Just curious as to what people's opinions are toward the Ottens trade deal. We ended up with picks 12 and 16, instead of taking Moloney. Should we have taken him instead of picks 12 and 16??

moloney was swapped to melb for pick 12 which we used on meyer. we will really only be able to answer that question when we know how good meyer is going to be, so not for a few years. early signs are promising though and as it stands i for one am pretty happy.

From what i have seen of Meyer he certainly seems to have the goods.

Academic. The trade was about two things, getting draft picks and saving money.

Out - Ottens ($500k)
In - Meyer ($50k) and Pattison ($50k)
Saving - $400k

or

Out - Ottens ($500k)
In - Moloney ($250k)
Saving - $250k

We were offered a number of player + pick deals from Geelong and turned them all down because we have to get our footy department down due to losing money and our debt.

Also Moloney is exactly what Melbourne needed (they had no big bodied hard-ball get types.) Richmond already have Coughlan and Johnson in that position so getting him would have probably been overkill for us.

I'm happy with what we got out of the trade. Time will tell regarding Meyer, I say give the kid a chance.

Whats even better is the Big Donut returned to his ordinary form tonight.
Shame it wasnt last week but it still has made me feel better.

moloney certainly would have made us look like a better side this year. We're building for 3-5 years down the track however.

So the question becomes: Is Moloney better than Meyer *AND* the extra $'s is would have taken to keep him?

From what i have seen of Meyer i dont think this will be an issue.Ok at this stage they are totally different type of players but im more than confident that Meyer wont dissapoint.
The question should be asked of the pies why didnt they chase Maloney?

Last thing they needed. They have about 10 players like that. They have cornered the market on slow midfielders. It is finding someone who can get above walking pace that is their problem.

He can play that kid, but we done the right thing. 5 picks top 20 is unheard of.

Probably the only thing I'll disagree with you on this year, Weaver. Even if Cogs and Johnno happen to remain fit (neither an absolute given!), the presence of a third hard-nut midfielder rotating through the guts could never be too many for the Tigers.

It's certainly not as if we've been a production line for that type in recent times ...

Yeah, I probably should have said something like, considering the 800 things wrong with us that have to be fixed there were higher priorities. We can get buy with Johnson, Coughlan, Hyde, Chaffey, Tuck ... not be good but get by.

Moloney is looking pretty solid at the moment, he'd be handy in a yellow & black guernsey but hopefully Meyer will produce the goods in the future...
