Duane Hueston will be playing at Echuca United in 2007 and most likely 2008.

All those boys asked for is petrol money to get up to the games each weekend. All they want to do is play a full season at a good club within a good quality league, if the Diamond Valley Football League either shortens or cancels their season. From all reports they were more than impressed at the professionalism and culture of the club last weekend.

Must be dear petrol up your way pal :p

The eagles heirachy would be as upset as rushy would be if you left 2 weeks out from the first game of the season to Tav!!

Funnier things have happened hey Tav ;) Not too late my friend. In all seriousness though I'm a bit old school, if Duane Hueston needs to return to a better standard wish him well and he'll return to your club down the track. I know there's the whole Asst Coach thing which so late out must be unsettling but it seems ya's have a fair club up there and as long as he returns one day should be equally as important.

Besides for a touch more petrol money you might just jag a DVFL player to cover him :p

Seymour defeated East Burwood 10-7-67 to 6-9-45 at Kings Park.

Thought the attrocious winds ruined what I truly think woulda been a fair spectacle by two impressive football teams.

Colbert, Penn, Haberman, Pemberton all did some classy things in the conditions, Jim Kelly also showed glimpses, but for me I reckon Brendan Liddell just may be up for a big season. Did some things that made it appear to be windless at times. Schotty played a lot up forward, Spargo did a couple of handy things up forward too but got lead to the ball at times and Rocket Van Reit ran as hard as usual.

The highlight of the day for me was a 55m left footed barrell by Saad Saad back for the re-start after a goal in the 3rd term.

Greenvale gave Benalla a flogging in Benalla yesterday, speaking to one of the Greenvale boys he said they won by about 8 or 9 goals and was really disappointed with the Saints.

Tige is it true they were comprehensively defeated in all 3 games. Couldn't get there, had to to shampoo the mud flaps on the Kingswood.

yeah right, petrol money only. mouse, harley, kingy and jason dean are in the top 8 best players at north easily and would walk into any gv/dv senior sides. if your saying that there playing for petrol money only, the price of petrol in echuca must be about$18-$19 dollars a litre?

Rochy had a 20-30 point win over Wang on Saturday. Benny Anderson was looking exceptional and will be a massive recruit for the tigers. Heath Aitken also impressed, but their recruit from Eaglehawk didn't impress as much as they'd hoped..

And I can confirm 100% that Duane Hueston has told Echuca United that he is playing with Shepp United in 07.. Massive get for the demons, obviously a few upset at the eagles nest..

If this is true ( which i hope it is) y hasnt he been playin in uniteds practice matches? and do u know if he is playin against rochy this weekend?

Tigers take on United

March 27 2007
Campaspe News

Rochester Football Netball Club continues its preparation for the 2007 season with a full-scale practice match on Saturday at Rochester Recreation Reserve.
With a relatively successful recruiting campaign over the summer break, both senior and reserve sides should field competitive units.

The senior side, under the captaincy of Heath Aitken, with vice captains Dean Moon and Kahl Oliver, sees a shift in the leadership group to the young guns of the team.

Aitken, a courageous player in his own right, will certainly lead by example, as will his vice captains.

Ash Watson, Ben Anderson, Carl Moon, Mark Watson, Andrew Palmer and Nick Knight, as recruits, show the direction the club has taken in recruiting local, wellestablished footballers back to the club.

Add in Phil Lobbs, Brad Crockett, Jarrod Ezard, Brad Major and Mark Emmerson, then toss in Anthony McPhee, Clint Whitsed, Mick Loughman, Elliot Bowen, Daniel Schmidt, Russ Weekley, Brodie Montague, Adrian Pappin, Scott Hann, Matt Letcher, Matt Hyden, Nathan Whipp, Dylan Cuttris, Sam Williams, Lachy O'Connor, Tim Bubb, Matt Penny, Matt Haitsma and Paul Crockford and the depth of the team stacks up against any opposition in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

The reserves, under coach David Moon, and captained once again by Brayden Aitken, will have some good players going around, adding pressure for the senior group to perform each week - something the club has not had for a long time.

Depth will play a huge part in the 2007 season and each player will need to be at their best to keep their spot.

The thirds have been struggling for numbers, but, with commitment from Greg Doolan to help out coach Michael Haisman and assistant Greg Ingram in talking to the district boys and building up numbers, the situation should be rectified by the season start on April 14.

The off-field side of the club has it in a strong state with Barry Powles as president, Glenn Anderson vice president, Rob Aitken assuming the role as football manager and David Hodgens going into his 15th year as senior team manager.

