Brett Lee is a total moron. (As most fast bowlers are I suppose)
His celebrations border on the ridiculous. He expects a ticketape parade in his honour every time he dismisses someone like Andy Caddick.

My all-time favourite cricketer would have to be Viv Richards, closely followed by DK Lillee and Steve Waugh.

Viv was cool, calm and collected. He was also one of the sweetest hitters of a cricket ball I have ever seen. Watching Lillee vs. Richards was one of the greatest battles between batsman and bowler and it is what test cricket is all about.

I also admired:

Gavasker
D. Gower
Michael "Wispering Death" Holding
Clive Lloyd
Joel "Big Bird" Garner
Dougie Walters
Thommo
Hooksey
Marshey
Ian "Beefy" Botham
Miandad

These days I respect the qualities of:

McGrath
Warnie
Sachin
Dravid
Laxman
Pollock
Kallis
No one in the current Windies team (Sad but true :( )
M. Waugh
Gough

Loved Ian Chappell. He was tough, superbly skilled and a great leader. Steve Waugh is similar to him in my view. Also I admired Lillie and McGrath. Perhaps the player I enjoyed watching most was Jeff Thompson in his prime.

From other nations Richards, Garner and Holding were just awesome. Also Javed Miandad. I respected him even though he drove me nuts he was a great cricketer. I also like Pollock from SA.

Brett Lee needs a solid boot in the backside.

i agree viv was my all time fave aswell
although i was pretty young and didnt see much of him live, i just love his attitude, ive read a lot about him, and can watch highlights of him for hours, just have a great deal of respect for the man
david boon was another fave, just so strong and so proud to play for australia, ian healy was much the same
jamie siddons and simon odonnell were two others i rated highly, mainly because my father was team manager at essendon c.c, when they were both playing and i got to see them every week, simon actually taught me how to bat and bowl

of the current side, i would have to say shane warne and damien martyn
both have worked so hard to get where they are now and deserve every respect, i admire the way martyn has just hung in there and waited for his chance and then grabbed it with both hands
warne is just amazing, ive played cricket all my life, watched it all my life, but then warne does something that is purley unexplainable, you think its all over and then warne lets one go from outside leg and it takes off

also love watching ricky ponting in full flight

Overall - Brad Hodge (1 game, averaging 250)

Gough is a star, good enough to be an aussie
has a huge heart and gives as good as he gets

Chris Cairns also fits into that category, love watching him play with the bat or ball

I'm currently reading Viv's autobiography...good read actually. I recommend it (so far anyway!)

I noticed that the Essendon CC are up against my lads from NMCC this weekend at Arden Street. Hopefully, we can beat you lot at cricket! Sure as hell can't at footy at the moment....:(

I noticed that Liam Pickering and Jade Rawlings play for NMCC...saw the picks on the NMCC website and they look like the same blokes as famous for AFL (can anyone confirm)...begs the question...how many AFL players play grade cricket during the summer...wouldn't be too many I would think...

Don't know about Viv Richards....I found him a bit too arrogant for my liking. I have this video where the Windies are playing England and some English guy has a ball flick his thigh pad on the way through to the keeper.

Massive appeal, umpire shakes his head and says not out. Viv sprints down the wicket right up to the umpire, screaming the whole way. Umpire, obviously intimidated, changes his mind and raises the finger.

Commentators and batsmen in shock. It's an amazing piece of footage, and it's a shame that things like that (to a lessor extent) still happen in Test Cricket.

My favourite: Merv and Ian Healy.

Current Favourites: Punter, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh and Funky!

My All-time favs would have to be Allan Border, Clive Lloyd and David Gower. All left hand batsmen who were fantastic to watch yet, totally different in style. Border was all grit and determination, Lloyd was all power, and Gower was was the most beautiful stroke player I've seen (shame his a Pom).

When I was a kid playing for my school or club, I tried to bat like those three, but didn't quite manage it. I finished with a junior batting average of 5.75 (lower than McGrath - How embarrassing). My bowling average was lower, 4.25.

