Righto, so they've got a few injuries (you'd think they were the only ones).
Does that excuse them being embarrassed, yes embarrassed (I borrowed that word from all the people appraising Essendon's performance on Friday night - at least they only lost by 138 points), by a side that also has its fair share of injuries?
And didn't the Euroa Seconds make the grand final last year? Thought that might have given people reason to believe there was a bit of depth at the club. If that was the case they would have at least got within 10 goals of Benalla.
Not the easiest of runs in the next five rounds either with Kyabram, Shepp, Mooroopna, Echuca and Seymour (three of which - including the last 2 - are away from home) to come.
Perhaps the Maggies can beat the rush and plan their footy trip for some time in September...
Pretty sure it was a Shepp/Benalla ressies grand final in 2005. The Magpies injury toll couldn't be any worse than Seymour's, but they mightn't have the depth to cover such big losses - long way to go yet and I'd expect Gleeson's boys to get it on track by the time we hit September.

Yep, the Doon's right; Benalla beat Euroa in the Prelim in the Scoobies last year.
That said, the Maggies appeared to really fancy themselves in the Twos this year (or so the chatter before the game against Seymour in Rd 1 indicated), suggesting they'd further strengthened their list.
140 points is a lot.

Watched my first (full) Rochy game yesterday and they were fantastic, defeating a more fancied Mansfield. After kicking 4 goals to 1 in the opening 15 mins, Rochy looked pretty good. However, Mansfield is a quality team, kicking 7 goals in the 2nd quarter to be ahead by 3 goals at half time. The last half was good footy, although marred by scrapiness and lots of turnovers.
With a couple of minutes to go and Rochy trailing by 5 points, Nathan Whipp took a mark on the wing, handballed to Sam Brennan, got it back and then kicked a goal from 50m. The ball was bounced in the middle and Mansfield cleared it, but kicked it straight back to Whipp. Fantastic game of footy.
With the injurys that euroa have had this year and there so called cockyness, how far is Nathen Gilliland away from playing !? and on injurys whats the word on swannies recruit Josh WILSON, when is he likely to start his season !?
It seems that we all have the same conversation every week in regards to euroa and their injuries. Bottom line is, they have a large number of big name injuries and are not winning games. Depth or no depth, if they want a spot in september finals, those L's need to be replaced with W's asap!!!!!!!!

Yer Euroa will obviously get some quality players back but how much damage is going to be done by then? Possibly miss the finals or sneak 6th & it's pretty hard to win it from there.
I actually think Rochester could press for a finals spot yet their behind the eight ball but a win such as yesterday against Mansfield will do wonders for their confidence.

I see the bears snatched a win over the cats on the weekend. From what i hear the cats went into the game thinking that they were already world beaters. They will need to be on the job to challenge the lions at the den this weekend.

Whippy what a bloody legend!! Typical rochy win, lets hope we see a few more before the season's end.
What Happened to the Magpies, in the seniors, on the weekend? How many did they have out? Big suprise!

Brad Campbell sitting out the 2nd half with a sore back and then playing with 16 after two blokes were sent off wouldn't have helped the Cats one bit
That is an unbelievable win by Benalla on the weekend. The injuries must be running deeper at magpie land then what we think. Can anyone from magpie land shed some light on what transpired at memorial oval on saturday. Would be interesting to see what they think went wrong and where they are going to show last years form at all. Another loss to Kyabram this weekend would almost put the finals out of reach. Pretty hard for a team to come back from a pounding like that on their home turf. I believe they are gone this year, cant see them even making the finals. Might be a team of stars on paper, but they dont seem to gel as a team from looking at the score over the last few weeks. There might be bigger problems then just injuries, who knows? Anyone?
Are Benalla that good is the next question? Did they have a full team bar Symes at full forward.
Mooroopna failing against the bears is also a suprise with the way they have been playing of late. My prediction on the cats is if you stop big Singh you can beat the cats. They dont have to many other options up forward. He kicked a bag ful in the 1st half and Mooroopna were flying. Well held in the 2nd half and they lose.
Good to see Rochy on the winners list.
I reckon Seymour would be quietly confident going back to back this year. Stood upto every test this year and still have a swag of stars out.
wondering what peoples thoughts are on Matt Sharp, was a star in cgfl at 17, is he up there in the gv? would he be in the leagues best 22, not the interleague but the actual best 22

