My apologies to Porthos. I predicted that Choco would drop Ebert for Shattock but it looks like he has dropped Mahoney instead. Oh well, at least he is not a small forward :)

I'm pretty surprised that Mahoney has been dropped. Unlike others here, I thought his position would be safe on the back of a really determined effort against the Bulldogs and a good enough showing against Hawthorn.
Having said that I have no problem with persevering with Brett, as long as he is introduced more into the midfield and starts to be more accountable defensively.
At least Cochrane was dropped, because if we had dropped Ebert and Mahoney, then I think we would have sucked bigtime!

Who will play Mahoney's role in Forward Pocket? Wilbur? Wangas? Let's hope we see the more skillful and determined Shattock that we saw in the 2 weeks before he was suspended.

Collingwood have some pretty good runners off the HB line - players like Lockyer, Johnson and Swan. Mahoney is a good competitor because he keeps his opponent more honest than someone like Ebert does.
I would have been inclined to make the one change (Wilson for Cochrane) and let Shattock put some good games together in a row. They obviously rate him but he certainly is not a small forward option.
I think we will line up as follows:
F: Wanganeen......Lade.......Primus
HF: Pickett.........Tredrea.........Francou
C: Dew........James..........Cassisi
HB: JB.......Chad.......Montgomery
FB: Wilson.....Wakelin.....Bishop
R: Brogan.....Peter.....Kane
Int: Walsh....Ebert....Kingsley....Shattock

I tell you what, if we concede more than ten goals this week, our defence is in real trouble.
A baffling move. We've either gone in with an extreme flood in mind, or Junior is getting a run up forward.

Yeah a lot of back flankers in the side.
Watch for Cochrane to replace Wilson at the last minute.

Shaun wants to be a midfielder. Shaun just re-signed. Maybe that was the deal instead of money! Sounds like a win-win. :)

Is Cochrane an emergency?

Is Cochrane an emergency?
Yes, Cochrane, Mahoney and White make up the emergency list.

Better hope Cochrane didn't cook Wilbur's chicken kebabs after training on Wednesday night ... ;)

This might explain the half back flanks r us attitude ...
"We're certainly aware how important defenders are", Williams said yesterday when he regained spirited backman Michael Wilson ... "A lot of possession is won in the back half. Important after that is keeping possession all the way to score."

But isn't it handy to have a couple of forwards to score?
Don't tell me that we're about to revert to the structure that served us so well at the start of the season - a forward line consisting only of talls.
I remember when we used to win the ball from centre clearances. I liked watching Port then.

That forward structure worked so badly that there were calls on this forum to sack our forward coach (which I still believe wouldn't be a bad idea :)). With Mahoney missing thru' injury and then out of form and Ebert doing his headless chook impersonation we really sucked and couldn't even kick a winning score against Carlton :(

We still have Ebert, Pickett, Wanganeen, James and even Dew if need be to push into small forward roles.
On Ebert I remember in his Magarey Medal year a feature of his game was his vice like tackling. It was really impressive. I'm not sure what the problem is at the moment with him in that regard.
Wilson used as a midfielder would work for me - I've always thought he was one of our best centre clearance players when thrown in there.

AFL players being stronger and faster maybe?

Sure they are, but it was the technique too. He really hit body on body and wrapped guys up. And he stopped them dead. It's not like the SANFL is populated by the 'before' poster guys for Charles Atlas ad campaigns.
He reaches in a lot in his tackling now. He does strap his shoulder doesn't he? Maybe he has a lack of confidence in that.

Seriously though a lot of these guys labelled as half back flankers can actually play up forward or even on the ball. Walsh, Monty and Junior Burger are all "back men" that have shown they can have impact up forward.
When James is not on the ball I believe you'll find him on the bike rather than up forward.
.....Wilson used as a midfielder would work for me - I've always thought he was one of our best centre clearance players when thrown in there.Ditto

Hopefully it means with a 'full' defense we can finally see Wanganeen get an extended run up forward. With the likes of Shattock, Wilson, Junior, Walsh and Monty able to play the small backs role, it's time to put Wangas where he'll give most 'bang for bucks' (not to be confused with Eddie McChins fantasies). Wanga's was our most dangerous small forward last year. More then any of the other small forwards he only needs 5 minutes to get 2 or 3 quick ones and either turn a game or put it beyond the oppositions reach.
With the Collingwood small forwards - really only having Didak with any class, I'd be playing Junior B. on him to release Wanga's up to the forward line.
You know, in all the half-back flankery, I only just noticed that Cochrane got dropped. And dropped in favour of Shattock too.
Could it be that the gold pass has been transferred?

If one of them passed it to the other, it would have been picked up off the ground ...
We'll know for sure when Mahoney has a 30 possie game for the Bays and Shattock has 7 for the Power, if Mahoney stays down and Shattock stays up.

Not before a bit more fumbling and some glances to the side and back to see who should get it next. ;)
