Tom Mullane-Grant at Bannockburn. Smokey in the GDFL?
GFL
1. Rick Wilde (Newtown)
2. Clinton Wells (Sth. Barwon)
3. Jim Cail (St. Mary's)
Smokey: Paul Hood (St. Joseph's)
Wells? gotta be kidding me! Aaron Greaves is by far the dominant tall forward in the GFL, as seen by his regular inclusion in the VCFL team.
Wouldn't say Wilde is the best, in top 5-6 for sure though. Heard the other day he's had an ankle reco, how long would that rule him out for?
Also newtown have lost Jay Bett, finished uni and had to move elsewhere to secure work.

I agree that Clinton Wells should be up there in the top few, it's hard to quantify his value to the team.........he plays everywhere, CHF, CHB, Ruck, Full forward, he's someone every team would love to have. Extremely versatile and as hard as they come. I also totally agree with Jimmy Cail......he's got a big tank & can go all day. Not so sure about Big Rick.....he's an absolute champion, but I think his body is struggling with the workload he had at Leopold. A Great move to Newtown where he gets to share the workload & prolong his career with a contender. My third choice would go to Mitch Barrow......this bloke is a deadset gun. Probably creeps under the radar a bit because he's out at Grovedale & Bluey takes all the attention away from his players but Mitch is one of the best recruits the GFL has seen in the last 10 years.
Honourable mentions to Warrick Knuckey, Dean Talbot and Jeremy Dyer.

On the news a couple of weeks ago they did a story on Aussie Jones and he was the coach of Narre Warren (i think). So there is no way he will be in the GFL.
But possibly the rumour may come about because Tony Brown is coaching Leopold and is an ex team mate of Aussie's at St Kilda.
And cmon Vaughany spill the beans on the other rumour.

Would love to have seen Xavier not get involved in this music business...he was a very good footballer. My old man rated him one of the best 15 y.o's he had seen back in the early 90's.

Wayne.. Kegga is one of the toughest players in the comp! He won the clubs B & F by a mile. Should move from the backline to the midfield this year. Great bloke also! Dan Madden also played pretty well in the second half of the season. Was injured at the start but played consistant footy when fit. Strathy won the Granny this year?

Heard whispers round the traps that Ocean Grove hav picked up a number of players and should be finals bound after a lean year, the first in 12 years it hasnt contested the grand final or finals. New coach Matthew Sproule had his boys start trainin 6 weeks ago and from all accounts they are flying. Ocean Grove hav picked up Jimmy Dalton probably one of the best recruits goin around. Sproule will probably be one of the best players in the bfl according to some insiders aswell as bringing players from the ballart league. Also past premiership players hav returned to help booast the experience round the club which includes Wayne Blake, Sam Murray (trainin the house down), Craig Fagan, Adrian Stapleton, Dan Leigh to just name a few. Also a bonus has been retainin young guns Liam Rock and Kelly Williams who hav been sort out by gfl clubs.

what a joke! I'll give you dalton, he's a good player. Murray, Fagan, Blake and stapleton???? This isn't super rules! Stapleton played twos last year, murray is fat as mud, Fagan was never any good, Blake was good but a year off at his age wouldn't sharpen him up. Ocean Grove have been extremely successful on field but off field are a joke. No profits, no stability. No hope of finals. teams above them will be Newcomb, Torquay, Modewarre, Queenscliff, Amateurs, Drysdale, Anglesea, and maybe Barwon Heads. And the new coach of Ocean Grove isn't worth the money, does he play?

I love it when people give it to Grove. You are correct, thoose players are old and i think will discover that the longer the season goes.
Although i will say Stapleton in his day was a good player.
Fagan and Blake agree.

Mate Dalton will be the one of the best players in the league. Stapleton played a couple of 2's games cause he wasnt gonna play but is trainin the house down, Fagan is tough as nails and we need those sort of players 2 help the young guys from last year. Dont question Murray he is a mound mountain and can play, as for Blake and absolute champion everyone is doin the preseason so i cant c why these guys cant play good bfl footy. You look at all the other teams last year they had bigger bodies and had older duds playin for them. As for the coach Matthew Sproule he can seriously play footy and will dominate this league easily. I like it when everyone gets up the grove cause in the end u no who always reins supreme, the grubbers.

