Can someone please tell me why Shane Watson is in the Australian Squad. This guy is bloody HOPELESS. He has been around for about 4 years now and delivered absoulutely nothing. He is a very average batsman who rarely is capable of slogging the ball like he is meant to be doing and his bowling pretty ordinary as well.
I say dump Watson for good and find another allrounder coz in my opinnion he is very lucky to be called an allrounder.

The problem with Watson is that he is being picked for a spot that doesn't suit him. He is a very technical, almost mechanical, batsman who can't come in and smash a 30 off 20 balls which is what is generally wanted where he is batting, and his bowling is serviceable - nothing more. He is expected to play an Ian Harvey type role, when he is much more of a Batting All-Rounder suited to First Class cricket.

Agree.

Watson's problem is that he is labelled an all-rounder.

In a pervserse way he'd have been better off giving up on his bowling, as he's actually a very accomplished TOP ORDER batsman, with a better first class record than Michael Clarke.

Far better suited to the longer form of the game, he is I agree being asked to do something he's technically not well suited to.

We should think of him as a batsman, who happens to roll the arm over more than capably.

Watson's problem is that he is a dud. End of story.

His problem is that he is reasonably good at both. Rather than being quite good at one and handy with the other.

He is a reasonable top order batsman at this level, but he is in a team of very good top order batsman.

He is still only young and has time to find his niche.

Much like Roy was (before he clicked) he is very frustrating to watch.

100% correct.

Agreed. Certainly not a one-day player in this current Aussie team, simply because he cannot play the batting role in the low to middle order. So for a while he will be stuggling to find his feet until he can get a bat higher up.

As for his bowling, well, it isn't really as effective as it could be. Because he has lost a bit of pace after the back injuries he needs to work on his accuracy and line and length to get a bowl in the future - otherwise he needs to focus only on his batting.

His problem is his mind's not on the job because he knows that bloke from Channel 7 is giving his ex an absolute flogging each and every night he's in England. Probably.

That, and he's the biggest dud since Scott Muller.

Yes, but Watson can throw the ball. :D

Watson is not up to it. I think we could go with James Hopes as he is a handy one day bowler and could play an Ian Harvey sort of role rotating with Hogg at the number 8 spot.

Seriously over-rated.

With the Supersub why didnt they get rid of him and put in B. Haddin or B. Hodge then replace later with a full-time bowler.

I think they should drop Martyn, play him at four and then be able to slot in another bowler/bowling all-rounder (Hopes?) at 7/8.

Why would you drop Damien Martyn to accommodate Shane Watson?

Pretty silly thing to say drop martyn after a fantastic couple of yrs and to bat watson at 4, watson is severley overrated and wouldnt be 1/10th of the player marto is

Not like that is hard  :p

Watson is a hack, in the side thanks to his move to QLD, no other reason

we're going to get along really well together, I can tell ;)

Martyn is 33 (soon to be 34), unreliable with the bat, useless with the ball, inflexible in the field and retaining him is only delaying the inevitable.

With the Supersub you dont need an all-rounder.
