of the current guys it would be dean wallis, michael long and possibly damian hardwick
in recent history i guess thompson, the danihers, watson, vander, harvey would all fit the bill
and all time coleman, clarke, reynolds, hutchinson are names that always get mentioned at the club

Terry Daniher of recent times, currently Hirdy would have to go close, let's face it we all love him.
For all time, you can't go past John Coleman. I would give anything to be able to travel back in time and see him play.

steady on Dave - I'm only 32!
Forgot about Long. He'd definitely run it close.

should we dismiss the greats that wore the red and black with so much passion such as the doc
Seriously,
D ick Reynolds is clearly Essendon's favourite son.
A close second would be John Coleman.
And, if you go right back to the early part of the century, Albert Thurgood was regarded as Essendon's greatest ever player. It is only the fact that he played so long ago the dulls the greatness of him nowadays.

Nuh,it`s too hard.I have a story about King Richard.I was standing under his stand the day Simon Madden broke his games record for the club. The King walked by and i asked him for his autograph, all i had for him to sign was a $50.00 dollar note,he duly signed and walked off with the 50,laughing his head off....i just stood there, not wanting to cause a scene with an Essendon icon, when he came smiling back...."Had you there, didn`t I mate"....sensational work from The King.
....we belted norf that day

Fantastic story Johnny, $50 is some serious drinking money. :D I would have let him keep it.
A few months back, I was at the Essendon trainers auction, and Timmy Watson and TD were there. They went around the audience and people could ask a question to John Quinn, or Timmy or TD. TD had the mike and as he was walking past I said, I had question for him. So I asked, "Why couldn't you have hit Gavin Brown any harder?" and he said "Erggh I would have killed the prick" To which my whole table pissed themselves. Very honest and down to earth guy, as is Jason Johnson.

Though seriously, has anyone mentioned Hutchinson? I thought he would've gone close!
Mark Harvey, Simon Madden, Terry Daniher.

I'm amazed that 2 of you, both of whose opinions I respect, have nominated harvey.
A fantastic player, and a respected and loved bloke, but not in the class of Coleman, Reynolds, Hutchison, Daniher, Watson and Hird as a player, at least from an outsider's perspective.
Am I wrong, was he that good? Or doesn't he need to be an out-and-out champion to be the favourite son?

Fat Red...when picking my 'favourite son'...i'm talking about in MY lifetime!! I never saw Coleman, Hutchy, Reynolds...but i'm not saying that Harvey is the sole Essendon favourite son in my eyes.
I started following Essendon as a 5 year old in 1983.
If you had to pick one Essendon favourite son...King ***** would certainly be it!
It has to be either Coleman or Reynolds.
I cant see anybody else getting a bigger ovation if they were to do a lap of honour today at an Essendon game.
Altho I never saw either play, from people I talk to who have, Coleman seems to be the one who has captured their imaginations more than any other bomber. Probably more than any other player!
I mean stories of the crowd switching ends at breaks to be closer to young Johnny are unbeleivable!
Im not suggesting Reynolds didnt have his fans, but to me, I get the impression Coleman is our favouritist son!!
