From what ive heard around the traps at Rochy is that all Bendigo based players will stay at rochy for another year at least. Bowen still wants to play VFL footy but needed a year or two to get his body right. Would be very surprised even if he was to leave he wouldn't go that far north.
Has Rochy had their B&F yet?

Total disgrace if you ask me. Who made the gvfl team of the year anyway?
The article doesn't say. I think it's the media.

HB: Tim Hooper (Seymour) - Anthony Mellington (Shepparton) - Josh Walker (Mansfield)
C: Matt McCarty (Swans) - Steve Hazelman (United) - Matt Storer (Mansfield)
HF: Ross Hopkins (Mansfield) - Matt Forys (United) - Brad Campbell (Mooroopna)
F: Saad Saad (Seymour) - Balraj Singh (Mooroopna) - Mark McKenzie (Benalla)
R: Marc Harrap (Shepparton) - Trent Hotton (Mansfield) - Brett Warburton (Swans)
I: Colin Durie (Echuca) - Barry Fitzpatrick (Swans) - Luke Hyatt (Euroa)

Captain: Trent Hotton (Mansfield)
Whilst Seymor will have their spies at Deakin this Sunday, my question to Lions fans is who's got the job the following weekend of tagging local legend Chad Bonney so that if Seymour can win he doesn't bob up in the Weekly Times or GVFL round 1 photo's like this time last year?
Tha group shot on Deakin after the game woulda went down as one of the great photo's from a memorable day for the club - but all I can see now is over the top came Chad with a perfectly timed run and somehow managed to get his head in there!!!

Would his number be 31 for the saints??? I think he is normally in and out of the seniors. Flat track bully should be able to tell your more
yeah thats him 31 he is a real hard nut isnt he, although he is i would say he is very underated, we played benalla a few weeks ago and he can play if he doesnt try and belt ppl. he was on and off alot though dont no y any thoughts

Once again the G.V has failed to deliver on one of it's big nights.
They would have to be dissapointed with roughly half of the team of the year not showing up. Even worse when several from Melbourne made the effort whilst some locals didn't bother showing.
Also, I would like to know what the selection criteria is for this side. Quite a few selections left a lot a people dumbfounded.

Shane Clayton and Linc Wellington missing out. The Morrison medalist starting on the Bench. One back pocket has played up forward for most of the year. Porter missed out due to missing several games whilst I believe a back flanker my have missed a similar amount.

well few strange ones in the team of the year, and even a few stranger ones left out!
for starters where were these guys - x.campbell (ech),c.maher (swans) + all-australian! dundovic (swans), finn (ky), wellington (tat) 10 votes in medal in a side that had one win! e.bowen (roch), we've already mentioned clayton, and maybe a few more guys from the minor premiers!
as for the ones that were in, ill start with pilling, who correct me if im wrong played most of the year up forward. i thik hazelman could have been swapped for durie on the bench. has saad really had that good of a year? ive only seen around 4 of his games, other than that just going on what the papers said. and warburton, very lucky, possibly just playing a supporting role this year in the swans midfield. while the interchange - fitzpatrick and hyatt, well theres been better this year i believe...
just having my say...

I agree FF. Very odd to leave out players like Clayton and Wellington....doesn't appear to be consistent with the criteria but if it's voted by various media thats bound to happen.

I agree that some of the selections are a bit out of left field, however Saad finished on 99 goals last year and has kicked 90 so far this year. I'm happy for you to suggest some other names, but until you can give me a better option, I think he deserves his spot in the fwd pkt.
Teams of the year are good in merrit to reward players who go unrewarded. If they aren't done by the right people with the right criteria then they're a joke which is unfotunate for those who do make it' cos the credibillity of it suffers. Teams of the century are the same. Take Euroa's for a very good example.

