here it is again:
ST Marys - Saints Green and Gold formed 1950S
Darwin - Buffalos Double Blue formed a 1917
Nightcliff - the tigers gold and black formed 1950S
St Districts - crocs red white black formed late 1980s
Wanderers - eagles blue and yellow formed 1917
Palmerston - magpies black and white formed 1972
Waratahs - the cream puffs or warriors* if your not a local
red and white formed 1917
*Waratahs decided in the early 1980s to follow the lead of Woodville cause they were sick of being called creampuffs.

A lot of people haven't been to Darwin and just dump crap on it without even realising what type of place it is.
Having been born here, but lived in a bi city for a while (Paris, and Sydney) I still appreciate Darwin for what it is.
If your a big city slicker, then Darwin probably isn't the place for you, because you'll probably get bored.
However I appreciate Darwin, for the layed back multi cultural society that it is. (Not many places in Australia where you can walk in with thongs for example :D )
Its hard really to judge it for someone else, because they may have other opinions, but i'm sure if you moved up here you'd get used to it.

First game 1q pretty scrappy and some pretty
ordinary umpiring. Darwin went to 6 goal lead
by second q.
S.Districts came back in the last to lead with a
few mins to go. Darwin player marked in the last
30 secs and goaled to give them the win.
5 goals to Bruce Jarmyn (s.d)
Kelvin Maher was listed to play but I didn't sight him.
Only saw the first half of the second game Nightcliff
blitzed them from the opening.
There was an all in brawl (30second worth) during
the first q.
Many of the Saints players hadn't made stat by half time,
those that did were turning the ball over.
Worst preformance by Saints for Decades.
Todays game is Wanderers v Waratahs
Mark Motlop is the eagles new coach. He's
had success at 2 or 3 different clubs as well as having
coached rep teams. They should be an improvement
the last couple of years.
Chris Williams is the Warriors coach continuing
from last year when he took the then premiers
to near the foot of table.

They're very good at the moment.
Have been since moving to Palmerston a few
years back.
When they were North Darwin they
were arwful and nobody wanted to know them.
Coached by Russell Jeffery who's probably the best
in the league.

That's how close the houses are.
At half time Saints were in a huddle for a long while
(out in the middle of the field) it all seem rather controlled.
and the Tigers didn't really add to their lead after the break.
i'd be suprized if they played that badly next week.

Its gonna be interesting how the surface at Football Park (mararra for the interstaters) will hold up after they moved the games for next week
I wonder if Darwin's chances on hosting an Ansett Cup match are gone.. i hope not :(

I hope we at least get one AFL game even if its a NT side vs. AFL team..
Whats happening exactly with the ground? It looks as if it is turning into a Colonial :p
And whatdya think is going to happen with the Aboriginal All Star game. It was scheduled for Australia Day, no?
The worry is that those are the games
that the ntfl relies on for a good
percentage of its revenue.
I walked along the grandstand wing last
week just to see how bad it was (didn't
get out to the centre) it was like a mudflat with
turf on top. Apparently the middle of the ground
is rock hard.
needs a big fix.
Whens the money going to start flowing from
the afl to fix this and the other ground problems?
If the NTFL loses the pre season /australia day
game then it will be in big trouble.

Reality was the wanderers defence particuarly
the along their half back line that is responsible
for the score line.
Palmerston were bringing the ball down
to th 50m arch and taking shots with absolutely
no pressure applied by the def.
After the break lack of fitness really took its
toll on the eagles as the ball rarely made
it past the half way line.
A memorable run from the eagles forward line 80 meters
for a goal to the Magpies Dallas Cook during the 1st Q

