It was reported over here in the local papers that Ken Judge was offered the position of Assistant Coach at St Kilda for 2002, but rejected it because his kids were settled in Perth and he didn't want to move around for a while. I just wanted to know what you Saints fans thought of this (if you even heard the news) and who might your club be looking for to fill those available Assistant positions.
Cheers!
GoEagles,
Judging from the reaction of the Hawks and Eagles supporters, I think that might be a good thing. :D
The rationale behind the decision to approach KJ (and apparently Drum) is to get some experience behind what is looking like an inexperienced coaching panel. With Thomas being a first year coach, I'm sure an assistant with previous experience is a high priority. I'd imagine the other assistants may come from retiring AFL players, the VFL/SANFL/Westar competitions or the TAC U/18's.

i understand the rationale behind the decision to appoint judge and i fully agree with it. watson in his first year was clearly out of his depth because he didn't surround himself with good support staff. i am disappointed that judge didn't take the job and i think the saints should now be looking at drum. drum was highly regarded as an assistant coach at the swans and a secondary role might be where he is best suited. mcguane might also be useful as a tactical coach.

Sainter and Strength - how did you 2 rate Ken Hinkley and the other Assistant Coach you had before they walked out on the club? Were they big losses or didn't the club miss them all that much?
GoEagles,
They were appointed by Malcolm Blight and when he was sacked they felt it was the right thing to do to leave.
Like Blighty they only coached us for 15 weeks so I don't think they'll be a big loss. Peter Jonas was a highly regarded coach in South Australia and Ken Hinkley won a few flags for Camperdown but it was just too early to tell.
It is vital we get a bit of experience in our assistant coaches. Danny Frawley is a good case in point, as a rookie senior coach he surrounded himself with expeienced assistants like David Wheadon and Greg Hutchison.

yes we need experience to back thommo up and someone like McGuane would do nicely... I don't doubt Thommo's off field player coaching but some extra tactical positioning wouldn't go astray.. :)