My favourite players now would be Slater and Bevan.

Stucey

A. Symonds. This guy is a champion, as he proved once again on the weekend. And he doesn't mind having a real go!! Great batter, exceptional fielder.

GH,
yeah mate this was fu@king OUTRAGEOUS, it was the 89/90 series in Windies, we were coming off two 5-0 'blackwashes' & a 4-0 loss & we sent over a really inexperienced side that everyone thought would get smashed & we won the first Test & would have won the third but they slowed the over rate down so slowly that all we could do was draw. Then in this match, Rob Bailey was the batsman & this decision killed his Test career, afterwards an English commentator said on the radio that Viv's behaviour was shocking, total intimidation of the umpire & so Vivy steamed into the commetary box & threatened to kill him-I actually think that he did this twice.A real hard man ay? threatening some weedy middle aged , bespectacled Englush public school by type. That's why when we beat them in 2000 I was so happy to see them on their knees for once rather than the other way round.

Having said that I still think that he's the best & definitely the most destructive batsman I've ever seen.My two favourite bowlers ever are Lillee & Thommo (we just don't seem to breed them like that over here:( ) DK is probably the best ever & a real character with it & Thommo must have been the quickest of all time & anyone who bowls with an action like that is only aiming for one thing & that's pace.
One of my favourite batsmen was Richie Richardon, he used to play this back foot drive to pitched up deliveries with both feet together & a FULL swing of the bat when it came off it was unreal, when he got out to it...well it was a bit of ashocker to watch. My hero as a kid was Goochie, I could never work out why he couldn't transform his 1st class form to Test cricket & just when I though it was too late at the age of about 34, for a couple of years he became arguably the best bat in the world.

Briedis,
have you got to Viv's thoughts on Craig McDermott in his biography yet?Not too complimentary!

Hey Briedis, check out Vivs description of a charity match in Qld featuring Jeff Thompson and Geoff Boycott. Classic!

Tend to agree Viv lost the plot a bit towards the end of his career.
I think the commentator Dipper talks of is Henry Blofeld?

Viv did strom up to the press box when he was supposed to be leading his side out onto the ground, apparently to 'sort out' a problem with the press.

Well at the moment it would be Damien Martyn. The guy's a legend! He has an air of "I really couldn't give" and still manages a brilliant average for both tests and one dayers. Looking forward to seeing him play when I can go watch the cricket after my exams.

My favourite player from the past is Craig McDerrmott. My favourite player now is Mathew Hayden. Both Queenslanders, and that is good enough reason for me for them to be my favourite. I don't have a favourite player from overseas, because as they are trying to beat us, I hate them.

It's a great read.... a very colourful character!

I was reading that part last night! I was killing myself laughing! Poor old Boycott (not!)

One great thing about reading Viv's book is I have plenty of ammo for the fast bowlers when I open the batting this Saturday (unless we field first of course!)

It also amazes me how full on it gets out there.. I mean who would ever thought AB would agree to a fight with Viv after a match? AB wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds - I think that's why he happened to have the press around him at the time Viv showed ready to go at it:p

One thing that this generation has missed out on is the McDonalds cricket poster.

All you had to do was say "TwoAllBeefPattiesSpecialSauceLettuceCheeseOnionsPicklesOnASe asameSeedBun" (or something like that), give 'em 10 cents and you had your poster of the three world series teams.

Dipper,

I read the part about McDermott last night.....WOW...talk about coming out with all guns blazing!! Called him a pussy! I loved the call from Viv at slips about McDermott *****ting his pants! Very funny.

I wonder if that was in that test that they won by 1 run and McDermott was last man out for Oz....came off his forearm or something from memory....

Breidis, I think those comments were made during a series in the WI late 80's/early 90s?, I remember reading them in another cricket book. From memory, Viv had already retired when the Test you are thinking of was played in Adelaide, the last ball actually grazed McDermotts helmet on the way to the keeper, might have been a bit of arm as well.