[QUOTE=Xander]Watched the game yesterday and was very impressed with the Seymour outfit. Seemed to start slow, but looked always in control - especially with so many more scoring shots. Do not think Mansfield or Benalla will be anywhere near good enough to topple that side, especially with a week off and no more apparent injuries. Can anyone tell me if Bailey and Haberman will be back for the big one?[QUOTE]
As I have said many times before on this thread, if I were Seymour i wouldnt be hoping for Bailey to play. He is the most injury prone player going around and they really dont need him to win the flag. They proved that last year. As for habers Im sure you will see him run out onto Deakin for the main game in 2 weeks time. He will wear the helmet again similar to last year. I thinkthey will win the grand final very easily.
If Benalla manage to get over the eagles this week I'm sure that the Lions would want the second Ruckman, but may consider Elliot ahead of Bailey. However should the Eagles get up it wouldn't suprise to see the Lions go with just the one recognised Ruckman with support from Pilling, Gordan, and maybe Jeff Anderson. Haberman will almost certainly play, leaving the question of who will miss out. After Rob Inness' role on Sheehan last week surely he would be safe, perhaps Pemberton may be the unlucky one.

There's always stories of disappointment this time of year. If Bailey and Haberman do play there sure will be two unlucky players dropped - but in saying that they will still get the chance to play in a grand final for their club. The real disappointment will be for the couple of blokes that may be forced out of the two's side and wont get a grand final at all.
Was rapt to see Rob do ok on Sunday and would love to see him in the late game Sunday week - thats a big call on Pemberton POSTMAN especially as this is your 1st appearance on our thread!!!

If the Lions pick a second ruckman and Bernie comes in as you would expect then Two from last week will miss out on the main game.No doubt Thomo will go back to the Ressies but what are your thoughts on the other unfortunate soul. For mine it would have to be Pemberton, Inness or G. Liddell. Personally I would leave Pemberton out as I think he is the most easily covered.Inness has proved to be a very handy tagger and Jezza is the only genuine crumming forward.

Gezza , a crumming forward , Has kicked just over ten goals for the year ? Not a good return in a side like Seymour , heard hes had a shocking year and should of been dropped weeks back for Dom Russo. Dont be surprized if hes the unlucky one

Might not of had a great year Duffy , but hes still very important to the lions side. As we saw on the weekend SJ uses him forward , back , and in tagging roles [ Maher Shepp swans ] and on the weekend on Reynoldson. As to weather Dom should be in the side ahead of him or not, well everyones got there own thoughts. You wernt talking to Doms dad on the weekend Duffy. As Doona said someone will be disappointed come next week, but can still be apart of the big day in the ressies.

Thought Gez did ok on Jimmy Herridge & Reynoldson, good 3rd term on Sunday and no chance he'll miss the big one after his 4th quarter efforts in last seasons GF.

Do you really think Euroa's team of the century is a joke, Head67? In what regard? I'd have thought Euroa's team of the century was a very good reflection of a successful period through the 60s and 70s. Sure, some debateable points (as you will always get with these teams), particularly the likes of Storer, but in all, I wouldn't have thought it was a poorly picked side.
As a semi-side point, I see the father of current Brisbane Lions ruckman, Jamie Charman, was the ruckman for that team - Ed.

Doesn't necessarily make it lack credibility. There are others from the earlier period who weren't selected in the side that would compare favourably with the two you've named.
The only solution to that kind of problem is to never have such teams done officially. They are only done as a fundraiser/reunion anyway, but do make for a great night/weekend. Maybe it's better for supporters to debate and draw up their own sides. You are always going to have disappointed people.

Unlike in your league Rushy Tiger, the top players in the GV generally have a bit of versatility about them and don't spend all their time in one place.
While most consider him a forward, the Gerbil's actually spent quite a bit of time in the past couple of season in the backline and, believe it or not, started on the wing in last year's grand final.
I must admit I was a little bit surprised to hear he'd only kicked 12 goals for the year but, also in the GV, we don't judge players solely on goal returns. You won't find many "crumbing forwards" that work as hard defensively as what he does.
The fact that Gerard grates on opposition clubs so much indicates to me that the Lions are a better side with him in the team.