swans boys believe to see him at some stage later in the year. has a foot injury or disease not sure? has been on the track only 1 or 2 times this season.
swans players are a bit unsure of his football ability, but judging by size and "flair" can play a bit! one things for sure, hes definalty a big unit, so if he is a muppet on the field, will be good for a bump or two!
keeping the swans all entertained off the field... a livewire in that department!

wondering where colbert from seymour came from? where did he play previously and how old?
Brent colbert was on the western bulldogs list from 2001-2003. Injured his thumb and was out for 10 matches which was one disspaionting thing for him as he may have been able to have a real crack at AFL. When delisted he went to the northern bullants and now.. here we are with him carving up at GV level.

I agree, although you can't write Euroa off completely, and they have obviously been unlucky this season, there is only so many more games they can lose before they are a real chance of missing september action..and I'm not sure if they'll have a good match up for Newman, or not..so this week is another danger game for them..the comp is so even this season that you can't pencil many games in as 'certainties'..
I also agree that Seymour are looking the goods for going back-to-back, they have a similar amount of players on the injury list as Euroa do, and have passed each test they've faced this year. They're purring along nicely and still have a lot of room for improvement..

Can't bouch for the whole night, but it was a great atmosphere in the social club rooms after the game. With dirty having a smile from ear to ear. The win didn't seem to phase the little whippit too much though, was more phased with how his footy bets went thoughout the day I think. he he. :) I did however notice that the great-man was still carving up the OPT dancefloor in the wee hours of sunday morning, so he celebrated the win in true style.

Before this season only the coach got payed.. and they havent forked out much money now either, from what i know they are paying players travel money as the town is short on footballers because of young players moving elsewhere, me for one, Sharpy, Jimmy Saker, so yeh wouldnt say there are money scabbers round vt!!

So you do have "scabbers". Euroa have had Melb based players for around the last 20 years and for the same reasons that you stated about the towners. Jobs in the smaller towns just aren't there any more. So i don,t think that it's much to do with current form. May be the next three weeks will sort it all out with the pies getting some players back.

Spot on! What is gonna happen when the melbourne based players call it a day? A lot of the young players get disheartened because they arent being given a chance so they move on. All of a sudden the clubs in a bit of a hole wondering why no one has come through the system.
Saw the Swans V tat game Saturday. Swans won by ten goals but were very disappointing. No real game plan. Handball it anywhere. If this team is second then GV footy has really slipped. Saw a funny thing. Only one umpire in Ist half. Some bloke comes from the crowd and helps out in 2nd half.

good to hear from u kanye. half melb players don't even socialise with the local boys running around in the curtain raiser, and with those that get the call up. Ego's r a bit big after last year one would think. You for one kanye would no the feeling. Only now are the senior team stating to realise your potential. They should be playing guys who will put heart and soul into playing for the black and white. Rumour has it some young blood will be tried out against ky after last weeks performance
Dont forget though that alot of the players that do train in melb are actually locals, just living in melb for uni/work etc!!!!! Would i be right in saying that Seymour have a similar set up. The GV is now one of the best country leagues in Australian football and very competitive. There is no room any more for the player who hides away from the club , says he is training but is not. They are found out very quickly no matter how big the name. Every player who has won a flag at this level of footy will look back and find that luck with injuries is a factor.