Mansfield is hopeful of putting ground for concern behind it

By Christie Peucker

March 28 2007
Shepparton News

Mansfield Football Club will host a home game as early as round three after receiving much-needed rain during the past fortnight.
Club president Mike Morrison confirmed yesterday the club was scheduled to host its first home game against Kyabram on April 28, after months of indifference about if and when the ground would be playable.

In November the township was placed on stage four water restrictions, prompting discussion that the club could be forced to transfer the first half of its home matches, as the reserve deteriorated to barren dirt.

The club's opening round clash against Euroa has already been switched to make it a Magpies home game.

"The ground has been scarified and seeds planted," Morrison said.

"We've had a bit of rain.

"And it's been pretty good with the cooler nights putting a bit of dew on the ground."

Morrison said tinges of green had begun to form during the past few days and that the ground would remain unused until round three to give it every opportunity to flourish.

Also a positive for the club is further news that more funding can be sought by Mansfield Shire Council to help explore drought relief initiatives.

On Friday the Victorian Government announced $4.7 million worth of funding for the Drought Relief for Community Sport and Recreation Program, available to every Victorian council on Stage 3, 3a or 4 water restrictions.

"I've requested the application to be sent to me directly," council community services manager Michael Walker said, wanting to act immediately to secure the $50 000 grant.

"We want to maintain a sustainable playing field, so we'd be looking for a site plan to develop drought resistant grasses on all our playing fields and analysis on sprinkler heads to see if they're effective.

"This will go hand-in-hand with funding for a sustainable water supply, a bore and water tank."

Walker said he was hopeful of securing the additional funding by the end of next month.

United again: Duane Hueston is returning to Shepparton United this season.

March 29 2007
Shepparton News

Shepparton United has received a shot in the arm on the eve of the Goulburn Valley Football League season with the return of highflying forward Duane Hueston.

The 26-year-old comes back into the fold of his original club after two seasons with Murray Football League powerhouse Echuca United.

A three-time United leading goalkicker and player in the Demons' 1999 and 2000 grand finals, Hueston boasts interleague guernseys in the Goulburn Valley and Murray leagues, and enjoyed stints in the VFL with Bendigo Diggers and Box Hill Hawks.

"It's great to be back at the club, it's where I've played most of my footy and the place is definitely heading in the right direction," Hueston said.

"It was a tough decision because Echuca United have been good to me and I've learned a lot about footy in my two years there, but there was a great opportunity to come back home and play alongside guys like Justin Davies and Matt Forys which is too good to pass up.

"It's my club and my family has been around the club all of their lives too, so it was only natural that I would eventually come back."

Hueston - whose parents Alan and Pamela are life members of United - booted 48 goals in 2001 and 2002 and kicked 52 in 2004 before joining the Murray league Eagles in 2005.

He was a key member of the Echuca United team which made last year's grand final against Nathalia.

United coach Brad Hazelman said Hueston's recruitment would send a further positive vibe through the club in the lead-up to its first round clash with Benalla on April 14.

"He obviously brings a lot of talent, but also a lot of leadership and experience and that's going to be great for our relatively young side," Hazelman said.

"Huey is a great clubman, his family is a great United family and it's great to see guys like him and Justin Davies coming back to the club where they started."

Hueston's signing tops off a busy off-season for the Demons in the recruiting stakes including Rosebud duo Andrew Foster and Ben Black, former Tatura player Michael Woods and Shepparton East young gun Joe Perkovic.

Hueston is expected to line up for United in its final practice match against Rochester at Rochester on Saturday.

Actually Rochy lost by 1 point to Wang yesterday - Heath Aitken slight soreness in the hammy and didn't return after half time, Watson and Sheeners didn't play and Whitshead (spelling) played very well at CHB. Lobb had a very quite game as mentioned.

Rochy V Wang Rovers-

Shouldn't bother commenting.. obviously didnt attend the game? if i'm wrong then you should be ashamed of yourself! Rochy by 20-30 points as Tav (who i'm guessing heard from steve;) ) said. On a more plesent note, new recruits. Lobby was quiet but is carrying a groin injury, looks great at training with his goal kicking and marking power, smart player too believe it or not. Ben Anderson was very impressive and is alittle unfit so good things to come as the season goes on. Nick Knight was great, ran the ball well, skills were silky as always and was confident. Last recruit Carl Moon also played, did his job! ran the ball out of the back line as a bonus and looked comfortable with the switch from the KDFL to real football.

