Not to many positives to come out of the Bendigo game yesterday.
Nash, Slattery and Hunt didn't play due to injury, so that rules those three out. Hille and Alvey were our best two, Wilson was very good but went off with an injury. Angus was fairly solid. Put a line through Reynolds, Richards...both were very average.
In - Hille, Alvey, Monfries, Watson
Out - Henneman, Bradley, Murphy, Thomas
Hille is a given. He was impressive yesterday without being outstanding. I don't think there was much in his report, however if he goes then Allan should come in.
Alvey has been playing solid football in the two's. I know everyone wants to see the kids get a run, but Alvey deserves a go. Must reward good form. He replaces Murphy in the wing/HF role. It would be interesting to see exactly what he can give us if he plays a full game on the ground.
Thomas works hard, he was solid on Sat night, but he just doesn't do it for me. Made a few mistakes and his first option is always to handball. Monfries works equally as hard, has all the courage in the world and is a class above Thomas.
I don't know whether to make anything of Watson's injury, I think it was more of a team balance thing. He would have been extremely handy in the last quarter when our blokes couldn't get near the footy.

FFS you are really starting to p*** me off with your constant bagging of Thomas! He went ok on the weekend and you haven't included Bullen or Bolton in your outs who had ordinary games. Lay off him and give him a chance.

To be honest, I forgot Bullen, but I'd still play Dyson above him.
Thomas and Bolton aren't in competition for spots.
Bolton has had the better of Pavlich in the past and with Bradley more than likely to miss we may need Bolton to go back and play on Pavlich at some stage. As scary as that sounds, its fact. Paul Thomas isn't going to play on Matthew Pavlich, Bolton can.
Paul Thomas was certainly better than his first time around. But everything I said above was true. He was handball happy and made a few costly errors that in the end cost us a couple of goals. Sure, he wasn't the only one but when you lose a game by six points it all adds up.
Monfries and Alvey have had fantastic VFL form and deserve their position in the team. Someone has to make way and for me it is Thomas.
You could make reasons for other blokes to go. Bullen, Winderlich, Stanton, Bolton etc. But for me it is what they bring to the side.
You and your SA buddies keep telling me Thomas has great commitment, work ethic and is hard at it. That's great, but we have plenty of those types, Jason Johnson, McVeigh, Mark Johnson etc.
Mark Bolton can play tall or small, run all day and play on a bloke like Pavlich. That being said, if Bradley was fit, I'd have him gone.
Winderlich adds the pace we need, he needs game time to see whether or not he is up to it. At the moment he has show glimpses of it, but we need Jason Winderlich to be a player more than we need Paul Thomas.
If our team is -
Zantuck Fletcher Welsh
McPhee Bolton Lovett-Murray
Lovett J.Johnson Stanton
Alvey Lucas Rioli
McVeigh Lloyd Laycock
Hille Peverill M.Johnson
Monfries, Dyson, Winderlich, Watson
Tell me who's spot Paul Thomas will take and what he is going to bring to the team above and beyond the player he replaces.

Bullen isn't in that side and he was the one I had a problem with being in the side ahead of Thomas. But Alvey has had many chances and never performs in the big league. Monfries should be there and be left there for a few weeks at least. I am a big fan of him.

And with Bullen out, I'd still play Dyson ahead of Thomas (as I explained above).
Alvey has performed in the big league, just not in the red and black.
He has averaged upwards of 26 disposals in the VFL over the past 4 games and kicked goals as well.
Like I has said in the past, I wish Paul Thomas all the best and would love for him to make it. However I just don't see what he brings to the team ahead of a few of the others.
The only merit in playing Thomas (IMO) would be to play him on Farmer and release McVeigh or Mark Johnson. But the way Betts gave Thomas the run around in the WC for the short time he was on him I don't have the confidence in him to do it.
No-one's rating Solomon a chance to return? Obviously i don't follow your team very closely but isn't he suppose to return from injury this week.

