Is there anyone in the know with Brisbane footy who knows why Sandgate were kicked out of Lemke Road and where they might be playing next year?

I have no inside knowledge, but the properties around the ground have seen many new houses spring up - I can only imagine the owner wants to turn the Lemke Rd property into residential blocks.

To be honest, as long as they can find a new ground I couldn't be happier - hate playing out there, it's the biggest ground in the world just about and always manages to be too bloody hot. ;)

It's AFLQ, not QSFL .... but thats just pedantics ! :)

I heard it was simply part of the Brisbane city council's urban development scheme and that area of land is worth a squillion for development. They've moved a number of football clubs on in the last few years.

As for where they go to, they have a ready made home locally if they want it, since the Brighton Rugby League Club closed its doors this year. I'm pretty sure they had 2 RL fields side by side, which is plenty of space.

Shame they have to move, as they've "always" been there and some of Queensland's best have played at old Lemke ! Not to mention the blood spilt on that patch of turf in the old Windsor-Zillmere v Sandgate wars .....

Also remember going up there to watch Jezza play in the early 80s.

I'd assumed that's what it might be, but had heard a theory on it not being safe to play on due to the fact there used to be a dump just up the creek from it at one stage in the 80's and there could be some seepage. But that sounded a bit fanciful to me.

Know what you mean about the size of the ground! I remember in u11's when they moved us from the juniors ground to the main oval.

Yeah, i've heard someone else mention the old Brighton Roosters ground. Wasn't aware they'd folded. Had a few mates who played league there.

AS a kid i remember watching Dunstall in the early 80s before he moved south. Got to meet Jezza when he was at Sandgate. He was my hero growing up and I remember looking into those steely blue eyes.

Thanks for the info guys. Hope it gets sorted soon.

The club stalwarts have done so much work to get themselves back under their own steam and with their old/own identity, I can't see it being the club's demise.

Being a Coorparoo boy, I learnt to hate sandgate over time, however this is all onfield in good old-fashioned interclub rivalry.

ps - Dunstall actually taught me how to kick properly in those great 80s days at Coorparoo. I'd come from a rugby league background and could torp for miles, but had no clue how to punt !

It won't be their demise - at the very least they've still got two guaranteed years in the AFLQ division two.

Still, after the pastings I've gotten from them, in junior, u/18 and senior footy, I wouldn't mind if they're a little weak for a year or two just so I can get one or two back. ;)

The club seems to have too much pride for that though. I'm sure they'll get through it.
