View Full Version : luke power
out of contract at the end of the season...lions going downhill. should we be interested in getting him into the red and black?
would certainly help balance the age/skill problems in our midfield.

If He wanted to come back to Melbourne we would be crazy not to make a big play for him. Were in desperate need of a classy midfielder, we tend to have a lot of in and under players in the middle but lack someone like a Power or a Travis Jhonstone. I do think however if Luke were to come back he'd probably want to play with his brother at the Western Bulldogs.

It would be great if we got him but he might be a target of the Dogs, so he can play alongside his brother.
Hope we make a serious offer for him.

I'd rather James Kelly.

Dogs don't need him. They need a key forward, not yet another quick, skilled midfielder - they've got half a dozen of them.
If the Bulldogs dont want him, he should come to Essendon.. his brother would be just around the corner.. they could car pool.. and when he went out for drinks with his brother and other Bulldogs players, he'd have something to talk to Scotty West about.
I'd rather James Kelly.
Spot on. Or Bartell... :D

Kelly and Bartel , how do you intend to get these fine players. I doubt you will finish low enough to get OOC player before Car or Coll. Bartel was Pick 8, 2001 , he'd be worth at least that plus a player. eg Bradley plus First round pick

Nothing. Don't think Sam would add anything to our list that isn't already there and I doubt the club would entertain getting Sam just to keep Luke happy.

God people know how to over-rate the value of their players.
Bartel is not worth Bradley and a first round draft pick. Very few players in the competition are. Infact, if Bradley was involved in a trade for Bartel then it would be Geelong handing over a draft pick and it wouldn't be a first rounder. Young KPP talent is worth a great deal more than young midfield talent, for the simple fact that there is more of them around.
Bartel isn't the player we are after, James Kelly is.
Any deal for Kelly I'm sure would involve a draft pick and a player, but it won't be someone like Kepler Bradley.

A sausage roll (not the jumbo one mind you) and a can of coke, no a can of mountain dew as that all sam power is worth. Please we have enough haks on our list, dont need anther one.

Hey , Of course I put a high value on him. Kelly and Bartel are now seasoned footballer who would step straight in and go bang for the next 150 games. Bradley is still 2 years off that but yes he has huge potential.
Kelly or Bartel the same aplies , how are you going to get him without paying bigtime

Let's get this straight. We are not trying to poach Kelly (or Bartel or anyone). Which means we don't have to pay over the odds for a player to convince a club to trade with us.
We have room in our salary cap and can afford to pay a player who is looking for more money. If Kelly believes he can get what he is worth at Essendon then it is up to the two clubs to do a fair deal. If the club's don't agree then a Nick Stevens type situation will occur and both clubs will miss out (depending on where Essendon finish).
Essendon won't jeapordise it's list to get Kelly to the club. If Kelly decides he wants to leave Geelong and come to Essendon then it is Essendon who is in the bargaining position. Not Geelong.

There's something about Kelly that doesn't appeal to me, i reckon he's a bit ahead of himself.
Power would be a great pickup but i don't think we'll get him unless we somehow finish bottom, which we won't.

Believe it or not Im not saying you are poaching anybody.Traditionally , Essendon and Geelong have had a good relationship with not treading on each others lists, trades when they have happened have been fair on the whole. I also think there is no doubt that Bomber Thompson has tried to copy the Essendon model for builing a list but I believe this thread shows an interest in gaining players to your club. As you should, all clubs are duty bound to improve their lists. Just a Geelong did last year with Ottens.
Now if for what ever reason , Kelly wanted to leave and was not particular if he went to Pies, Blues or Dons we would be under pressure , no doubt. But if he was particular and wanted to go to windy Hill it then places pressure on you to meet the demands of the club to ensure he ends up there. My opinion is that he wont go , but Im sure they said the same in PA about Stevens
i really doubt anyone would leave geelong the way the cats are going.
unless of course they were offered an absurdly low wage.

