Does anyone know how the Veterans List works? I know clubs are allowed to have up to two veterans but how does a player become eligible?

I have read with interest this week that Mick Martyn of the Kangaroos will be delisted and then picked up again in the draft so Wayne Carey can become part of the Veterans list.

As I understand it the Kangaroos will then only have to pay for half of Carey's salary and the other half will then be picked up by the AFL. It appears that the appointment of Michael Easy to the Kangaroos has found a hole in the Veterans List system.

Could Port also be thinking about doing something like this at the moment?

Currently our two Veteran players are Darren Mead and Stephen Paxman, the next available player to be on the Veterans List will be Gavin Wanganeen.

Darren Mead is currently uncontracted and Gavin Wanganeen is working out a new contract, could it be possible that Mead will be delisted only to be picked up again in the draft so Wanganeen can be part of the Veterans list?

With us only having to pay half of Wanganeens contract this would sure help if we were to have any problems with our salary cap.

Would Wanganeen be eligible?

I was surprised to find out that Hawthorn does not have any players on their list eligible to be a Veteran. Considering this could save a club $400,000 per year it is no wonder they had trouble retaining Trent Croad under the salary cap.

They have to be 30, and have been on our foundation list.

Mead and Paxman are going to be on the veterans list until they retire...by then, Wanganeen would be old enough to go on it.