Danny Stanley played senior football for Ocean Grove in 2004 at the age of 16, he hurt his shoulder in the first final and didnt play again, Kelly Williams also played senior footy all year because he was in his first year of falcons, both played really well

mate, if you look back through this thread i have said there are certain clubs throwing money at anyone who will listen.
it's also possible that these clubs can see that vaughany has potential as a strong, long kicking backman.
after all, he is still only 19 and has already played in the past two Joey's reserves premierships as a KP backman, worked over vessey in '04. also the sort of guy that all clubs would value having around!

Thomson more like it. Gerca is a great player but would struggle to make it into the Parks midfield. Heard they picked up a few from North Ballarat in the VFL and Daniel Lowther is also playing. They had a few more big names but can't quite remember.

Geelong West Blue (GDFL) are on the rise. Recruited two blokes from NSW state league due to one of them being the nephew of an assistant coach. They come down in March I think so not much time to get settled but should dominate for the cheetahs. Releases a bit of pressure from Andrew Spengler's shoulders! Also chasing either Lindsay Smith or Tim Van Der Klooster from Ammos also... dunno how that will pan out though.. East Belmont/Brad Edwards is going to be similar to last year. Expect to see them on the bottom with Anakie again. Bannockburn has apparently picked up Alister Woods from GWSP and Tommy Hall from North Shore along with some other North Shorians and Corio players.
Also heard that Llyton Richards and Trav Agg are leaving South Barwon or even retiring. Leopold along with other obvious recruits (Brown, Wright, Loats maybe) have got Paul Messar and Adam Holland from Queenscliffe.

Not that I care either way, but if Adam is contracted to the 'Coutas and wants to play with Leopold, he would get their on appeal..
Why? He'd argue a step up in competition. It has worked before and will wrk again.
And as for country footy contracts...not worth the paper they are written on.

Well.. I was speaking to someone at Leopold and they said that Adam Holland went to Leopold and Paul Messar followed. Thing is that Paul Messar needs to get a clearance from St. Joeys because he was at Q'Cliffe for a one year contract and the negotiate with Joeys for a longer contract at Q'Cliffe, go back to Joeys or go to another club. I'm 95 percent sure that both players have signed with Leopold because they agreed on the contract, they just needed a signature.

Flat track bully do you actually know what you are talking about. i have a relative that sits on the appeals board and he has informed me that the only way a player can loose an appeal is if he owes the club he is trying to leave money or property or he is contracted which is the case with Adam Holland. It is common knowledge that the GFL is a better standard across the board than the BFL but the simple fact is that they both have the same standings as major leagues which is all the appeal board looks at so your argument is wrong in this case although it doesnt matter because he is contracted. A contract is a legal binding document and thats how the appeal board will look at it.

Won't be any need for appeals. Heard Holland has been training at Queenscliff and will be playing there. The bloke will still dominate BFL with a team that will most likely make finals. Why would he go to a club like Leopold who have recruited 3 good players only and where everyone is talking premierships. They have a long long way to go.

Really, doesn't surprise me, but it was reported he had signed with South. Good luck to him, was stiff at Geelong.

Maybe the same people who are talking about Leopold taking a flag, work at the Sports section in the Geelong Advertiser, when Geelong win a game...:D

Queenscliff r the same every year, make up the numbers. Don't recruit many players and if they do they lose players so i cant c this club movin forward moment, As 4 Holland, he isnt a match winner nor does he dominate a game, Messer is probably the only match winner in the side. For Queenscliff 2 do anywell they shouldnt kick 15 metres sideways 2 Primmer all the time that wont win u games.

When was the last time u seen them play sandy snap or r u just talking out of your arse. They dont spend ******** loads of money like a lot of others and were very , very unlucky not to finish 3rd last year. they have improved every year for the past 6 years which is much better than being around for 2 years and then being ********house for the next 5 like alot of clubs we could mention. My spies tell me they have recruited very well this year and are very hungry to do well. Messer only played about 8 games last year and played 2 good ones. Far from match winner status. Holland was very good and has been for a long time. only time will tell i spose. U seem to know a fair bit about them with your post so what iss your connection to queenscliff.

You would be surprised how many club contracts turn out to be written by someone without any legal background in or around the club who reckons he's smart enough to draw up a contract, indeed, a great many contracts do not have any legal or qualified input what so ever.
Many of them unintentionally end up trying to deny a player or a Club's common law rights, and quite rightly end up getting laughed out of the appeals room when the time comes.
And on another point, I think you'll find out that FTB DOES know what he's talking about ..

Queenscliff have always been an honest side who are always very competitive. They were a bit unlucky last year. You are correct they probably do not spend heaps of money on players, but until they do they will have to be satisfied with only just making the finals, not winning premierships. Its unfortunate that money can buy premierships, just ask Newcomb, but thats the way country footy is. But they are a respected side and Steve Clark is a good coach.

