View Full Version : Bombers v Hawks....Finals Memories...."The Good Ol' Days"
Essendon v Hawthorn in a final, just like the good ol' days of the '80's. Our great finals clashes of the early/mid '80's are my favorite footy memories. Two great, tough teams who enjoyed belting the suitcase outta eachother. Merrett, Duckworth, Neagle v Matthews, Brereton, Dipper....maaagnificent.
The humiliation of 1983 when belted by a then record margin in a GF by the Hawks was the catalyst of the the fiercest rivalry of the decade.
The 1984 Second Semi Final...despite losing...remains the greatest game of football i've attended. Hawks get the early jump, Bombers reel 'em in and the match turns into an armwrestle. Hawks show a little more poise in the dying, pressure packed minutes to score an 8 point win. We lost, but we knew we could mix it with 'em and i remember feeling very confident we'd get 'em if we got over the 'Pies the following week.
1984 Grand Final....'nuff said really. Although i still think that as good as Billy was, Leon Baker shoulda won the "Norm" .
After belting the Hawks at every turn in 1985. This team....is the greatest Essendon team i have seen....i still believe that (only if we back up this year will i start to compare them to the current side).
Essendon v Hawthorn in September, i feel like a kid again and i'm sure my fellow "old timers" feel the same. Can't wait for next Saturday. Bring it on Hawkers.....Carn the Dons!
where's wally?
Spot on re Baker Wally, without him we were gorne.
Those games (well apart from '83!) still burn brightly in the old memory banks, along with one game in '86 at Windy Hill when we absolutely belted the living tar out of them.
The low point would have been the flogging we copped in '92, didn't I hear about that for weeks from my in-laws!
Should be an interesting week.
Ahhh the 1984 Grand Final, still my greatest memory as a football supporter.
The crowd was wall-to-wall Essendon- and the reaction when Backer put the Dons in front- pure ecstacy!!
Unfortunately, it is an atmosphere that has been sadly lacking in recent grand finals.

15 and in the cheer squad that day - jumping up and down on the old wooden slate seat/ benchs at the G' on the old Southern wing (pre- Great S Stand) - we jumped so hard and so excitedly for such a prolongued period durign that final quarter we broke about 2-3 of these slats! Fantastic stuff. Never had a better day in my life (well one or two... erm... run it pretty close but thats another story)...
Hey Dutch, you must have been just in front of me then. Remember the yobbo's who spent all day singing (and I mean all day) including the best rip off of Carlton's theme song during the ressies? They were good value!

Yeah, because there's only about 10% of people at the Grand Final these days who actually give a toss about the game.
As for the Hawks rivalry - they were my favourite years of footy too. How could they not be if you're a Bombers supporter!? :D
I missed the 84 GF, but was able to go in 85. It's a shame really - both of the Grand Finals i've been to (1985 & 2000) have been crap, boring games! Is it too much to ask to see us win a Grand Final against Carlton by a point with a kick after the siren.....?
Oh well......not this year. HAHAHAHAHAHA.
It will be a weird thing, watching Essendon Vs Hawthorn in a final once again. As you said Wally - "the good old days." :)

Would you rather be the second best team of the 80s and the 90s (i.e the best overall, when both decades are counted together) OR would you rather dominate one decade and then do jack sh*t in the other?

Onya Davey Boy - I hear what you're saying - the footy's great but those distractions are fairly choice!
Yeah, I did lose the plot there for a while but after meeting my lovely lady wife I rediscovered my focus ;)

Whatever do you mean Dan? One flag EACH in the nighties thanks very much! :p Or did you forget 91?
Windy, no light beer, your confusing me with Buzz! :D Btw you heading to the Royal before the game? I will look for the 'scarf'.
Cheers.
yes, 1 flag in each of the 90s.
But two very different decades.
Essendon made two Grand Finals, lost two preliminary finals by a point, and made the finals 7 times in the decade. The Bombers won 7 finals matches in the decade.
Hawthorn made one Grand Final, made the finals, 6 times (mostly losing elimination finals) and only won 3 finals - all in 1991. Not much happened after '91, you'd have to say.