Thomas stays in. He did enough and you have to give the new players some reward.
In : Hille, Dyson, Watson, Monfries
Out : Henneman, Winderlich, Bradley, Bullen
Henno has been trying hard but if Hille's fit, he must come in.
Winderlich has had his chances. He had 2 kicks on Sat night (both resulted in turnovers) and he spent enough time on the ground to do more. I don't think he's up to the pace of AFL footy. Maybe he needs another off season in the weight room. But at the moment he's not good enough and to be frank, has never shown he's good enough.
Watson for Bradley. Straight swap basically. If Jobe's not fit, then we are in trouble. I guess they'll give Richards another go. Either way, one of these two will probably get the job on Pavlich and Watson may be better suited.
Monfries for Bullen. Purely due to the Swans curse. They tend to tire teams out the next week so need fresh legs in the mid-field.
PS : If Solomon is fit, then he returns in place of Watson/Richards.

Assuming McPharlin doesn't go back to cover one of Lloyd, Lucas, Watson or Laycock.
Fletcher wil play at Full-Back.
Zantuck and Bolton the options for Pavlich.
McVeigh, Welsh to take the Farmer, Medhurst combination.

We all sit here and talk junk about who should be dropped and then the coaching stuff turn around and drop, promote or leave in the wrong damn people each and every week.
Then the next week we come back and do it all again after bitching and moaning about the selection committee.

It's a football discussion board.
We are discussing football.
and here I thought this was the kitchen utensil board hehe
I think Alvey should be rewarded for his form. I haven't been his biggest fan but I'd have him take Murphy's role in a flash. Uses it with polish and would have more desire and guts than Murph.
Like you Longy I would be very surprised if Hille went for that incident, just a marking contest imo. So out Henno.
Watson is a tough one. I was thinking he needed just one more game of VFL to be ready for senior football but now he's missed a week. Form and ability say yes though. so in for the likely injured Bradley.
I'd probably leave it for that at the minute.
Bullen and Bolton only a game away from dismissal, mainly surviving because of the number of injuries that have hit in the past couple of weeks. And Bolton because he's likely to take Pavlich - though I'd prefer if that was a midfield match up like in previous games - Bolton in defence does tend to worry me.

Thats what worries me, bolts has done well on pav but pav was a midfielder. Playing at CHF will give bolts nightmares. He isnt one for body contact and i reckon pav might be a bit quick for him on a lead too. Still we dont have much choice as the options are thin.
Id be happy with the team Longy picked.

In: Hille (if not suspended by VFL tribunal), Allan, Monfries, Watson.
Out: Henno, Bolts, Murphy, Winderlich.
Won't be much in the way of changes.
With Bradley injured, the dropped ones for me would be Murphy and Bullen.
I'll suggest that with Bradley out, Henneman will take CHB post on Pavlich and then Bolton would be free to continue to play on the wing.
Watson, Allan and Alvey are the inclusions.
Side:
B: Welsh, Fletcher, Zantuck

With Fletcher having to take McPharlin i think we'll have to play McPhee on Pavlich. Solomon might have been a good option if he was fit.
From a fremantle perspective McPhee would be your best matchup for Pavlich. Slightly small but Pavlich doesn't usually use size as an advantage. Its his speed and endurance that are hard to match. It'll be interesting to see if Pavlich can cope with a slightly smaller defender that can run with him.
But making the move would also negate a lot of your rebound from the half backline. A question sheedy will be pondering all week.
With Fletcher having to take McPharlin i think we'll have to play McPhee on Pavlich. Solomon might have been a good option if he was fit.
They often send their back-up ruck down forward as well (either Johnson or Sandilands or Longmuir).
Where would that leave us?

