I was just looking at my St Kilda St Kilda's Finest coffee cup (as i do everyday) with pictures of Harves, Loewe, Everitt, Winmar, Heatley and Burkey. Apart from Heatley being the obvious being the odd man out, I realised something..
Something that has been missing for a while now and yes we could link it down to all sorts of things.. Winmar.. The fire, the spark.. the energy..
I would remember back to when Winmar played and the weeks when he was off sidelined with suspension or injury.. during the game on those weeks we would always lack that spark.. that fire that Winmar would provide.. He would always pump up the side..
something I think is missing and has been for a while..

vaul i'll reminisce about the '91 side containing winmar, lockett, loewe, burke, harvey, frawley was still the best saints side i have seen, and that includes '97. hawthorn won the flag that year and we beat them by 10 goals + in the last or 2nd last round of the year. we should have beaten geelong in that final as we had a much better side on the park, but lost through a lack of finals experience. i sat next to david parken and his wife at the game which was an interesting experience. his wife who is a saints fan was going off her nanna during the game whilst parken didn't bat an eyelid in a game that was one of the great finals of the 90's.
i too miss winmars spark, skill, tackling, marking, kicking and his electrifying runs through the middle of the ground. i used to love it when sheldon put winmar on the ball, he not only got it he delivered it every time, a truly wonderful and gifted player. as a saints fan no one should forget the sight of winmar running down a wing with lockett leading out of goal, there was always the same result, ball delivered lace out, plugger kicking long and straight, animal cage roaring with delight.:D
lets hope that this current batch of youngsters and our new draft picks can form as good a combination as the batch of the late 80s and '90s but lets hope this time it's for a longer period of success.

You're being kind- I would've put the loss down to Ablett & his thuggery.
Stupid dirty thug- Ablett.

Yeah I agree that the 91+92 side was better than the 97 at the time and yes finals footy is at another level.. thus ablett thug..
Nicky Winmar was the greatest. No footballer has attracted my worship like he did/does (and I'm sure I'm not alone there). The most graceful player I've seen, as well as the most exciting.
As for Ablett, I've never forgiven him for taking out Burkey in 91. Dog. That was a great day though, which I'll always remember. I bawled my eyes out at the end of the game when we lost, but still, a great day.

Winmar was my favourite player when he was playing. He had that X-factor!
