if true it makes for some pretty boring footy at blackburn next year, although I think and hope he was joking.

I do not want to be quoted as saying ``she can't win'', but I struggle to see how Makybe's gunna win the great race off the back of a 2000m preparation when you've got the likes of Vinnie Roe and Leica Falcon that have been set for the Cup all along.
I'll say this, though; I hope like heck she does run. We'll be getting $3 about Leica Falcon is she doesn't run, where as if she's there the Falcon will be around the $4.50/$5 mark/.

What are their records like at Mansfield? Don't think Jezza would mind the small confines too much (actually, it would probably suit him), but "BOS" (Brother of Sharelle) McMahon and Timmy would both be better if they had a bit of space to work in..

jezz and timmy's record at that poor excuse of a ground isn't too bad I guess - if they had of been playing for rochy in the more recent times it mightn't look so flash though. rochy always used to go to mansfield and pump the $h!t out of them - how times have changed in the past couple of years!!
yeah I agree it wouldn't really bother jezz (aka lingy) playing on the smaller type grounds, however timmy's game may suffer a little. as for mcmahon, from what I remember he relies a hell of a lot on run and space - something he may not get much of at home games next year. then again, I don't think I have seen him play since his pioneers and kangaroos days so I really wouldn't have a clue.

Hmmm, don't really have much at the moment Doona.
There was an article in Shepp. News about the draw being tweaked a bit. I don't have it in front of me, but I think Tatura requested something and Rochester wanted one of their last two games to be at home.
I believe the updated draw will come out early next week.
Also, Rochester have advertised for a weights coach, reserves coach and thirds coach.
Not sure about the weights coach. I assume that this person will be a general fitness person that helps players develop a progam and makes sure they stick to it. In theory, it's not a bad idea because the club has a fair few young blokes, so it's good to build them up. Also, it free David Williams to concentrate more on the match day things.

Travvy, Jock will coach again, Stevo as far as im aware will have 1 more season with the Saints and Ricky Symes i would assume will stay as his employment and life is in Benalla.
I only know of Adam Cosham who is heading to Port Melbourne from Benalla but other than him i dont think they would lose any players, there a pretty tight nit group of mates.

Have a mate who plays VFL (North Ballarat) and know a bit about his club, but Im not privvy to the difference in pay from VFL to GVFL. Could anyone shed some light as to whether GVFL clubs match or better VFL clubs in regards to match payments.
Doona 2 there isnt too much diffrence in payments from the VFL to the GVFL , In the VFL high priced players are on about 7 - 1,000 a game and your border line players are about 3 - $600 but the diffrence is you get taxed in the VFL, and you dont of course playing in the GVFL . So if your earning $800 in the VFL your only taking home $500, where you earn $500 in the GVFL you take that home.So a lot of the boys coming out of the VFL would probably get a little bit more than what they where in the VFL . Back to footy, word has it that Echuca are chasing up 7 or 8 blokes but still are highly against what seymour euroa etc. did last year and what other clubs, including echuca have done in the past. Go to the GVFL website click on the Echuca link and have a little browse through there policies etc. very interesting reading, ill post a little of it......

Introduction
The Echuca Football & Netball Club has a proud tradition that spans two centuries and is decorated with success. With a belief in the ability of the local youth and the confidence in the recruited experience, the club has been able to develop a formula that has seen much local success as well as many local players entering the higher echelons of the game; with thirteen Echuca players being drafted or signed to AFL (VFL) clubs in the modern era.
The 2005 senior GVFL Grand Final was a great game of football. Yet it had an undercurrent we must be careful not to be swept up in. Utilising the chequebook recruiting mentality does very little for the development of the ?local club?. There is a balance that needs to exist between on field success and the longevity of the local club environment. Of course the on field success is the quest; but there is very little to gain if the ?club? is the casualty in the search for the ?holy grail?. I believe it also worth reflecting on why so many Swans supporters waited for over 70 years for the premiership cup, if it is the only measure of success. For most of the past five years I believe the Echuca Football & Netball Club has nearly got the formula right.
This formula is better scrutinised by the senior football side?s twenty two finals appearances in the thirty years of their GVFL involvement. With greatest success being in the new millennium capturing back to back premierships in 2001 & 2002, followed by runners-up in 2003 and a finals campaign again in 2004; where all three grades of football competed and three of the four grades of netball were also in the finals action. The picture on field took a different shape in 2005; with both the senior and under 18 football sides off the mark for finals action. All but the under 17 netballers had a less than successful finals series. Although gallant in defeat, the young side fell short by one goal.