Think that Thomas deserves another crack certainly ahead of guys like Winderlich (dont think he knows what the Sherrin looks like) and Alvey i sure as hell dont want him back in the side. Would rather play someone like Watson or Dyson.
The Pavlich match up certainly looks to be the tough one as weve usually done very well against their smaller forwards with Welsh taking Farmer and Mcveigh on Medhurst, my bet is if Welsh and Mcviegh can keep those 2 to around 4 goals between them then well win the game.
Think Bolton should get first crack at Pavlich, if he looks to be getting on top early then we need to make the change to Mcphee before things get out of hand, id just prefer Mcphee to roam and play on someone else if possible.

I don't think they can afford to play McPharlin forward against us.
If they do then it will mean Grover will have to go to one of Lloyd or Lucas.
With Laycock/Hille and Watson as other forward options, I can't see how McPharlin could play forward.
That being said, if he does play forward then Fletcher, Zantuck and Bolton as the options down back and of course Lucas. I hear Kepler is still a chance of playing.

Agreed. Give the new ones a decent chance, instead of being in and out all the time. Realistically, it's not like we are going for a flag so we need to give players a go to see where they are at for future planning. Look what being in and out week after week has done to Richards career.

I'm thinking that McPharlin will go back to CHB to get Lucas, but if CC holds his nerve and attacks rather than has a defensive mind, he has defensive options.
Haddrill, Parker and Thornton would raffle the CHB and FB positions depending on match ups. Parker is likely to go to Lloyd and Thornton may go to Lucas.
Could Lucas go down back?.

Mcpharlin might not be needed in the backline. Fremantle's new plan is all about supply. Win the ball and deliver it into the forward line.
Shoot out. eg. Dees first, then kick a bag full against pies.
Like most games this will be won by the midfield. Get it in quick and you beat the flood. We have the cattle, pulling it off three weeks in a row is the test.
Our backline has been pretty tight. We have a player called Siegert been around a few years slips under the opposition radar. He could easily account for Lucas or Lloyd. Not mention grover, parker, haddril or thornton. and a guy named Johnson who will become a kpp foward/back.
Your trump looks like lovett-murray. Playing as a midfielder he delivers nicely and can get the ball. If Walker doesnt play this week we will have to give him to J. Carr.

Neither Melbourne or Collingwood had the ability to stack their forward line with taller forwards.
We could very easily play Lloyd, Lucas, Watson, Laycock/Hille down there. As we have at stages this season (swap Watson for Hird).
I know your backline has been in great form, but I don't think it has been tested to a large degree in the last couple of weeks. Our forward line is by no means in great form. Lucas has been outstanding, as has Laycock in the time he has spent forward. Lovett is a livewire and with Thomas likely to stay in the side, McVeigh will probably stay forward as well. On paper it looks very dangerous with four genuine marking options and two very good small forwards.
And I think your confusing Lovett-Murray with Lovett.
Lovett-Murray is another candidate to play on Pavlich, pace and leap and would free up McPhee to play his natural role. Would be a bit of a worry, but he has performed well there in the VFL and was good against Sydney.
Laycock Lloyd McVeigh
Parker Haddrill Grover
Watson Lucas Lovett
Thornton Siegert Walker
Looks a good battle.

I'd love to see him back there, though.
It'd mean that Freo have gone defensive, and are trying to save the match rather than win it.
I think they'd just go with poor matchups in the back half, play the ruckman back, and hope to outshoot us.
McPharlin on Dustbin will get the crowds through the gate.
If both teams attack from the first bounce (rather than go defensive), it will be a great game.
Johnson on J. Carr will be interesting, the term mongrel dog's comes to mind.

We've never had the firepower to take the bombers on offensively in the past. The bombers have had the wood over us for some time now and I think it will end this week. I don't think Fremantle are going to be happy with a hard fought win this week, the attitude has changed, I can sense a revenge fired blasting coming on! If the bombers could make a game of it I think that would be a big win for the bombers this week with their young line up.
McPharlins not as good a kick as Lloyd, but he'll still kick a bag on whoever it is you match up on him this week. The guys got some talent and is a real danger!
Here's hoping you at least make a game of it! Good luck in your rebuilding!