Well done to Seymour in gettin both the Seniors and the seconds into the big one, will Daniels hang round if they win back to back??? i have been informed he looks set to leave at the end of this year. Also heard that if Amad coaches there will be a number of players go elsewhere.
yeah i agree that pemberton should be the unlucky one, hasn't had a great year and i think the other 2 deserve to be there more.
i know i'm a bit late to comment on the gv side of the year but how did scanlon from seymour miss out, i know he missed a few games but surely should have got a spot. Not sure where you got your info from...heard nothing of the sort. Joey Amad would be a great coach and is loved around the club.
Might be a case of some people not liking the truth, joey calls a spade a spade, and because of that would be a very good coach.

Has been a great effort turkey, Coxy should get all the credit. He recruited SJ to the club 2 years back in his grand plan that he had , and two years down the track we have a flag and both sides are in another Grand Final. The whole club has just changed its culture, We all hope we can go back to back and SJ would stay for a 4th year , but as Footyboss said hes made it pretty clear hes moving on . And Joey would make a good coach as would Habers, as the fat back pocket said joey calls a spade a spade and one or two mighten like that. But he is very, very popular let me say that.

If he were injured and not playing seniors, all fair. But otherwise, should be rules against doing that...especially when the depth of reserves footy is so low. You play the bottom sides, you can afford to play with the bare 18 and name 4 senior players on the bench to qualify them. You'd get 6 of those games a year easy.

I think you will see us put up a better performance then last week, yes we did match the lions in the 2nd half but the game was already over by then. We have a slightly better team running around this week compared to last week.
I think you will find in most teams at this time of year, most players that are playing are carrying niggling injuries into games. Very rare for everyone to be fresh and fit.

I was in Qld mid season so not sure who played 1's or 2's.
But if so it works both ways, someone like Meka, who kicked 6 last week in the 2's, started off in the seniors, got dropped, went overseas, came back and had played 5 reserves games before finals and about 5-6 senior games.
Both seniors and reserves played the 1st weekend and 2nd weekend of finals, he played reserves twice.
So i think the rules aren't going to please everyone, and some people are lucky, while others like Meka are unlucky.

Night before Grand Final. Will rowey make a welcome return to tigerland?
Hey Rushy Tige, is Heath Aitken odds on favourite for Rochy's B&F? Who are the smokeys? Sam Brennan had a fairly reasonable year by all accounts. What about 6'2" (6'8" with the afro) Adrian Pappin?

I think the 2's this week have a fair few changes to the side that played Euroa 5 weeks ago, I'm out of the side so it's advantage United already.
Shane Weatherly is back in and the seniors mentioned on the previous page.
I believe we were short when we travelled to Euroa while this time we had 7 players miss out.
Should be a cracker of a game.
Player to watch: Ash Round.
My tip: United by 3 pts.

Did Seymuor's 2's coach last year Jago officially apply - word around suggested he was interested? If Scott Watson was retiring as a few thought he may would he be a candidate as he's pretty popular?
Your on the money again Doona. Jago did apply for the job, one of many so far. Will be a good job to gain with the current playing list. Some talent on it.
In regards to Scott Watson, he wont be coaching Euroa next year. He thought about it, but has declined, Im pretty sure he will be giving it his all in going around again next season.

It would be a very nice job for a coach. Euroa were unlucky last year and just missed this year in a very tight comp. If they hold onto most of the players then they will challenge again. It would be a good stepping stone for someone with experience and with desire to move into VFL coaching.

Whos going to win the big game on sunday ,between the Eagles and the Saints. Benalla will have to play a little bit better than what they did against United last week if they are to win. If McKenzie can fire i think Benalla can win, Mansfield have had a big month, with big games against Euroa and United to get in the 6 , and then Swans in the first final and i think Seymour might have taken the sting out of the side last week . Arch rivals it should be a cracker of a game.

I dont know Jago, but talking to Clarkey and Grainz , Euroa would be a laughing stock if he got the job? Clarkey said not a bad bloke but has no idea about football . What was he like at Seymour , didnt he take them to a Grand Final in his first year ?

