I'm unsure if anyone has bought this thread up before, more than likely they have, but here goes anyway.
Can anyone shed any light as to why this guy is popular??? This is an issue that has bothered me for a few years now.
He's not funny, does stupid voices and pulls faces for a laugh.
I've watched his show a few times and occasionally might accidentally flick over to it if there's nothing else on... but if I can avoid it, I will.
I saw once in a voxpop poll in the Herald-Sun a question "who do you prefer as a variety show host, Rove or Bert Newton?" Each of the 5 respondents answered Rove. I was completely at a loss as to why these people would choose Rove, given that Bert IMO is very funny, smart and witty.... and Rove IMO has none of these qualities.
I know, its mostly the 13-16 age group that find him funny, when he is not. Rove is extremely hated on these boards.
Yeah, I left the TV on after... the er, OC... last night. I couldn't see why anyone could find this guy funny. The whole spiel about immigration or whatever was just not funny on any level.

Clearly he pays the audience to laugh at his jokes. I must be missing something too.
What I really cringe about is how embarassing he can be to the guests on the show- overseas stars left speaking to him, what must they think of Australia?

I dont mind Rove or his show. I wont watch it religiously and cant remember the last time i actually sat down and watched all his show but its light entertainment. Its very rarely a hilarious show but i always get a few laughs off it. Keep in my i am 17 years old so i would be in that audience which his show attracts.

Its working too, you have to wake up, Rove's a knob.
I don't find him funny in the least and also at a loss as to how he keeps winning the gold logie - but hey, who takes the logies seriously anyway. Snoozer your right, I find Bert is actually funnier.
It just shows the state that aussie television is in atm I guess.

How people can have such a hatred for him when he has done nothing wrong besides trying to do a funny show for a particular audience, which by the logie is working is beyond me. If you dont like him, dont watch his shows.
No need to get angry.

He is ________ he attempts to be political yet dosen't know what his talking about! All interviews he does are mortifying never have i seen someone so terrible at interviewing someone in my hole life. It's incredibly predictable, he is a "try hard" which never do well in comedy mind you he isn't meant to be funny maybe amusing is the word for all those dim witted teenage drop kicks.

One of the worst offenders too is Corrine Grant.
I remember the only time I've ever paid attention to this show, was when he first appeared on channel 9.
Rove would make the most bland, unfunny and inane comment that was meant to be a joke....
and Corrine Grant would erupt in the loudest hysterics and you'd expect soon one of her internal organs would explode.
She seems to offer no more than laughter-on-queue, with the hope a mob mentality will see the audience follow her into laughter.
Rove, Will Anderson, a lot of the comedians that appeared on the Fat. seems to be this little Melbourne based sycophantic clique that have appoiinted themselves as the comedic representatives of Australia.
No wonder kids spend more money on computer games.

I dont really like Roves show but how you people can hate it so much is beyond me. Although i do not like Corrine Grant, i agree that she is just not funny. Peter Hellier though is awesome. I watch the show for him.
I used to not like Will Anderson but i dont mind him now.

The thing is that he is not funny, but there are people out there who think he is, when he's not. Also he is a ****************. He doesn't deserve a logie at all.

Peter Helliar and Wil Anderson are quite funny though, i agree with you there.

Does this hatred have anything to do with his position as Fremantle's number one ticket holder or whatever??? ;)
There's not a lot of good Australian stuff on TV these days and much of it is on the ABC which doesn't win any of the popular awards anyway. While I certainly don't think Rove Live is brilliant, surely it's better than a lot of the other crud that commercial channels dish up. And it IS a live night time variety show which Australian TV is sadly lacking.
And look at it this way. If Rove hadn't won the Gold Logie this year, you know who probably would have? Bec Cartright!!! Now that WOULD have been a farce.

They should give the logie to John Wood.

With the voting system as it is now he will never win the award he truely deserves.

Well, that shows how ********ed Australian TV is then, doesn't it?

I caught a bit of 'The Glass House' the other night and that's all she did.
Broke into hysterics at the drop of a hat.
But said nothing remotely funny all night long.
Barely said anything at all, come to think of it.

It's obvious that his show is for teens and not for asdults. IMO i find Rove quite funny... But hey, thats just me :)
I found it mildly funny when I was 17 too. You'll get over it.

Just goes to show how ordinary Aussie telly has become.
I think the bitterness about Rove comes from the fact that he has made himself successful even though he's unfunny and cringeworthy at times, and that there are thousands more funnier people getting around than him. (Lets not forget that Rove's primary title is comedian). I guess he's probably a better businessman than comedian.
Is society really that dull and misguided that this parasite is voted the most popular TV personality. It makes you wonder what type of people read TV week!!!
.... and for what it's worth, the only time I ever laughed at Rove was when his offices burnt down.

I think Rove's okay, but that's about it. He's not terribly funny. He is not a very good interviewer, and the show's variety format just doesn't quite work for me.
But watch the Rove '99 DVD and you'll probably be pleasntly surprised. Great sketches like Other People's Lives, Idiot Boxing video reviews and Cliche Tests. The live segments are much looser and funnier. Even listening to the audio commentary on the DVD you hear Peter Helliar saying that although he likes working on ROove Live, he would like to have seen the version of Rove they did at Channel 9 developed a bit more. Seemed to come across though that McManus and Channel Ten wanted to go for the variety format though.
I think if Rove Live went back and did more of his Channel 9 stuff the show could improve. Do we really need to sit through another awkward satellite interview with another disinterested mid range celeb?
That said, I can't think of a more hated TV personality who is supposedly popular. Before Rove, regular targets were Daryl Somers and Ray Martin. Rove's now a target, and newspaper columnists, tv critics and many others take great delight in putting him down. Some do make valid criticism, but I think there are quite a few who are just a little harsh.

hit the nail on the head kurt, it's a very tight jerk circle of masturbating clowns spraying their jizzum all over the air waves.
the most annoying thing about these drop kicks is how they use their soap box to make political commentary against our johnnie......and the public is supposed to pay attention to a bunch of uneducated, low rent, untalented nob heads who make a living as professional clowns.
the aussie show biz industry is a closed shop and you dont get a gig unless you fit in with the mindset.

This gets me furious too However im pritty annoyed that the Liberal party just let it happen! They really should sue Rove for Slander who gives a stuff what people think hell might even swing some voters. If not sue him maybe ruffle a few feathers! Someone has really got to put him in his place im sick to death of the little panzy prick, ******** of rove nobody likes you!

Rove is midly funny.
Very Random, just pulls faces and makes stupid voices that can be slightly amusing for a while. I usually watch Rove if there is nothing else on but i can see why a lot of people dont like him. However clearly many people do if he wont the Gold Logie.

Rove is doing two stand-up shows in Sydney - might even be this weekend.
$36 a ticket...I'm gonna put that money to good use at the SCG bar during Port v Sydney instead.
Seriously, who'd waste $36 on that 'talent?'

but the short arse isn't even original........he's doing a steve vizard and impersonating dave letterman......notice how he's always grabbing his chin and making weird noises.........he even says 'i dont even know what that means'.......just like dave, his catch phrase.
it also says a lot about the logies when the muppet who wins the gold logie doesn't even rate in the top 10 shows in oz.......fairdinkum, uppercuts all round.