I had to move two and a half hours to go to school... i didnt want to leave but it wasnt a feasible option to be able to get back every week.. i'll be back at the towners as soon as can be..
The main reason i paid out euroa and its large amount of melbourne based players is because i grew up with 6 or 7 very talented young magpies who are know very disheartened that they have to be put into the two's and left for dead, but in 2 or 3 years when the have moved elsewhere for oppotunities the club will have no one, and that hurts a country town.
Euroa would still be a very competitive side if it only had 4 or 5 melb based players and gave its starved locals a chance, there isnt that greater luck of talent in the town

to be honest i couldnt really care about all the politics, as easy as it would be to give a stuff, so long as your running out with your mates to play footy, thats all one needs. Agreed it would be nice to have club full of locals, but at the moment thats not case, so just enjoy the game. i would much rather run out in the magoos with the blokes you've been mates with since a kid.....

lets set one thing straight scooby-doo, if you can find another group of melb based players that socialise with the locals of there chosen club better than the boys playing with euroa then your doing well. guys i know personally in gibson, grainger, mcbrien inpaticular have been the best thing for this club in years. they have all the qualities any footy club would wish for.i am not saying there is not the equal of these guys out there at other clubs but let it be said there are none better. for everyone else writing off the magpies do at your own peril. in the next 2 weeks returning - clarke, gilliland, thompson(ash),gibson, and hilton. some pretty handy inclusions with others to come!!!
I dont think anyone with any knowledge of the Euroa Football Club is writing them off. I still think they are the big threats for Seymour going back to back. Must admit tho i haven't seen the swans perform but will do so in 2 rounds which is set to be a blockbuster!!

I don't think anyone has written them off completely yet, Jazzy, but even though a lot of their misfortune this year has come through injuries, they can't afford to drop too many more games, or they're a chance of missing the 6 altogether, or missing out on a top 3 berth...Seymour only lost 4 games last year and finished 3rd, and the maggies have already lost 4 this year...I reckon it's a massive test for them this week against Ky..
By the way Jazzy - have you and Alf gone to AFL headquarters to market your tennis-footy invention?? And have you seen a worse player than yours truly??

Swans are a very good team and will be there abouts come september. Some very quality players in mcarty, warburton, sutherland and now yze back for them.
As for the standard of umpiring in the gvfl, its slowly becoming worse. If anyone has been involved in the reserves or even watched the reserves there is 1 umpire going around that is a disgrace. Dont know his 1st name but surname is Watts. Has an afro and is young. Good on him for giving it a go but he should stop umpiring. If he continues there will be a game that will erupt and fight break out which wont be stopped. He has no control over the game, doesnt get to right positions to make decisions, walks around, you cant hear himuse his whistle and when he does, you cant hear which way he gives the decision. All up he is a shocker.
hey mr perry do i know you?? Sorry if i do and can't remember. I think what you say about the losses could be valid but i think it's a bit more even a comp this year and if they can get up and running they can get on a streak. God knows they have the players!

kanye (trent carrol wannabe) playing footy with your mates is one of the greatest things ever, espeecially if you ahve played footy all through the juniors with them. Every town has its locals that will stick around the club through thick and thin more often than not because they want to stick with their mates. Many i know would bust there ar$e for their mates and their club if given the chance. As VT#23 mentioned there is a group of 5 or 6 locals that have played footy for Euroa for many years that are not getting the opportunity to play at the top level, even if their own form warrants it. What do others think? ?

spot on and also that old spud bloke yeah hes getting old but he cannot umpire to save his life. u yell out ball or somethign and he pays it. and when he cant keep up he calls a free kick so the ball comes back towards him. i just wish umpires would let us play and let it role on instead of pulling up stupid little free kicks.