Oh ... so what happened to North Darwin?
North Darwin formed 1972 (as "The Internationals")
Made up of mainly soccer players they were
very very very bad for the first 5 or so years.
The turning point was when they brought in a
lot of southern recruits (Danny Jenkins
Alan Smith Peter Belford Peter Munro etc) were
a top team from 1977 to 1981 in both senior grades.
N.D played in the 1980 grand final very poorly (lost by
40 points in the rain v buffalos) 1981 slaughtered
wanderers for 3 quarters then went to sleep in the
last - still won.
The day after the 1981 grand final all of their
southern recruits left on a plane and never came back.
This factor (as well as a nightclub they ran at Nightcliff)
put them in serious difficulties and they were basically abismal
from 1982 to 1994ish when they moved to Palmerston
(changing there name to Palmerston).
It was basically this or fold.
After moving to Palmerston they brought in Bully Abala as coach
then Russell Jeffery (Micheal mclean was assistant?)
leading to a permership last year. Jock Mcleod
(andrews brother) as well as Mark West are
currently playing with them.

OK then.. Keep up the good work on your site. It's looking good.
I'm happy to search for any info you need
on the NTFL/CAFL or what ever.
Also the Palmerston football club of the 1930s
was totally unrelated to the current Palmerston Magpies.
I seem to remember a Katherine team in the 1980s
and a fire- fighters team in the 1960s
(might have only been B grade though).
An NTFA league (From this year called "top end australian football association")
has been running since the 1980s.
This was meant to be the NT's version of the VFA
Teams that have competed this year in the a grade
include Banks, Tracey Village, Nt University, pints, and a
palmerston magpie team.
Round 4 preview
Saturday
St Marys v Palmerston (the gardens)
Played at gardens oval the former home of the NTFL
as officals desperately try to repair Football Park's surface.
This should be a relatively easy afternoon for Palmerston
the regining premiers ,who along with Waratahs, are
looking the form team of the competition.St Marys
aging champions should be no match for the Magpies
forwards. St Marys D.Nolan returns
Palmerston loose the Davey Brothers
Wanderers v Stn districts (Freds Pass)
Wanderers are no match for any body at the moment

heart of the rural area.

Nightcliff is a large sea side suburb about 7km to

Nightcliff boast the biggest and perhaps
the fittest forward pack in the competition.
but haven't been tested against the tops sides

Personally - I can't see the AFL doing much.
I know Wayne jackson hates Darwin. He might say its a good venue, but I think he hates it.
He wasn't very happy at the last Ansett Cup match because of the condition of the grass. THis bloke is a complete tool, does he realise that when a cyclone/low hovering around Darwin at this time brings with it buckets of rain. I wonder if some of the big ones down south could sustain it.
Heres a couple of articles on aspiring territory footballers
From NT Football Insight (author Unknown)
"Southern Districts left footer Jared Brennan is

Saturdays match was Jared's 4th at league level
this follows an exciting and successful NT underage
represenative season in 2001 when he representated
at U18 (melbourne) and U16 (Adelaide), the latter as
one of 6 overage concession players.
The lanky easy going 17 year old midfielder
was outstanding in the crocs U18 grade last season
aand continued to blossom in the territory thunder 2001
programme matching highly rated opposition in games in
Brisbane Melbourne Darwin and Adelaide.
Jared received the NT 2001 U18 johson family medal
rising star after polling well in mcadam U16 and
mclean U18 medals.his marking pace and courage
have already attracted interest fron AFL recruiting
staff and possibly winning the 2002 casuarina
award can only improve his profile."
From the Centralian Advocate
BY Anthony BARICH
"Phillip Bennet's dreams of hitting the big time came
one step closer when he was named Territory Thunder's
u18s most consistant player last week the former federals
full back and ruckman was NT's best in its five point loss to
Tasmania in the u18 nationals in melbourne and has his sights
set on Adelaide.
Having looked at university courses in Melbourne. his TAC cup
hopes were dashed when he discovered he will be too old next
year, but can still play U18s in the SANFL. Bennett made his
debut in the NTFL in Darwin on Sunday.
He lined up for Waratahs with fellow Federal Demon
Tom Logan, who was best on ground in their 15.13 (103 to 14.12)
loss to Nightcliff.
Bennett had high priase for Logan who was named the under16s
most consistant player. Bennett said:"Tom is an amazing player
-he's still 16 and has a big future ahead of him.
Bennett who works for aflnt game development in Darwin
and in alice springs during the CAFL season is keen on GLENELG(????)
where he did coaching clinics this year and Eagles where his grand father played.
Bennett said I'm not too sure what to expect of the SANFL.
People say it's more suited to taller players where Territory
footy is for faster on-ballers
As an accomphished ruckman and fullback the SANFL suits
Bennett down to the ground. Bennett aims to try out at Glenelg
and Eagles in Feburary next year. Wests(Alice Springs) player