Incorrect. It puts the pressure on Geelong if Kelly says he wants to go. Because Geelong have the choice of either making him a deal or risk losing him for nothing.
Essendon won't lose out of this. We want Kelly, but we by no means need him. Sheedy will be more than happy developing his own list if we can't do a deal. We'll offer what we believe is fair and if Geelong aren't happy with it we will walk away, which also means there is a very good chance that Kelly will do the same.
Once a player says he wants to leave a club it goes one of two ways, the way the Ottens deal went or the way the Stevens deal went.

Actually more than likely they stay. BUT
Anyway
I will be my left nut and will throw in a rim job that Kelly will not leave GFC.
But back to Luke Power. Having three premierships and knowing that Brisbane probably wont do it again for another few years, plus being from Melbourne might make the guy have a think. The think with rebuilding clubs it they can offer him some big bucks now as they arent paying their rookies big dough.
Scandalous

Does anyone here thinks he might be staying with the Lions? I mean, you guys are already talking up the boy's worth etc. but do you think there's still a roar inside him, or should it be considered as gone?
no chance. oh he's definantly coming to Essendon. I got some sauce down at the club - put on my pie, and spilt a bit on my shirt. I went to the bathroom to clean it up and i overheard someone on the phone.. lots of talk about getting Power and how much they needed to spend... it was either a conversation with Luke's manager, asking what size contract he was after, or they were paying their electricity bill..

No idea whatsoever, and I doubt very much anyone on this site does have any idea.
All baseless speculation, but it's entertaining.
We'll see how much roar Power has left at the end of this season.

Agreed , the way the Ottens deal went was we paid a lot more than we wanted to and a lot less than Richmond wanted.Essendon wont lose but you may not gain either.Yes you will offer whats fairish ( to you) but if there are others involved in will up the price. If Essendon was the only interested party they would have hand, take it leave it and good chance of the bluff working but if all three clubs were after him and others as well , then Essendon has to come close to the market price to get him. If Carlton finish on bottom and chase him/he wants to go there, then we are in a pickle, they will encourage him to just nominate and we get SFA

Exactly. And that doesn't worry Essendon.

And that is the exact reason we won't be trading Kepler Bradley and a first round draft pick to get him, or anyone for that matter as you suggested in your first post.

The second time youve said that. define need. Clubs need players. Clubs need quality players. I get the feeling you dont rate , fine.Walk away like youve said. If all other clubs dont rate him, thats fine too. However the feedback through media etc rate Kelly highly and beiong chased.Sombody out there wants and needs him. Unless you finish bottom, which you , you will have to give something, whether thats picks or players, its trading for the sake of gaining a player. You would be able to nominate several players im sure Ess have traded and all done because you'd think its in your benifit.Bradley is probably dreamin, granted, but you will not get him for one of the washed up's that you have sucsessfully trade previously. You may feel your want/need is not as great as others , fine step away and let them have a go at him.

You don't understand what I'm coming from.
Geelong was in a position to become a genuine contender for the Premiership, but they NEEDED another tall forward. So they went after Ottens. Geelong want a Premiership and Brad Ottens is a very, very big part of that. Geelong had to chase him, because they need him.
Essendon is in a genuine rebuilding stage, we would love to have Kelly at Essendon, he is a fantastic player and I rate him highly. However, we aren't in the position that Geelong were in during the last trade period. Kelly isn't going to be the difference between Essendon winning at Premiership in 2006 or not as we aren't in a position to say we are a genuine contender next season. He would be a fantastic addition to our list and I really hope we get him but we won't be put in a position where we have to give up a lot to get him. Because if we miss Kelly we will be more than happy to continue developing our own, as for the most part we always have.
And for that very reason we will not sacrifise two first round draft picks in the manner Geelong did for Ottens to get Kelly. Geelong are after a Premiership, Essendon are rebuilding and a player like Bradley is a very big part of that.

On the same page now. And i Pretty much agree with you assessment of the Dons. As I previously said we have used you as a template, and it doesnt surprise me that you would prefer build a core group with your own picks. Good on you. It has been a while since you have been an ordinary team and maybe a couple of years at the bottom is the price you will have to pay. Cheers