I have been watching a little bit of under 18's footy this year just to see if there are any young kids coming through with some talent, and I see that Scotty McKenzie from Seymour has been going pretty well at full back for the thirds and is coming fourth in the better player award. I was just wondering if he was going to make a senior appearance. do any of the Seymour boys have an idea if he will or not?:thumbsu:
Whoever said that Shepp Swans were dissapointing from the sounds of it has little to no clue. They for the first half were a side that probably underestimated us a bit but in the 2nd half i would say that they are the best team we have played against.
They have a really good bunch of bigs in the forward line that are hard to match up on and a heap of onballers who can kick goals.
A bit annoyed about how we went as we were leading 10 mins into the 3rd qtr, we have probably to many young guys who will play well for 60% of the game but struggle to put 4 qtrs together. In time they will become better but as i said at the start of the year we are 4 or 5 players of being a good side.
cheers

I have played & watched footy for the last forty years in GV, Bendigo & now Sunraysia and the one day I saw Lemnos Swans they were disappointing because they had no game plan. They have some very good players and I hope they win some finals because most Shepp people hang it on them. People also hang it on Sunraysia footy but If Swans are second then sides like Imperials, Mildura & irymple are about the same standard.

Big call Sonny, think you might be getting slightly ahead of your self
must agree that the standard of umpiring is terrible at the moment. the games i have seen they either over officiate or dont want to pay anything. something i find funny is the experienced ump with the young guy. in most cases the young fella is a better umpire and is forced to listen to the old dill who doesnt know the rules. i know we need them, but surely there is better quality out there somewhere.

It seems to be a common theme everywhere though.
Might have to put the Ump fee up a bit to get some more blokes with whistles in their gobs and create some better one's.
Any other theories?

Two theories-
Pay decent money $250 a game and you may have people between 25-35 give it go.
Second forget the umpires. Every year people whinge. Good sides get the footy and don't need to worry. In the AFL when the pressure is on a coach, they start to whinge about umpires. It happens between rounds 12 to 16 every year. AFL coaches bull **** & spin every week. Sheedy & Wallace spin the lines every week.
kanye (trent carrol wannabe) playing footy with your mates is one of the greatest things ever, espeecially if you ahve played footy all through the juniors with them. ?
Who are the 5 or 6 who should be getting a game??

good to hear from u kanye. half melb players don't even socialise with the local boys running around in the curtain raiser, and with those that get the call up. Ego's r a bit big after last year one would think. You for one kanye would no the feeling. Only now are the senior team stating to realise your potential. They should be playing guys who will put heart and soul into playing for the black and white. Rumour has it some young blood will be tried out against ky after last weeks performance
A very angry ant......
Bit of goss on the selection front this week. In a boost to Euroa, Ky will be going in without Newman, but will regain the services of Jimmy Taylor, and their junior player who plays Bushies (reardon (?)).
Also, Stevie Daniels may have pulled off another recruiting coup, with a former Northern Bullants player in a similar mould to Brent Colbert coming along to training this week and a chance to make his debut next week...gun player who would give them a lot of extra bite..and is coming for nothing but a chance to play in a flag with his mates..
Also, had a mate who went and watched the Euroa v benalla clash on the weekend and apparently after one of Euroa's gun recruits got dragged, heated words were exchanged with the coach...Gleeso still not happy...

Nearly 20 years since i have played or watched a game of GV but gentlemen if you think the standard of umpiring is not good in country Vic, come and have a look at what we put up with in southern NSW. The First thing that you notice is how bad the umps can be. In the two's up here we have a volunteer from each club do it. And it's usualy a past player from each club who knows a little about the game not some poor bastard who has taken it up for a bit of fittness. Believe it or not i think it works.

Scotty is going to be a good player when he is a bit older. He backed up his under 18 match on saturday with a solid contribution in the reserves on the weekend as we were short.
I couldn't see him playing senior footy infront of a host of solid senior players running around in the reserves, and with up to 6 blokes to come into the senior side in the next month (pending no more injuries), i think scotty will get a taste of senior footy through the reserves more than the ones this year.
Will no doubt put his hand up for reserves finals should the under 18's miss.

Let them say what they want to. We know who the true supporters and who the fair weather supporters are. In fact the whole club know who they are. Its no skin off our nose what the fair weather ones say about us. we just ignore what is said about us and try and win some games.

