View Full Version : Blame the Selectors - Not Ponting

Really, blaming Ricky Ponting is short sighted and stupid.
Who is in charge of selecting out teams? The selectors are hopless, complacent and are too up themselves to see the potential decline in the Australian team. Hayden's form in international cricket has been on the decline for over a year now. Marty is weak and gets out the same way everytime he plays and katich has never really been a player at this level. We used to have Steve Waugh to stabalise our lower order - now there is noone with any guts playing down there. Continually went in with four bowlers when Symons could have been used as an alrounder. Hodge got a century but still couldn't get the gig over a sadly useless martyn or katich. Nearly our whole top order is in their mid 30's.
Ding dong, does anyone in this country have any ideas about rebuilding a side. Or do they think that the day will never come when we have to replace our team.
And to put up Warne for the captains job is just... well... extremely dumb. The guy is a poser.

I agree but I think you're a tad hard on Martyn.
He has only had one poor series in 18months.

i'm guessing you pretty much picked the same squad of 16 to tour england back in may. its sooo much easier hindsight isn't it ????
i'm more than happy to admit i picked 15 of the 16 that got the gig to england, i had watto in my squad instead of tait.

When you're 33, you ain't gonna be allowed a lot of time to regain your form, Damien Martyn is definitely on the knife edge right now

Mmme maybe. Never really thought too much about it but I was worried about martyn and katich and Hayden. They proved correct in the end, especially Katich and marty. Katich had a rather crap summer in Australia and Hayden hasn't looked good for a long time. been wanting some change now since Waugh left. It was a bummer when Katich got the gig. There are plenty of younger players waiting for an opportunity.
I think hayden and Martyn are gone and hope katich is out.

Got out playing some really soft shots when we needed someone to stand up.

Ok, you had me untill you suggested play Symonds
But, most of your problems were with the batting, most of the criticism of ponting was his shocking field placements

You and I weren't following the same matches, eddie....yes, the batting was bad, but the bowling, apart from Warne and McGrath in the first Test, was not up to test standard. The quicks gave up too many runs and were not consistently penetrating. Take away warne, and it could have been 4-1 to the Poms.
No idea what you have against Symonds. He clearly has the power to be a dominant Test batsman, if he doesn't use stupid shots...and yes, he does tend to go out that way. But based on the performances we've seen, why not give him a go? I'm not saying put him above of your beloved Hodge, who does deserve a shot as well, but bringing them in together, with an order like this
Langer
Jacques
Ponting
Hodge
Clarke
Symonds
Gilchrist
We need to go younger- no doubt about that- and maybe Watson can be worked in over the next year or two- but why not put out that batting lineup for the summer and see how they go? Tell the new guys you will not be dropped after 1 or 2 Tests, but you will have the six tests to get your eye in and see how you do as a Test bat.
Folks who say Symonds failed as a Test cricketer are misguided at best- he had two Tests, FFS....if we based Test evaluations on two Tests, then your boy Ian Bell would be the greatest batsman ever- but he has now been found out. Give Roy an equal opportunity to sink or swim....

David Hussey >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Andrew Symonds, in batting and bowling
I guess most of my bagging of Symonds and Watson is because there are better players ahead of them and they are only getting mentioned because they are perceived as all rounders and Aussies are desperate for a Test All rounder

Can you then explain last year's shield averages?
Roy a little under 40 and D Hussey a little under 25?
Roy turned his arm over for 140+ overs, and I find no record of Hussey in the stats
Looks like Roy>>>>>>>D Hussey
Next comparison, edward? And please remember we are talking about 4 day cricket....throwing up one day numbers does not matter, although Roy would ****** all over almost anyone you could name there.....

Wow, 1 bad season in between 3 good ones.
03/04 58.53
04 69.21
05 75.41
********monds
03/04 37.33
04 62.28
05 73.25 (And constantly dropping game by game)
So Hussey has had 1 bad season and you are set to claim Symonds is better? Haha. 37 is Symonds career average, Husseys is 57

Well, when you start off with a couple of tons, your average does tend to drop....looks to me as though Symoinds is equal to Hussey in the crap county coimp, where everybody gets centuries....and that their shield seasons the past two years even out, with Roy having a better last season, which should count.
What happened to Hussey's superior bowling, ed?
And symonds IS one of the top fielders in the world....no debate on that one, mate...
Hussey may be the answer in a year or two- but let's see how he does with the Shield this year (or will you use Junction as an excuse?)
Right now, I'd take roy on all three areas...Hussey maybe in later 2006, if required...I've also posted a thread on this- middle order bats- so take it there and let this thread get abck to the original topic

Symonds doesn't cut it as a test batsman. He doesn't have the patience. We have far better options

Talking of Ponting, watching a DVD of the ******** summer when India and Pakistan toured, he made a terrible mistake, he didnt listen to the call of Steve Waugh, 2 arrogant ****************s stranded at the same end, was funny to see

I wasn't aware that selectors were responsible for setting a field and choosing who bowls at certain stages of games.
I wasn't aware that selectors were responsible for setting a field and choosing who bowls at certain stages of games.
But they were responsible for picking Brett Lee.

Responsible for selecting two out of form fast bowlers. Responsible for selecting a side with four bowlers. Responsible for selecting Katich. Responsible for trying to win an ashes series with half the team past their best.
