Can anyone throw up any names & details at this stage as to who would be our most likely pick-up @ pick 3 considering the fact that if Murphy does choose to stay in Vic ,carlton would most probably nab him with their first pick leaving Collingwood to go for Ellis at #2.Who would that leave for us who's any good ?Hurn's name has been mentioned but there is meant to be a question over his pace according to the experts.Any thoughts ?

To early to tell.

Draft camp, trading week, who knows what might happen between now and (?) November when the draft day is held.

Probably best just to keep an eye of the drafts and trading board and see what the gossip is there.

Good advice, Grendel.

Hawthorn's top picks are already encouraging vibrant discussion at -

It would seem that, at this point, Ryder, Kennedy & Hurn are drawing the most support for pick 3.

As Grendel says though, there's a lot that can (and surely will) transpire before draft day in November, so its all just rampant speculation at this point.

yeah, love that comment about rampant speculation. but geez its fun. :D

another draft i will be counting down 4.

wonder if i will fall of my chair when our first pick gets read out again this year. heart was so set on bling. just goes 2 show what i know.......lol

great great call AC, drafting 2 key positions last year. hope u do it again. call out the 2 best key position in the draft at picks 3 and 6.

ryder and kennedy would make me very happy.

long way 2 go though, and like was said be4, so many things could change.

TAC finals at optus oval this weekend might show more about some of the draftees of 2005

Wouldn't mind getting Hurn. I keep saying this pace thing is overated. Get guys who can play footy first, then worry about the pace.

I think West Coast being on top of the ladder this year (well most of the year), and running people off their feet has made supporters think that everyone has to be fast. It stands out a lot more at Subiaco than it does on the smaller ground when in and under grunt really wins who the big final games.

I honestly don't think we are nearly as bad for leg speed as people make out anyway. Our backline can all provide run, Brown, Osborne, Croad, etc have pretty good pace, Hay does as well when he knows how to use it. Roughie moves pretty well for a big man, Bateman, Young Lonie all can break the lines and use the ball well. Crawford still runs harder than most in the comp. That Franklin guy moves ok too. Willo... quicker than anyone off the mark. My point being everyone always brings up Hodge Mitchell Lewis as our problems... that's three players who aren't super quick, but are bloody good footy players.

Pick guys up with skill for sure, but I'm worried we'll miss out on a good player by stressing over the fact he may not be as quick as some of the other lesser talented midfielders.

Young was a bonus in the rookie draft, and was probably the kinda player we were crying out for. Makes it a little easier for us to just go for the best player. If its Hurn, take it, or we may regret it in time.

Very well put, i concur 100%, You just have to watch our game on the weekend to see where our skill level lies, we need players that can be proficient with there feet, sadly there's only a handful of players that can do that at Hawthorn at the moment. WE NEED MORE!!!!!

Pick 3 - Hurn

Pick 6 - KPP

Probably best just to keep an eye of the drafts and trading board and see what the gossip is there.Point taken Grendel ,however it's just that this year, not a lot has been said about the potential draftees in the media apart from Murphy ,whereas this time last year ,everybody knew that Delidio ,franklin ,Griffen ,Roughead etc where going to go first as it turned out.Perhaps that might be an indication that the draft isn't as strong ?......i'm not sure.Whatever the case ,sad as it might seem ,draft day & trade week are again shaping up to be the most exciting events for Hawk supporters this year so i think we can be forgiven for getting a little ahead of ourselves.

Understand the concerns/curiousity Buster but basically, I think we just need to be patient.

Remember as you point out, last year the frenzy that got built up late over Tambling and the fall out when we took Roughy "Hawthorn *^$*@) again" and the abuse directed towards Bucky, Clarkson etc.

Now, none of us would swap Roughy for Tambling and reckon it was a stroke of brilliance.

So what I'm more than prepared to do is wait, have a bit of faith in the blokes we've put in charge of spotting and selecting these kids instead of gnashing teeth over it.

The crop is even but (iirc) Clayton at the Bulldogs wrote in an article that there's still a very good bunch of talent at the 'sharp end' (i.e early) of the draft and how he'd love to have a couple of selections in the first half dozen or so.

We have that, I reckon we should be okay there so again, prepared to wait and see how things pan out for an event that is still three months (yea, that long) away.

The only good thing left for Hawthorn fans this year is the Draft, its an exciting time for the HFC, so i see no reason why we should not be talking about it now

I'm sure alot of people now know how capable Bucky is after last years master stroke in netting Roughead and Franklin. so i dont think there will be any repeat of last years abuse.

I honestly suggest we sit back and see who Bucky picks....

Even if we go with Hurn, no big deal, a top 3 pick will turn out to be a star anyway. Yeh he lacks pace, but we are not exactly slow at the moment, wed be unbeatable around the clearances tho...

Bucky drafted fantastic last year, I hope he drafts a young ruckman and the best midfielder.

As long as they can consistently hit a target by foot.......I'm happy!!

Weren't we too slow in the 80's as well?
Would anyone say Brisbane were fast through the trebble? I'd suggest whist they weren't slow they weren't overly fast either.

Platten, Collins, Pritchard, Robertson, Eade, Wittman, Dunstall *as a quick f/f there were few to match him*, Tuck (remember when he ran down some young Richmond kid around his 400 game mark who was literally half his age). All were quick. Then you had decent running types (Greene, Schwab, Kennedy, Dipper).

So no, I wouldn't say we slow in the eighties. Not blindingly quick maybe but had our share of speedsters just the same.

Bingo.. We have a winner!!

In the end, that's all that really matters!
