A top win for the Pies today. Really had to win that one and we won it well. Puts us right back in the mix and hopefully we dont go missing again next week.

After Sturt kicked the first goal of the match thru Squire, Port steadied and really took control, having about 75% of the play over the next 15 minutes. We kicked three goals including one after a big fly in front of a pack by J Clayton. Sturt steadied after that with two goals from Thurstans and Chambers before first gamer, talented Kyle Jenner kicked a nice goal on the run a few minutes before the quarter time siren.

Port led by 9 points at 1/4 time with Elstone, De Pasquale, Jenner and M Clayton best for the Magpies whilst Squire, Thomson, Wicks and Chaplin, playing on Clive, started well for Sturt.

The second quarter started slowly with neither side being able to get the ball inside their attacking 50. It took 10 minutes before the first goal was scored which started a succesion of back and forth goals by both sides for the rest of the quarter with the best being a blinder from the boundary line from Roc Harry.

Port led by the same margin at 1/2 time. Biacsi and Harry had plenty of the footy for the Pies...Jenner did some nice things, as did both the Claytons and Eichner. Maric played pretty well in the ruck too. Sturt were best served thru Ben Nelson and Ben Eckermann, both who had about 10 touches each in the second quarter, whilst Chambers was causing some headaches up forward with 2 goals and quite a few marks. Thomson used his handball creatively whilst Chaplin had well beaten Waterhouse to that point.

Port opened the third quarter better with three goals to one in the opening 5 minutes to break out to a 20 point lead. Sturt then had more control over the match over the next ten minutes but couldnt put it on the score board. They had 4 shots on goal for 4 behinds. Waterhouse broke the goal drought after a brilliant run by Pickett to put the pies 4 goals clear 20 minutes into the quarter. Squire kicked a late one to bring it back to 19 points before Choppy kicked his second goal of the quarter 30 seconds before the end of the quarter to get the Magpies 25 points up at 3/4 time.

Choppy had a great quarter with two goals and many fine touches whilst Ports power midfielders in J Clayton and Elstone made sure Port won the contested football in the midfield. M Clayton continued his great game down back. Sturt had their chances in the middle part of that quarter but couldnt goal. Bowen had a few kicks and kicked a goal, Squire was busy whilst Thomson and Eckermann continued getting a lot of the ball, as did Whiteman.

The last quarter started with both teams going up and down the ground but without finding a real option up forward. Sturt again missed a couple of chances thru Thomson and Thurstans before Elstone drove the nail in Sturts coffin with a goal from 30m out. Scott Stevens popped his shoulder and dwent off the ground which led to Luke Slattery getting his first run for the day. He kicked 3 goals in 6 minutes to push the margin close to 50 points and really drive home the win. The match then stopped as a contest after that as both teams turned the ball over a fair bit and no more real scoring oppurtunities were created.

Player Reviews:
Poulton - Made some terrible mistakes today. His kicking is usually hit or miss but he was really really bad today.

Butler - Didnt get heaps of time on the ground but took a couple of nice marks around the ground

Stevens - Had to go off the ground early after being crunched in a marking contest with blood coming out of his face...came back on, got a few kicks and popped a shoulder and was taken off again.

Elstone - continued his consistent season with another close to BOG performance today. Awesome year this year.

Waterhouse - Well beaten by Chaplin but still kicked a couple of goals

Harry - Awesome again. Great little player, got a lot of touches today but seemed to do a hammy in the last quarter

Biacsi - Another who had a lot of the footy early on before quitening down a bit. His best game for a while

Brown - Not as good as normal, his least effective game for a while.

Pickett - Kicked 2 goals in the third quarter, set up a couple of others, had some good touches. Solid game.

Carr - His best game since returning to the club. Brute strength across half back with a number of solid runs fending off opponents

M Clayton - Outstanding first half, quiet second half...but the ball didnt go down there a lot in the second half

De Pasquale - Goodf irst quarter but was barely sighted after that

Fitzgerald - Quiet. Didnt get a lot of the footy

Ah Chee - Beaten by Chambers early, went forward and did ok

Eichner - Solid game. Beat Thurstans then Chambers.

Maric - Pretty good. Won a lot of hitouts, took some good marks, got some kicks.

Ilett - Solid, better second half. Mad a couple of skill errors but was ok.

J Clayton - Did his job, got his usual 20 odd touches.

Jenner - Top debut. Really like him as a footballer. Attacks the footy hard, great skills, exceptional football brain, definately has a future, quite possibly AFL too.

Taylor - Kicked a goal then made a few really poor kicking errors so was taken off the ground not to return

Slattery - Came on in the last quarter and kicked three goals in 6 minutes of the last quarter

Port Magpies 05 are a very odd team. Against North they were terrible, loose checking in the midfield, didn't seem to go in hard, and had no forwards except Clive "I Love Myself" Waterhouse. Yet against the Eagles and Sturt they play quality football and have good wins over top sides.

For me this was a hard game. I tipped Port because it was at Alberton and they had Picket in while Sturt had quite a few out.
Also, i HATE Port and really dont want them in the finals so i want them losing every game. At the same time Sturt are level with us in 4th position, and I want the Roosters to grab the double chance this year so i also want Sturt losing every game.

Macca maybe you should write for the Sunday Mail too, at least your reports cover the whole game and the best players (from either side). Did you dislike the report in todays paper like i did? It was all about Pickett being pivotal to the win, and the first half of the article was about Pickett yet he didnt get in the best players. Bloody crap effort

I find the Advertiser/Sunday Mails articles to be ridiculous. A lot of them are very disjointed and quite often dont actually discuss what happened in the match. Ive read plenty of 'reviews' where they will harp on about one player for the first 10 paragraphs, start talking about the game and the review stops when theyve mentioned who was best at half time. Thats why I love reading/writing reviews on the internet. Real reviews for and by real football supporters.

and how about the crowd of 1435????
there would have been that many near the beer stall on the scoreboard side of the ground

I reckon Tom Carr's role was underrated. He was brilliant in defence and back to his gutsy best. He inspired his teammates in the 3rd quarter with some brilliant in-close work.

Toby Thurstans would want to make a better effort if he wants to earn a recall though. Looked thoroughly disinterested at times.