Thommo has to stay in. FFS he has had two chances and uve written him off already....
You say his first option is to handball, which is clear in his stats atm, 5 kicks and 19 handballs in two games shows a handball happy player but last year he was the complete polar opposite. Ive gone back an re-looked over all my stats from last years SANFL and out of the guys who averaged over 20 disposals a game (him being one) he had the highest kick to handball ratio of the lot...which just shows his confidence is DOWN right now....and thus the room for improvement as his confidence grows is massive. He def has the attributes, fully developed body etc. Has to have more chances ahead of other who have been given them and havent shown much!! He gives drive out of defence and hardens it up that is his best attribute and he can only improve.

Sorry my mistake.
Last week against Sydney it appeared as though Lovett was given some lattiude to roam. Sheedy might be grooming a pacy midfielder. One of our guys will have to shut him down. Shoot out comming up I reckon.
As for Siegert playing on Lucas he could do a servicable job (to answer other posts) the amount of ground Lucas can cover during a game we will need a run-with player with a bit of beef. Thornton too light. leaves Siegert mabey doing a swap with Grover.

Id just rather see him find his confidence at VFL level and dominate down there for two or three weeks before he gets his chance. Its very hard for a young player to find form in the AFL.
There are blokes in the VFL at the moment who have been in our best players three or four weeks running. And I speak of Monfries and Alvey. I just believe they are more deserving of a spot than Thomas.

Cupes worked pretty hard defensively. Which was a definate improvement.
But like most of the side he battled through the day.
He got a little bit of the ball, but was without his usual flair. His foot skills were still way off what we expect from him. Didn't work hard enough to get position at times.
So he still has a way to go, but he is moving in the right direction.

It's just when Damian Cupido grabs the ball within 60m of goal you expect him to nail it.
His field kicking was really good...his goal kicking just didn't quite as spectacular as we have come to expect.
To me Cupido appears too bulky for his game style. He just doesnt look as agile to me as I have seen him, I dont think it is due to injuries either. Perhaps he could drop a few kilos. what do you's think?

I've been saying this too, I think he bulked up too much when he had his knee injury last season, before that he won all his footy with his pace, leading out to take a mark or turning his opponent inside out. Now he doesn't have the pace to get away from his opponent and he couldn't take a contested mark to save himself.
FREO POV..
If McPhee plays on Pavlich, you will have a problem, Pav is much stronger this year, can't see McPhee having the strength to go with him, your best bet is Bradley (if fit), otherwise...good luck.
Haven't seen much of Essendon this year, has McVeigh been playing backline, he always seems to do well on eitehr Medhurst or Farmer. Would love to see a Farmer v Zantuck dual....but I'm guessing Zantuck will be required to sit on a taller player, perhaps Webster or our resting ruckman.
In the papers in WA it listed Jason Johnson as a non trainer this week...will he play?...& what is the likelihood of Kepler playing?

I doubt McPhee would play on pavlich, we try to avoid playing Mcphee on a forward that the opposition will go through alot, we want McPhee coming across the Front/ back/over the top of that contest. If I was an opposition coach i would be telling whoever is McPhee opponent to stay as far away from pavlich as possible

Saying that then, I'm guessing a Headland v McPhee match may be on the cards....superb!! Both have pace, McPhee probably slightly ahead on the marking ability. I know McPhee had a great year in 2004, but I think Des is probably slightly ahead on this years efforts...should be a great match up.

McPhee started like a house on fire against Melbourne in Round 1. But in the very same game limped over the line in the second half. His form for the next few weeks was ordinary to patchy.
However he showed definate signs in the last couple of weeks that he was getting back to his best and last week he was the best player on the ground.
Also, not that I think McPhee will take Pavlich, but I do think you have under-estimated how strong Adam McPhee is.

Haven't seen Headland this year, Hopefully mcPhee has kick started his season with possibly his best performance in Red & Black last week. He also usually plays well against freo, hope he continues that this week.
P.s - I think McPhee is more that Slightly ahead on marking ability, if Headland beats him it wont be in the air.