Dont know Jago personally, but the Lions musta saw something they liked in him to give him the job alongside Steve for a couple of years. Everyone's right though, would b a ripper job to get if the current group stuck together it will take bugger all to have em the side to beat in 2007

I think you do know Jag Duff Man. You did state in a post in the past that Jago has applied to coach Euroa. I believe you have known Jago for a number of years, dating back to the times when you were playing for the Preston Knights and he was the psychologist. Dont come on here pretending you dont know him. He was also your reserves coach in your first 2 years at Seymour. How is your jaw going by the way, any chance of playing in the big game in 2 weeks time?

Footyboss, how keen are you boys to stick around next year and have another crack at it?? are a few of the lads heading back up to play again or are you blokes gonna play back in Melbourne again?? would be tough asking for alot of use as it would be year 3-4 for a lot if use decided to play again in 2007. Any chance of Travvy Ryan being in contention for the senior job if he applied??
Benalla will smash Mansfield this weekend dont worry about that one, cant see the boys from the snow stopping the Saints big boys. In the end class will prevail and Benalla will win by 8 goals.

Mansfield have made a couple of key changes for tomorrow's game.
Looking to counteract Benalla's obvious height advantage, Bernie Jones has come into the side for Adam McCormick.
He is a gun player who rocked up in the pre-season and goes to uni at Mt Buller.
He starred in the early practices matches and would have been the 2nd ruck behind Mark Jones, but tore his achillies against Sandhurst in March.
He played two ressies games late in the season and has been brought in for his first senior game of the year (Shades of Adelaide in 1997 when Aaron Keating came in.)
*Sorry just trying to draw comparisoon to a premiership side.*
Dareen Wheeler is the other inclusion .. he's a goer, but has struggled at senior level.
Interesting selection and has come in for Reece Sonnberg.
The eagles will need to be at their best, but there is something about playing Benalla that generally brings out the best (although we have lost two close games to them this year) ... Third time lucky.
Symes was the difference in round one with 7 and is obviously not there this time, but I think Porter is the one who the eagles really need to stop ... Hotton and him should be a ripper duel.
Eagles by 14 points.
GO THE SNOW BUNNIES!!!!
PS - Keep an eye on Josh Walker - loves playing Benalla and while he's mates with some of them from school days, always seems to lift when playing the Saints.

I think people have had their wish for certain grand finals come true
Seymour- Benalla
Seymour-Euroa
Shepparton-Kyabram
Doesn't come more enjoyable than those three.
Also for those interested, this is not Benalla's first GV Grand Final. In 1940 Benalla came from the old Benalla-Mulwala league for one season and won the flag.
The war came, and from what I can gather Benalla went into recess, only to emerge in 1946 in the O and M, winning four flags in 52 seasons. 1952, 1962-63 and 1973.
Their last GF appearance was in 1978, beaten by the all-conquering Wangaratta Rovers who won seven flags in the 1970s.
So to those Mansfield people bagging Benalla about not winning a flag in the GV, we actually did it 64 years before you.
And to those so-called Eagles supporters who took great pride in punting the Benalla match committee during the game, that now makes two consecutive prelim finals losses. The noose now belongs around somebody elses neck.:D

In Mansfield's defence, it'd be easier on the mind to lose those two prelims after winning a flag in 2004.

I wouldn't say the finals pressure got to them. They played very, very well under 2nd semi final pressure last weekend against the yardstick in Seymour with Sheahan kicking 4 and being named Mansfield's best.
They deserve to be cut a little bit of slack.

More importantly is was good to see FOOTYBOSS' side get the chocolates to set up an enthralling decider with Seymour on Sunday. With Haberman and Bailey tipped to return to the Lions one's - the Two's will be strengthened also from last time they met.
Did Matty Mills play yesty mate, and will he be right for Sunday, wont make up 10 goals difference but certainly his presence and experience will be a factor I reckon?

Some big inclusions there for the lions. Who will get dropped?
Matty Mills did play mate and will be fine for Sunday. It was good to get over the line yesterday against Untied who were very cocky going into the game after dropping some players back. Typical of a front running team from Shepp. They are all the same, they dont like to do the hard work.
