View Full Version : Port obtain Hardwick!!
Port got Hardwick from Essendon for pick 31 and 47 in the draft!!
I must say we got a pretty good deal out of that one!!!
opinions?
Certainly an admirable person and player, but there are a couple of nagging doubts that i have, and I would be interested in hearing others' opinions on these.
One - i am concerned that Mark went negative in the last match e.g. Lyle in place of Murray, and the general type of play???
Two - Damien's age, and how many picks do we have above those now, and didn't he seem a little below his best in the grand final? Wouldn't we want pickups of that age to be grand final standard players next year? Did we do well out of the trade?
I am a strong Mark Williams supporter, but has the loss of his father, and lately his family's near-miss, made him feel overly defensive?
I don't know the answers to these questions - perhaps I am feeling a little negative about this trade because i still haven't got over the 3 point loss!

I am very happy with the pick up of Hardwick, his toughness and leadership will not go astray in what is looking likely to be a younger defence for Port next season.
Look for Thurstans, Morgan and Bassett to play roles in the senior team in 2002.
This also frees up Wanganeen to be a permanent forward / midfielder, which is also a plus for us
I just wish we'd traded for someone that could fill in if Tredrea gets injured......we've got about 6 tallish defenders now, but only 2 tall forwards of any note.
Very disappointed
where's wally?

good post and youve made a lot of fair points.
I bleieve we can get maximum 4 years out of Hardwick (he will play up to 34 in that case), with a minimum of 2. What he brings into our side is something we have lacked in our history - aggresion.
Hardwick was nearly an all australian player this season...one bad grand final doesnt mean he has lost the plot - not many bombers played well in that game!!!

Tredrea, Cornes, Lockwood, French, Lade, Brogan, Harwood can all play up there. Mead can play up there. Thurstans could play there.
You are forgetting all about Lade!! Very important to our club and our side and will be fantastic to see him return next season.
Very happy that we got Hardwick. A tough hard player that will benefit us in the next 2 or 3 years while we push very hard for a premiership.
Do we now need to delist 6 players?
3 compulosory, 2 for Hall & Brogan and 1 for Hardwick.
With us picking up Hardwick time may have run out for Poulton, Lyle and Bond, all half back types?
What are your toughts.

i actually thought it was 4 now, cos we got rid of two draft picks
but anyway...i reckon poulton and hardwick would be a good back pocket combination
this is how i see the team for next season:
F: Wanganeen, Lade , Cockatoo Collins
HF Schofield, Tredrea , Cornes
C Francis, Josh Carr , Dew
HB Wilson, Thurstans, Kingsley
B Poulton ,Wakelin ,Hardwick
R: Primus, Francou, N Stevens
I Montgomery, Guerra, P Burgoyne, James
First Emergencies: Morgan, M Stevens, K Cornes, Lockwood, Ackland, Bishop, Cassisi, Bassett, French
Backup players: Hall, Paxman, Mead, D Murray, A Murray, S Burgoyne, Brogan
Delisted: Bond, Lyle, Steinberner, Harwood, Koulouriotis
I think you will find Cassisi cementing himself in the side by mid season. All of our oung players will get there chance with the retirements soon of Paxman, Mead, Wanganeen and maybe Francou as well
I reckon Francou is a fair way off.....Francis is a lot closer to retiring, and also plays the wing (like Cassisi & Koulouriotis)

This will be a good side and difficult to select.
I see Bassett in the starting 18 (you only have 2 tall defenders)and K Cornes in the 22.
Lade in a forward pocket until match fit - lets not put too much pressure on him too early.
A back up ruckman on the bench - Brogan ( I rate him more than you )
Mead could be usefull off the bench.
I would like to see how Chad would go at CHB.
Summary - We get to play 26 each week. Has my vote

portly,
dimma was below his best in the grand final because he had his jaw fractured by dean solomon early on
secondly there wasnt a match up for him, no one in brisbanes line up that he could have played on really
thirdly, i think he may have been suffering a bit from headbutting the ground in the prelim final
dont take too much into his grand final form, or his age
he has got better the older he has got
he is a great leader, and a great player
walshy
good points - forgot about the head knocks!
Incidentally, where does "Dimma" come from?

Going to watch our new recruit play on Friday night in the International Rules game at the 'G. Should be good!
Essendon had better pick up some decent players with those two picks we gave 'em! I hope, for their sake, it was worth an All-Australian, Best and Fairest Premiership player!
Signing off,
