View Full Version : One of the Johnsons next

Lloydy has full forward against him even if the inner club whispers apparently go with him.

A captain needs to be some one who lifts on his own. Doesn't need an act from another team member.

Mark Johnson may have a history of the odd undisciplined moment on the ground. That aside I would be happy with him being the next skipper. He goes hard whatever the state of the game. Jason doesn't have any undisciplined history against him bar a recent off field Doctors party and is of the same ilk and value but doesn't lift spirits in quite the same way as his name sake.

Hird is far from dead but be happy with MJ next.

Edited fall to full with respect of Jarryd S. Not even a Freudian slip.

Mark Johnson is an Essendon captain in waiting. His want to win for the club stands out above other contenders. Lloyd suffers from having made his name at full forward.

As great as I think Mark Johnson is playing, every time I see him I think of Tarrant belting him. Id much prefer Lucas as captain. He is well spoken and good player right across the ground. He won't get it but I think he is every the player Lloyd is and more. Personally Id love them to make Fletch the captain for a year.

Mark Johnson seeks pay hike
By Stephen Rielly
August 19, 2005

Essendon's Mark Johnson is out of contract at season's end.

ESSENDON midfielder Mark Johnson has told the Bombers he wants a significant pay rise for a season in which he is expected to vie with Dustin Fletcher for the club's best-and-fairest award.

Johnson, a winner of the Crichton Medal in 2002, comes out of contract at the season's end and is believed to have asked for as much as $340,000 for next season, significantly more than Essendon has so far indicated it is prepared to pay.

Essendon was not commenting last night but Johnson's manager, Michael Quinlan, said that he had opened negotiations with the Dons but achieved little progress thus far.

"We've spoken with Essendon, but at this point it's fair to say that it might take some time to finalise a new deal," Quinlan said.

Johnson, 27, has enjoyed his best season this year since winning the best and fairest in 2002, the year he last came out of contract. He has kicked 22 goals, played his 150th match and every game of the season to date after recovering from a shoulder reconstruction in the off-season.

Having begun his career as a defender, Johnson has shared his time this year between a forward flank and midfield and is averaging almost 18 possessions and a goal a match.

He'll stay.

And if MJ isn't worth $340,000 I can't think of too many at the club that are.

considering we wont be paying hird 800,000 next year, i think we can afford to pay mj 340,000.

He certainly deserves it...he is one of the few players that give 110% all the time. Even in his quiet games this year, i can't recall an occasion where he goes into a contest with less than full commitment.

That would be the maximum id pay him

Anything approaching or over 400k is reserved for star on ballers or match winning or saving key position players. MJ is neither.

Mark Williams has come out and said that MJ is his #1 target and was last year too (in a deal with Josh Carr).

Also reported there is interest in Cupido and Bullen from other clubs (not named).

340? After the last two ******** years he isn't in a position to haggle price. He owes us.

he deseves it one of the only players who puts his heart and soul into each game, if all the boys played like him we would be in finals

He has been one of our best for the past 2 yeas, and we can ill afford to lose him

I agree, pay him a decent amount that is fair, but dont let him hold us to ransom.

It would be interesting to see if they offered Salopek for Johnson.

I wonder if Sheeds would go with that - even though it would rip a chunk out of Essendon's heart.

No way. Salopek is injury prone and has done nothing apart from getting drafted early on. Johnson is a best and fairest winner. Other clubs would be willing to give us a better deal than that for sure.

Port would want to give a 1st round pick + Salopek and even then i wouldn't be happy.

I think he'll stay. He probably realises we're freeing up a lot of money and he wants some of it, nothing all that wrong with that as long as he eventually signs.

How old is he? Is he 26/27, I suppose how much better can he get and can his body still stand to the level he performs, I wouldn't be bothered if he left eventhough he tries his guts out but then again a couple of young gun midfielders and a young defender must be out there for a trade, if they want money then go where the money is, remember we gave up caracella/heffernan/blumfield for a Mcphee/Cupido/Cartledge, McPhee who will captain the club one day, Cupido has it but must deliver it will the club kepp him for another yr and cartledge will be alright has Jeff White spring about him and still has youth on his side, so if there is a good deal goin around then go for it i say

Deserves it? Best player of the past 2 years?

Have any of you actually seen his games in 03 and 04? He was a disgrace. He's pulled his head in this year finally and all is forgotten? Not worth that much.

I think thats the biggest problem, johnno has been one of our best and his best isnt good enough. He has been a great and loyal servant for the dons, but we need some class in the middle. I think we should keep him, but we need to play him in the backline, and develop a skillful midfield. I would be happy to trade him for a quality midfielder, one of the bourgoynes.

Just thinking, seeing as we have quite a few young S.A blokes (Monfries, Nash, Slattery) i wonder if Williams is trying to jack up MJ's price so he can make a raid for them in a couple years.