My connection 2 Queenscliff is that i hav seen them play 4 years, played against them and know a few of their players quite well. As for bein up 4 2 years then house 4 the next 5 years take a look at ocean grove's record ova the last 13 years.

i take your point and agree with you but I am talking about the standard victorian country football league contract which is already written for you which is legally binding as long as you stick to its format and dont change anything. I can only go off the advice i was given from someone who sits on the appeals board.
In regards to FTB knowing what he was talking about i was referring to whether or not he knew about contracts or had experiences with them. Not his knowledge of football in general.

No worries. Hulkster makes a very valid point which has been raised before in regards to money. I agree u do have to spend the money or be content just to be competetive which is what has happened in Queenscliff case. In Ocean Grove case they spent a fortune to get their success and were even unable to pay their yearly fees to the competition for half a dozen years. You only have to look at them the last couple of years when they have stopped spending and had to go with youth. Damian Clark done a fantastic job with them in 2004 but 2005 is testament to the arguement. Who do you know from Queenscliff and what is their opinion on where they are at.

JAY CLARK
ONE of the fiercest debates in local football will be finally settled in May when the GFL and BFL clash in an under-25 rep game.
Football Geelong yesterday confirmed that it will pit the GFL's finest young talent against the best of the Bellarine during the bye round on Saturday, May 20, probably at Skilled Stadium.
It promises to be one of the most long-awaited grudge matches in years, as for many pundits it will finally decide which league's standard is superior after decades of debate.
Is it just me...but does Jay Clark (as with other Geelong Addy journo's who write local footy...Simeon Bennett who wrote last year that Glenn Keast coach North Shore's in all of their 6 straight between 1995-2000) have little idea.
In 1979 the Geelong Football League became the strongest league with its formation, bringing togther the BEST GDFL teams of the time. (North Shore, St.Mary's, Grovedale, N&C et al). Since then there has been NO debate on the stronger league. The debate has been between the GDFL abd BFL. I've lived in Geelong, Albury and Shepparton, and when the topic comes to the strongest football league in country Victoria, the GFL, O and M and GV are the three leagues consistently mentioned. I've never heard anybody mention the BFL.
The GFL started in 1979, and was immediately granted major league status, and have in that time won half a dozen country titles, that didn't come until around a decade later for the BFL, who have won a very ordinary division three title in the mid 1990's, and made the most of hosting last year.
Also, how does an under 25 game give a true indication?
Thoughts?

Bomber5. It depends on who you ask this question to.
If you ask any run of the mill supporter they will tell you 'the chief' is rather rotund and lazy, but with good tap ability, and a rather large mouth.
If you ask Dan himself he will surely tell you that he was robbed of the comp b&f and realistically should have been drafted 8 years ago,
Dan has a very high opinion of himself and refers to himself as 'the handle' because he is always carrying teams.
if you ask me it should be 'the hambuglar!'
the crafty theif who eats hambugers from the mcdonalds chain.

I think it does for sure it will give us a fair Indication where both comps are heading in saying that i think the GFL will smash them off the park with the likes off Newtown & North Sore's young guns Getting around, I dont think the BFL has the depth the the GFL has

Grovedale's Jereomy Larkham has been signed by Torin Bakers Camperdown. Also Geelong West Blue is set to play 5 games at West Oval this year and then set to play all their games at West Oval come 2007. In the 5 games this year, they may even hold a night match.

Is that because they are redeveloping Blue West's ground? Gee i hope that West Oval copes with the volume.
Or is this a genuine ground share permanently.

The council own Bakers Oval and "need" the ground for residential and other buildings, so really, within two years, West Blue won't have a ground and thats why they are trialing at West Oval. It could possibely become a shared ground but the problem West Blue face is that they may not be able to afford the lease of the West Oval. This may force them to play at surrounding grounds such as Drew Reserve or Elderslie Reserve because the expenses wouldn't be as high. Sadly in my opinion, its just another step to Blue West folding....

While we are on the topic of clubs folding, what previous Geelong clubs have folded or merged? Geelong West and St. Peters is the obvious one. Barwon and some one else formed Sth Barwon. Any more??
The Hulkster

It was Barwon and Belmont that folded and became Sth Barwon.
East Belmont became the Belmont Lions but they didnt fold.
Portarlington bacame Portarlington/St Leonards for 1 season before St Leonards folded.
Leigh Districts folded and reformed a number of years later and are now known as Inverleigh.
Thats all i can think of.