Symes battles for peak fitness
By Christie Peucker

March 30 2007
Shepparton News

Gun full-forward Ricky Symes will be a glaring omission for Benalla's round one clash against Shepparton United on April 14 as he continues to struggle with a recurrent knee injury.

Symes has not played competitive senior football for the Saints since round one of the last year's Goulburn Valley Football League season, after suffering some minor discomfort to his knee and electing to clean out the injured joint with surgery.

While the operation was considered innocuous at the time, scar tissue formed, restricting the movement in his leg and Symes later suffered a golden staph infection.

Speaking to The News yesterday, Symes said he was hopeful of returning a month into the season.

"I'm still struggling a little bit," Symes said.

"I will be right at some stage, but not for round one."

Given the all clear by doctors at Christmas, Symes ' recovery was on track until about a month ago when he pulled up sore after a training session.

"It was the best I'd trained since I did it, but I've struggled to get back," he said.

"I don't know if I did too much too early.

"We knew it wasn't going to be smooth sailing, but it's frustrating because it's so up in the air."

The big-kicking Saint said the many inspections of his knee during the past 12 months had done damage to his bone and cartilage and he was now also having trouble under his knee cap.

On a more positive note, Symes said the club was on target for another successful season under new coach Brenton Cooper.

"He's been excellent," Symes said.

"There is a lot more structure to us.

"In the past we've probably gone out and banked on our natural ability, where as now we have a lot better understanding of want we want to do."

Benalla will play practice matches against Mulwala and Seaford in the lead-up to its opening game against Shepparton United.

Which players at which clubs are capable of kicking 100 goals + this season ? Saad Saad will be a big chance and it would be good to see Ricky Joyce back out on the paddock kicking a few, not just for Benalla's sake but for the good of the comp. Who else is there ?

Might just go in to bat for a couple of mates here.

Skillz,You try putting together an entire magazine almost single-handedly which involves five leagues. I think its great that the Shepp News even bother. (PS well done FACTA, aka Flat Track Bully, on another good quality magazine.)

Yes they get paid to do it. but not very well .. I know .. i worked there.

As much as people around the GV whinge about the content of the Shepp News, the fact is people are spoilt with the coverage they get.

Admittedly the standard of sports journalism has slipped over the past year or two, but prepare for a turn-around to what it was before.

Wes Cusworth has headed to WIN TV and Rob Harris is taking over as sport editor.

And lets be honest, if there was ever a bloke who could single handedly turn things around its him.

Can't wait to get back to Shepp next week, pick up a copy of the news and read about the local footy!! (and to see Rob Harris as the by-line of the back page.)

The Shepp News' GV coverage has been ordinary for a while. Years ago, they used to send someone to every game and include a big write-up. Now, they pretty much only take photographs at the Shepp. grounds. Every game gets a pissy 100 word write-up, with hardly any quotes from coaches, player ets. The just mentioned the better players.

Well said bradrowe. Your comments about the coverage years ago are spot on. It's hard to believe it's gone backwards and it's not a patch on what it was 7-15 years ago. Hopefully those with influence can take a look at what the coverage used to be like in some back-issues (eg. mid 90's) and get it back to something like that.

True you used to have the 3,2,1 in there from each game from a reporter who had been to the game and also the write ups. Who was there, Noel Hussey, Don Kilgour, Les Cranage, Bill Ludlow (names maybe a little off, been a while) etc, now that was coverage. Must say though still not bad and obviously the paper hasnt got that manpower anymore.

Tongala v Kyabram results

3rds Kyabram u/18s beat Tongala U/17s by about 10pts.
Excellent effort by the younger Tonny boys.
2nds Tongala defeated Kyabram by 10pts first time since 1999.
P.S. after Kyabram asked could the game be played as 16 a side which was agreed, they played the last half with 18 until being caught out with 10mins to go in last quarter when Tongala put a couple of extra players on. Still couldnt get over the line and weak as piss on Kyabram's behalf especially when Tongala had players on the bench who could have been getting a run.
1sts Kyabram defeated Tongala by 6 goals. 16 goals to 10.
Newman probably kicked close to 10, some good young blokes with a lot of pace showed glimpses for them, Ryan Butler, Ryan Emmett, Dave Hansford(playing at Stanhope though I believe) Josh Finn all got a fair bit of it, not sure who they had out, Dave Newman didnt play. Tongala started well 4 goals to 1 in 1st 1/4, but lost Michael Roberts to a burst blood vessel in the 2nd 1/4 and had only the 18 left after half time. Mark and Andrew Reid were the two main players to miss the game for Tongala.
Good solid hitout for both sides.

