Premier League - Round 3
Lauderdale v Glenorchy
This game has been transferred to Bellerive Oval and will be played as the curtain raiser to the Devils game on Sunday at 10.30am. This game will see exactly where the Bombers are at with Glenorchy showing mixed form in the first two weeks of the season. The Pies were totally out played last week and will want to turn that result around. The Bombers showed character against Hobart coming from behind to register a fighting victory. The wide open spaces of Bellerive Oval will test the leg speed of both teams and the delivery of the ball into the forward zone will be critical. The game will be important for Glenorchy as their young side must show character to bounce back from last weeks defeat. The opportunity to play in front of a large crowd will ensure that all players will put in their best effort.
Hobart Lions v Clarence
Hobart meets Clarence after the Roos have come off an impressive win last week. The Roos had the advantage of injecting a number of players that are part of the Mariners squad into last week’s side and the increase in intensity was clearly evident. Hobart showed also that their policy of promoting youth also is working for them when they put on a polished display against Lauderdale. This game even this early in the season is a crunch game for the Lions as they need to keep in touch with the top five. Clarence’s seemingly bottomless well of talented and gifted players will continue to keep them in good stead for the entire season. Hobart will know exactly where they are at the end of this game.
New Norfolk v North Hobart
The Eagles sit at the top end of the ladder sharing the top spot with North Hobart. This will be the Demons first real test this season as they paly one of last years finalists. If you want obtain a measure of how your team is travelling, a game on the wide open expenses of Boyer Oval will soon show you. The Eagles forward set up has many of the opposition coaches scratching their heads in trying to match up the many avenues that the Eagles have. Heading the list is Michael Thompson who has started the year in a blaze of glory kick starting the Eagles campaign. Add to this a strong and determined midfield led by Brock Ackerley and Roger Belcher the Eagles should start the game favourites. North Hobart’s seemingly effortless win last week will be put into perspective after this week’s game.
Kingborough v Brighton
Brighton will travel to Kingborough in the hope of continuing to try and improve their performance each week. Kingborough on the other hand put up a creditable performance against the Eagles only going down by three goals. Kingborough will want to put a boost to their percentage to ensure that they do not lose touch with the top three. To Brighton’s credit they did not give up at any stage even though the opposition ran over the top of them. The small ground will suit Kingborough's tall timber up forward after having to run around on the leagues two biggest grounds in the first two weeks of the season.
Regional League - Round 4
Dodges Ferry v Lindisfarne
The Two Blues deserve to start this game as favourites as they have carried all before them this season. Three wins sees them at the top of the ladder holding down second spot. The rest of the season should promise a place in the finals for the Blues, something that has not happened for a number of years. The sharks once again went oh so close to knocking over Cygnet but failed at the last hurdle. Both teams play an efficient brand of football with Dodges relying on the quick movement of the ball into the forward zone where they have a number of options up forward. The Blues rely on their tall timber to provide the marking targets in the forward zone with crumbers underneath to clean up. An even tussle should prove the highlight of the round.
Huonville v Cygnet
A traditional clash of neighbours that will have an extra tang to it with the improved performance of Huonville this season. Both teams have had an excellent start to the season with Cygnet undefeated and Huonville only going down by a small margin last week. The Lions will want to measure the improvement this season with a strong showing against the Port. The difference in this years Lions to last years is the direct brand of football that they are playing. Michael McGregor at full forward has straightened up the Lions resulting in the team converting more of their opportunities this year. Cygnet will test the young players that McGregor has promoted this season with a mix of experience and knowledge. Every time these two sides meet the contest is willing, this should be no different.
Claremont v Kermandie
The Robins travel to Claremont with only one thought on their mind, the need to win this game. Kermandie have had a horror start to the season with injuries to key players and the lack of cohesion in their play. This game will be a crunch game for Kermandie as a loss here will make it very difficult for them to play finals this season. The Magpies will be a dangerous proposition at home where they definitely play better football. If the Pies get a sniff of victory they will be very difficult to overcome.
Sorell v Channel
Both clubs registered their first win for the season and will be looking to make it two in a row. Sorell would be very happy to have come away with a win against Kermandie last week, especially when the win was at Kermandies’s home ground. Channel also got on the board with a solid display against Claremont. Sorell will have the opportunity to put pressure on a Channel side that has yet to show their full potential. Sorell have had a slow start to the season but are starting to get some key players back into their side and will slowly improve. Channel are an unknown entity at the moment where on paper they could be anything but are yet to show this on the ground. The winner here will put pressure on those above and the loser will find pressure from within.
