no one wanted to be the leg spinner in the school side, now there is a queue for leg spinners to train up. even some who are crap are looked at because legspinners are viewed with value again.
Shane Warne made leg spinners cool.
I think Gilchrist has done the same for wicketkeepers IMO. All wicket keepers for at least the next decade will be judged by the skill of Gilchrist both behind the stumps and with the bat.
before the measure of keeping was ability behind the stumps and if the keeper could bat better than the bowlers that was a bonus.
Now a keeper MUST have batting ability as well as keeping ability. In fact some countries (SL, England FE) rate the batting ability above keeping ability.
Gilchrist is a once in a generation keeper/batsman, I think everyone else is measured by his ability.

I dont know, we cant even find a keeper for every team at our club. Had to put up with the opening batsman keeping. Dont know what was worse, his keeping or his bowling :p

warne made leg spin cool becuase he was good at it, gilchrist is just an average keeper, actually pretty poor keeper compared to other players around australia and the world, all that gilchrist has made popular is swinging from the arse. ive noticed from the junior players at our club some which i have coached for a season or 2, all the want to do is score quick runs with big sixes and slashing 4's. it was a joke you try tell them that cricket is not just about slogging, but they dont get it, some of these kids are around 16 years old too.. you will get the odd one or 2 kid that wants to play proper the rest think its no good to say be an opener who blocks out 5-6 overs and plays himself in and see off the new ball, i think from a junior level and i think its since gilchrist mania hit when he smashes those quick tones, that junior cricket has gone down hill

that is dissappointing.
but as for swinging from the arse that might be easy for some but to have a test career average with the bat of 50 plus is not easy, even if it is swinging from the arse....
and its not a flash in the pan career either, its a sustained performance from Gilchrist, and often he gets his runs in adversity.
If everyone in the aus side swung from the arse in the top 6 with same arse that Gilchrist has, we'd win tests faster and have a 6 batsmen with averages 50 plus...

I'm not so sure.
Not as if you're seeing a whole bunch of kids trying to make their ears bigger. :)