Rochy got up over Shepp United by 1 point. Dying seconds Williams marked and goaled. Bowen kicked 7 or 8 and Scotty Hann had a great game in the middle.

Rochy were up by about 4 goals at half time and then started rotating/resting a few seniors. Rochy had about 9 out of the ones and heard United had quite a few missing also, so don't take too much away from the result. United are pretty well drilled and looked sharp up forward.

Rochy thirds got belted by united - would guess 10 goals

Good points, but don't forget Seymour has lost 4 big guys in Pilling, Gordon, Douglas and Bailey and replaced only with some fella named Kelly who is only going to play seniors because they are desperate for height. Echuca are the real dark horse I reckon. I haven't heard anything about them at all, except they lost Josh Maddox and former Bendigo Pioneers player Casey Nance is trying to get transfered to Croydon.

Last year they got Stephen White and a few others, but I don't think they have signed any big names this year.

Think you'll find guys that those days are long gone, and the budget restraints at joints like the Shepp News no longer allow for such a full-on coverage. Although there would be former writers or even semi-retired guys who'd be genuinely keen in being involved, going to games etc say for a bit of fuel and a seasons entry pass which is the way i think it used to work at times. That way wages wouldnt be an issue and the media mobs could write it off thur tax perhaps???

Throw in every other sport, and their indiviudal lobbying to get their sport decent coverage, and remember space is at a premium when most publications run at well over 50-65% advertising content.

Agree local papers can be great - many due to clubs contributing write-ups, details etc as in many instances 1-2 people have to write the entire paper.

Lets be honest the $$$ on offer for sports journalism aint good enough at times for the hours (weekend work) expected to do the job justice. Im sure the editors would be on a fair wicket, but your standard journo is extemely underpaid IMO.

Lets hope so because EDFL Div2 would be waste of his time, especially the way Maribyrnong Park have shopped. I know they lost the 2006 GF but really you only have to win it by a point to be premiers - and with the current list I cant see a side getting within 20 goals of them in 2007.

Heard the same about Mark - my money is on him returning to Kings Park. Why in the hell he would head to EDFL division 2 is beyond me anyway, a poor standard of football and home to a number of head hunting/ physical types.

Think that the Lions will be there abouts again to be honest.

Poor effort by Ky in the practice game. They are the first mob always crying poor or everything is against them and then to do that just sums them up - p..sweak!!

Numbers have been truly pleasing with 35 our worst roll up since Xmas. Confident we have added the 50-70 goals I think they need to push for finals, and with a couple of experienced heads thru the middle fingers crossed a finals spot may be a nice little reward after a few seasons of missing September action.

Doona, ive been training at Marby since xmas with a few of the Red Hill boys and im fairly certain Pilling will be staying at Marby, he has been taking training in some sort of an assistance role.

Circulation for a start, say 8,000 - 10,000 at a guess compared to close to 1,000,000 herald suns sold. Advertising rates in the herald-sun are phenonimal compared to the bush also - and printing costs become minimal once your press is up and running 1,000,000 copies to say 10,000 copies.

Just a few factors, but Im sure Rob has jotted down peoples thoughts and will set about making improvements. Are there any new sports journo's joining the team, is Richie Goodbody still remaining O/S for 2007?

The great BLADE (Goodbody) is playing footy in Canada this season and won't be back till about Sept or Oct at the earliest.

Yeah I would doubt any club in B grade would get within 10-15 goals of them this year, would certanly push finals in A grade. I think they got rolled by about 3 goals againts Shepp Utd without probably 5-6 senior blokes (as Utd would be without a few as well). They played Donvale yesterday, would be interested to see how they went.

The great BLADE (Goodbody) is playing footy in Canada this season and won't be back till about Sept or Oct at the earliest.

He's working for a paper over there.

Once he does return I doubt he'll return to the GV .. his liver couldn't handle it!!!

I have heard they're interviewing for another sports journo at the moment.

Can I suggest Doona or Footyboss as possible candidates.Seen an old article the other day that was written by Mark Stevens when he was at the News. Would he and Hussey be 2 of the last specialist footy men the news has had?

I don't think anyone at the news is ever a specialist at any sport.

You need to be able to write a bit of everything.

Stevens obviously knows his stuff and went on to big things, but there are people there (one anyway) who can write football as good as anyone.
