Well, as there is not a great deal of football related material to talk about at the moment, I thought I'd try to generate a little football discussion on who the Lions should recruit in the November 25th end of season draft?
It's always fascinated me, just how important to the on-field fortunes of the various clubs, astute drafting is. Brisbane in my opinion over the last eight years or so has mostly drafted and traded quite astutely.
So............
Which four players would you draft if you were Leigh Matthews or a member of his match committee?
What sort of players to we need to take us four-five years into the future to replace ageing stars, such as Alistair Lynch, Martin Pike, Shaun Hart and Marcus Ashcroft?
What deficiencies or lack of depth in various areas do we have? For example, are we light on small, swift midfielders now that Rusca and Robbins are gone?
Do we need another tall defender, to replace Kennedy?
Do we have any tall leading forwards coming up to replace Lynch?
Can we adequately cover injuries to our key players such as Leppitsch or Voss?
With the delisting of Robbins, the retirement of Kennedy and the trading of Picken, Knobel and Rusca 34 players remain on our list from the 39 listed in 2001. Marcus Ashcroft will be elevated to the veterans list, which means we will have space for 5 players. My guess is that one space will be left vacant for either someone in the pre-season draft OR someone coming off the rookie list during Season 2002 ala Robert Copeland. The Lions appear to have decided that four will be chosen with our first four picks at #19, #35, #45, and #51.
Are there local Queenslanders of note, or should we draft the best young players available throughout the country?
Should we re-cycle one or two delisted players from other clubs to fill any urgent shortfalls?
Just as importantly, who should we use our second round priority pick on?