The last two years Derby Winners have been Plastered (115) and Elvstroem (114). Plastered beat Cox Plate winner Savabeel and Elvstroem beat fellow blue blood Kempinsky, who streeted the rest. Given the quality of those two horses mentioned and the apparent lack of depth in this field it can be safely stated that any horse who can rate 114 in this race will win it. In fact, in our opinion a 112 might be good enough, which is what we’ve set the race on. Here’s the table:

SUMMARY
HEADTURNER is the only horse in this race who has an expected peak above 112, and the only horse who we can reasonably see rating above 112. In the view of the Expertform rating’s, he is certain to do at least 112 and is more likely to find a peak of 114.
Consider the reasons why: Three starts ago, at MV over an unsuitable 1500m he ran a strong closing 2nd, rating 109. That was at an unsuitable track over an unsuitable trip. He was blocked in rounding the bend and only had the small MV straight in which to wind up. A 5 point level above that is 114. Next start, at Flemington, he ran a new best of 112, finishing too powerfully over 1800m to win. In that race, he ran his final 400m in 22.89, more than half a second faster than the next quickest final 400 in the race, a 23.42. It was the run of a horse who would have won by further had it been a race over further. It was the run of a horse not yet at his peak. Horse’s peak when they’re spent on the line, no energy left to rate with. Headturner was not spent rating 112 that day, meaning his expected peak is higher than 112.
Next start, and the reason for him being 2nd favourite behind Pendragon this Saturday, Headturner ran 2nd to Pendragon, beaten a short half head, at Caulfield over 2000m, rating 110. In that race he tracked Pendragon the whole way, gave him 2.5L straightening in a slow pace and just failed to run him down. This time, Headturner broke 23 for his final 400m, running it in 22.36 while Pendragon ran 22.59. Headturner ran his final 200 in 11.25 compared to Pendragon’s 11.45. The slow pace makes those sectionals a little flattering for both horses but the slow pace is also the reason Pendragon was able to hold Headturner out, and even then only just. The extra ground will suit Headturner more than Pendragon. He is a natural, strong stayer. If he finds a peak rating of 114, he will win the Derby. We conservatively rate him a $2.50 chance.
Third selection is the favourite PENDRAGON. We have mentioned his run in last start where he beat Headturner and the sectionals they ran above. This time, he won’t get it quite so easy. He has drawn very badly in 15 and will either have to lead or go back. If he goes back then he will be giving Headturner a start, which will make it very hard for him to win. He is a high class galloper however who in his last 3 runs has rated 112-111-110 and therefore could very well make a 117 horse as a 4yo, which will make him a regular in the Group 1’s. However, he is not a 117 horse yet and will not rate 117 in this Derby. To say he could rate 117 already would be to say he is 1.5 lengths superior to how Elvstroem was at the same time. That is plainly not true. The best he can do in it is 112, which although makes him a chance certainly does not make him a $2.70 chance, which he is currently in the market. However, for the reasons stated above this horse is a query at the 2500m. He might have no problem with it, but at Caulfield he was not as strong as Headturner on the line and even the 4th horse Point Made was running a faster final 200 than him. He is a definite query to last the trip, which is why we have given him 111 instead of 112 and rated him a $9.0 chance.
Thats why i wont back Pendragon mate, serioulsy get on Headturner, these guys are spot on.
cheers
