Just heard Matthews say on SBS that Warney told him "I'd rather die than see Australia lose this Ashes".
I know it's another Warne Appreciation thread but the man deserves it.

He is a legend, full stop

Bag him all you want about his off field stuff, but his off field stuff is totally irrelevant to his on field contribution to this great game.

He'd be in the Top 5 bowlers ever to play the game. Great cricketing brain, very smart cricketer

Warne is one of the few men left from the Allan border the team, in fact really he is the only one that is a product of the Allan border system, the one in which you fight till there isn’t a breath in you, you wonder at the mental toughness of the players who came up through the taylor/waugh era.

The boys who are used to only winning seem like rabbits in the headlights right now, there simply isn’t a response to adversity other than complete denial that they aren’t playing well.

I agree 100% now if only the powers that be thought the same we would have a test skipper with a brain.

What are the odds on warne bowling first in the second test?

Yeah, he's really dragging us out of this hole. Good on him, lets hope he and Dizzy add another hundred.

If we could squeeze out another 100 from the tail that would be awesome. Certainly they are not without chance of doing that with Lee to follow.

Well, see my selection for the Fourth Test side....of course, if we don't lose this Test match, the selectors will claim that everything is OK...and go with the status quo....most of this XI need a kick up their backside...

But back to the topic....a true champion, is SKW....

Yeah, Lee's no mug, Kaspa's proved he can hang around. McGrath reckons he's an all-rounder.... :D

When he got his Test 50 he compared himself to Bradman :D

I'll bet he did. It's funny though, since he got that 61, he even got a bat sponsor, not that they'll be seeing the sticker much.... :D

He'd still bat 11 in club cricket :D

Come on Fat Man give us a bit of that 99 World Cup semi final against South Africa attitude.

If there is one player that can spark the inspiration and passion of the team it’s the big fella.

Just shows the attitude of the man. How could you not love him, what a bloody gem.

At the moment if you had a combined side of the two XI's, Warne would be the only Aussie in it! sad but true, his team mates have been hopeless.

When Mcgrath was coming back from his lay-off and played for his club side - i might be wrong here but didn't he bat at about 5th drop for them?

Based on form this series.

you saying Strauss is in better form than Langer? Bell is in better form than Clarke? G.Jones is in better form than Gilchrist (bat and *shudders* gloves)? S.Jones or M.Hoggard are in better form than McGrath?

Langer and Clarke have done nothing.

No Squizza - where's the form? Go on the statistics for this series you wouldn't. Remember though, form is temporary and class is permanent. You would normally have a side based on about 9 Aussies and 2 Poms and at the moment that is reversed.

Let me see current averages for the Ashes including the last innings:
Pietersen 46.6
Trescothick 44.4
Vaughan 39.4
Flintoff 38.0
and then you have the top Aussies
Langer 36.4
Clarke 36.2
Gilchrist 29.0 - he would retain his spot because the Pommie keeper is a retard anyway

Flintoff is averaging a lot higher than McGrath with the ball but also with the bat and so is Hoggard.

But remember, as I said, in normal circumstances it would be reversed - my point is that this series the Aussies are ********e and do not have a captain worthy of wiping AB's arse!

ok toolman, here's the best XI going on current statistics

1. Justin Langer (187 runs @ 37.40)
2. Marcus Trescothick (222 runs @ 44.40)
3. Kevin Pietersen (233 runs @ 58.25)
4. Shane Warne (158 runs @ 39.50, 20 wickest @ 17.20)
5. Michael Vaughan (198 runs @ 39.40)
6. Andrew Flintoff (190 runs @ 38.00, 12 wickets @ 29.83)
7. Michael Clarke (179 runs @ 35.80)
8. Adam Gilchrist (116 runs @ 29.00, 13 catches)
9. Simon Jones (9 wickets @ 28.00)
10. Stephen Harmison (10 wickets @ 24.40)
11. Glenn McGrath (9 wickets @ 18.66)

12th man: Brett Lee ;) (14 wickets @ 28.42)

So I am back to Toolman now, not Tool! :D

Thanks for putting in the effort to get this team together as it makes interesting reading.

It looks pretty even with 5 Aussies in the side. Who would ever thought Hayden or Ponting wouldn't be in the starting XI? I know it's a bit dodgey basing this on Ashes stats as you have Warney and Pietersen in the opening 4  . Just goes to show what form is vs what class is?

The only problem with that scenario is that Kaspar's not playing, unless England feel sorry for us and let us bat 12.

Or maybe he is a super sub!!! :)