Concerning this NT State side v. AFL team, does anybody know who it may be?
In my opinion, they should take on more SANFL teams, seeing that they could be entering our league in the next few years.
In fact, if the NT does enter a side, the games against AFL teams could be a thing of the past. Why? 'Cause NT players would be eligible to play in the SANFL tri-colours and mix it with the best from interstate.
I say that because Tasmanian players are eligible to play in the VFL state team. Now that would rock.
Rock-hard Territorians and Croweaters against Tassie and the Big V. That would be something to look forward to.

the first q was an even tussel.Palmerston kicked a goal
within second of the opening bounce.
Waratahs put the Magpies under enough pressure
to stymy their usual goal kicking blitz.
Waratahs attack however was not up to the task as it
appears their leading goalkicker Valentine Pautijimi

In the Second Palmerston kicked away from Waratahs

Why wouldn't they?
It would be the only opportunity that Northern Territorians will have to play proper State matches...and it would not just be South Aussies, it would be a joint effort between them and the Territorians. It would certainly equal the odds against the VFL, which has Tasmania in its grasp.
Stuff matches against clubs.
I think that NT players would rather play against a whole state league. Perhaps when the NT joins the SANFL, the SA Football Commission will decide to negotiate use of Marrara Oval to play a state match up in the Top End...like matches against Western Australia or Tasmania.

They'er jumpers are more like East Perth with a yoke.(except mostly dark blue and light blue yoke)
They had a light blue jumper (with a buffs head in the centre) a few seasons ago it lasted 2 seasons then they changed back to the one they had worn for the previous 30 years.

Killer,
How's the standard these days. Last games I saw were about 5 years ago & I thought it had improved dramatically on the past. Seems to be a less even comp in terms of the bottom teams but more even at the top.
Standard is good.
Nightcliff and Palmerston outstanding
best ever in comp in terms of both coaching
and play.
Reckon if you combined them you'd have a
mid ranking SANFL side.
Wanderers are awful.

Kelvin Mahers not playing this season
AhChees been back 2 weeks brilliant player
has turned the season round for the Buffaloes.
Baj Singh (ex West Adelaide now Peel)
is the NT News pin up boy the they never
shut up about his marking ability (an average
15 a games in recent games)
Phil Smith (ex Port Adelaide now maybe Glenelg)
been averaging 4-5 goals a game.
Good full forward got a bit frustrated on
the weekend spent the whole day wrestling
with David Parfitt.
One of the Davey brothers (Palmerston)
has gone to P/Adelaide they'er both pretty
good.
Apparently Trent Hentschel (Palmerston) is
burning up the track in Adelaide.
The Motlop Brothers were having a kick to kick
(barefoot) at half time during the Darwin/Wanderers
game.
I haven't sighted Norm Murphy for a while.
Must be injured. Not the same player he was
before he spent 2 years in the reserves for Sturt.
Darrel White was at Football Park before Christmas.
Andrew Mcleod wanted to act as Palmerston's runner
but he was banned cause of a fear he might hurt himself
or someone could hurt him (insurance).
Jason Burgonue (p/adelaide)
Won the News player of the week for Nightcliff
against Palmerston

Thanks Maestro
Any other youngsters we can expect to see in the NT team during the rep games or names that might feature around draft time. Guys like Squires or Masters?