Very well played, Spike. Great to get some factual analysis. Perhaps Yogi Berra was right, and half this game really is 90% mental!
Is the question then how to bring that mental side to play?
Sounds too like the Euroa gents could spend more time considering how to develop the Powells, Burls', Gillilands etc., rather than writing them off as inconsistent, with no football brains and no skills. Very rough comments for what I assume to be team-mates.
On a different side, very good to see 3 brothers playing together at Shepparton - the Chapmans. Unsure how many other sides would ever have had 3 or more brothers playing in the one senior side. I believe Euroa in the 70s had 4 Thomsons (another brother in the 80s?), although they never all played in the one side together.

Nah Doona, probably wont play in the later game at all this year, which doesnt really bother me to much. Anderson has played 98 games for the club, while the other 3 are all u/18 players that will play their 1st games for the club this weekend. We have to try something.

Tips for this week.
Euroa over Kyabram by 12 goals. Obviously we're under the pump at the minute, and the best way to get the monkey off our back is with a good win. The loss of Newman will hurt Ky significantly.
Echuca to beat Shepp Bears by 2 goals. The Murray Bombers have a good on-ball outfit and a huge target in White up forward. Have heard a whisper that Byers is in doubt, so he may miss or at best go into the game carrying a slight quad strain.
Seymour to get over Mooroopna by 3 goals. Whoever plays on big Singhy (likely to be Anderson or Piling) will have their work cut out for them, and he will need to kick a handful if the Cats are to get over the line.
Benalla to beat Rochy by 6 goals. At the saints home ground and with some fire power back from injury, Benalla will be too strong.
Mansfield to beat Tat by 5 goals. Mansfield at Mansfield is still a tough gig for any team.
Swans to beat United by 1 goal. I reckon this will be match of the round. Forys to kick a bagful, which will keep United in the game until the end.
Any news on how Elliot Bowen Is going? used to play with him in Bendigo. heard he has being getting a few kicks....

Holy ****!!!! Euroa have sure copped a lotta crap all week!!!! Cannot believe this!! But when a talented team like Euroa gets flogged, criticism like that is warranted I guess? But I'm sure they will regroup this week and smack a Newman-less Ky and get their season back on track. And a word of advice Footyboss - not a good idea to say ur teammates are not good enough on a public forum - it will come back and bite u on the arse! Good luck this week, but I hope u guys lose!!! Nothing against u, but it would be interesting (and funny) to see how much more **** euroa will cop if they lose!!!
Me head says Euroa by 10 goals
If shepp can beat Mooroopna, then they should knock of Echuca at home in a close one - by 3 goals
Jeff Anderson to keep Singh to less than 4 and Seymour over Mooroopna 5 goals - Duff Man, this should easily be Match of the Round 1st vs 3rd? (not Swans & United!)
Benalla by 8 goals over Rochy
Mansfield at home on the worlds most pathetic excuse for a football reserve should take care of Tatura by 6 goals. And to the Mansfield president, get some f^^king seating on the cow paddock. Or better yet, bulldoze the ground and rebuild!!!!
Finally, Shepp Swans over united by 8 goals.
Good Luck all
TIPS FOR THE WEEK!!
Euroa in a close one over kyabram by 3 goals
Echuca to beat the bears by 8 pts
lions to beat tthe cats by 7 goals
saints to beat the tigers by 6 goals
swans easily over the demons
and mansfield by 10 goals over tat
pies by 6 goals over the demons on monday
GO PIES!!

Most of the boys in question have played seniors over the past 3 or 4 seasons. Dont think they have been given many chances to string any games together. 3 U/18's in, yet not one of these boys who have been toiling for the club since they were 16. Loyalty can work both ways.

Now sitting here at longwood i have to agree that gleeson playing three first gamers in an attempt to get out of this slump is a bit surprising, i recognise they are the future of the club but so are some of the reserves players. As has been said they might not have the football brain, but dont you get a better idea about the game playing better football in the seniors? i must admit though that he has to try something.

Plenty of loosing consistancy. I think Euroa are very lucky to be playing Kyabram this week.
