Harry Trott brigade look very strong this year, played De La today and won easily... really potent forward line with a few good options beside their new power forward recruit.
De La looked good early but faded in the second half, they looked very quick at times when they got it together... should upset many sides this year if they play all 4qtrs
Anyone see any other A grade games this week??? How are OI travelling anyone?

110 points was the final margin, De La affected by a wedding.
Not that those players would have made 110 points - the boys from Harry Trot will have a very good season

hopefully you dont get any injuries during the year nicho... we all know how much that plays a massive part during the year, and from memory your 2's weren't that flash last year..? so your making some big calls before a game has even been played... of course praccy matches dont count..

Congratulations on your August flags.
All I'm saying is this...Collegians beat pretty much a full strength De La team (who lost a few in the second half, who popped off to a wedding) by almost 20 goals, despite having most of their guns on the bench for a half and spraying some absolute doozies in front of goal. They're going to give your mob one hell of a run for their money and are going to create interest in a comp which, last year at least, was a little off the boil...

Nicho,
No one is denying the quality of the list that the OC have put together. What people are questioning is your decision to shoot your mouth off in April. In the fickle world that is VAFA football, I would have thought it would be better to stay quiet and let your football do the talking.
Tell us how good you are in October. Until then you're only setting yourself up for a fall.

What was so disinteresting about last year?
Old Brighton and Collegians both up there in mix. Just because they or another team didn't beat OX means last year was off the boil! I saw Brighton play and couldn't believe how quick they were - Unfortunately for them they obviously hadn't played on bigger grounds and that showed in the GF. Didn't see too much of last year but thought the standard was up a few cogs from the year before

It's good that there is some real quality coming into the comp.

But I would agree with the players coming in from country and suburban will increase the tempo AGAIN and Obviously your boys are hot to trott right now, which might explain why things might not pan out as you hope, wish or see. April Champs are the best aren't they?

I was there supporting a couple of mates at De La.
Anyone who watched Haileybury or St bernards last year or a Grand Final that was over at the 15 min mark of the first term, or a state match where we were beaten by a bunch of hunchbucks could argue that it was a vintage year for A Section football!! As you said yourself, you only saw a few games. But it was a mere blip on the comp and as one of the other posters said, there's a real buzz about proceedings this year...

What was the game like?
Pretty decent standard, however still very clearly a practice match for both sides with plenty of rotations and players in and out of various positions.
Scores were level at the beginning of the last with OI clearing out by a few towards the end of the term.
There was a bit of feeling in the game with a few boys being sent off including Heta for a late shot on the smallest bloke on the ground.

Sure is a real buzz and we'll have to wait to see who has the correct mail on teams. Again I AGREE WITH YOU regarding the standard THIS YEAR. It just goes to show (in my opinion) that even the hottest team/s (OB) can fall over at the last hurdle!

Don't get me wrong, Collegians looked damn good on Saturday against De La, one of the best A Grade lineups on paper for a long time, but I doubt they've got the depth to go all the way. Their two's lack talent, beaten well by De La on the weekend, and as we saw last year, the season is shaped by injuries and the form of players other than their ex-AFL stars.

In an effort to liven things up.
This weeks its St Bedes Mentone Tigers first ever game in A Grade and its against friendly arch-rival De La Salle.
The tension between the De La Salle brothers has been palpable of late. The St Bedes brothers have a new swagger in their steps and their chests are pumped out now that they are in A Grade. The Mentone brothers no longer clean up or cow tail to the Malvern brothers. Tensions have been so high of late that a memo from Reihms, France has been sent to the brothers residence to ease the pressure. The rumours circulating was not started by disgruntled Ajax or St Bernands or Old Essendon supporters. It was the De La Salle, Malvern brothers. Bro Bill former headmaster of St Bedes and current headmaster of DLS must be in damage control now dividing the factions.
The last time a memo from the De La Salle head office was back in 1937 when approval was given for the De La Salle brothers to open a catholic secondary college for boys in Mentone. After being shafted by Xavier and CBC St Kilda the De La Salle brothers agreed to open the college on behalf of the St Patricks parishioners. Back then Xavier just had Kostka Hall (sounds like a jewish synagogue) donated to them. Who said there was no rivalry with Xavier. It dates back to 1937, which incidentally is way before my wifes grandparents even migrated to Australia. I got the above facts after referring to the Leo Gamble history book on St Bedes. There was no mention of St Kevins. Maybe the parshioners of the time thought they were wankers anyway. We dont think that nowadays do we brianspeaking.
Now Peter Riordan, former St Bedes student, teacher and coach of the SBOC and currently the vice principal of De La Salle Malvern is bunkered down in his Beach Shack in Aspendale too scared to leave the house to buy the paper. On the way to work he wears a balaclava through Mentone or even drives via Dandenong to avoid running into people.
Current St Bedes College first XVIII coach Roger Grech spends his weekends in the Carlton Coaches box doing stats i am told. I hear that Ratts keeps asking him, how did you get to A Grade. What can we do at Carlton to win. Can i trade Murphy for one of the Wintles, what about Anstey for Carrazzo or how about Tyquin for Judd or one of the Scafidis for Bryce Gibbs. Nah sorry Ratts the boys are rapt where they are and Bevo has built an environment they all want to be a part of.
Anyway enough self indulgence for an old fart like me. Bring on season 2008 - i am looking forward to our first year in A Grade and good luck to the boys. This has been a work in progress for many years and guys like Dale, Matt Beasley, Johnny Meyer, the other Beasleys etc have devoted many years to the club.

If I could also indulge:
> De La Salle purchased the old McCristal property and several adjoining to build St. Bede’s in 1938.
> they won its 1st senior football flag in 1953 against Melbourne’s big Catholic Colleges.
> St. Bede’s has never restricted entry to students on the basis of academic performance however some have argued for a more restrictive entry but the De La Salle Brothers have stuck to their founder’s ideal for over 300 years. The Order was set up to teach the poor in a 17th century France when the nobility treated the lower classes with contempt. St. Bede’s exists in a totally different world (mmmm!!) but its guiding philosophy still rejects social exclusiveness.
> St. Bede’s has produced several Olympians, perhaps the most notable being Peter Fitzgerald a semi-finalist in the 200 metres at the 1976 Montreal Games. There have also been Gerard Healy, Brownlow Medallist, 1987, and Sean Graf who represented Australia at one day cricket in the 1980’s. Thousands of other graduates have made a contribution to our society including Pat Carey & Jon O'Connor in the horse training field.

VAFA warns clubs on pay
Paul Amy
20Mar08
THE rumours have been circulating for weeks.
One amateur club, supposedly, pays its star ruckman.
Another has, purportedly, arranged for the children of a high-profile recruit to attend a private school, fee-free.
And then, there's the story about the player getting a new kitchen to play in the VAFA this year.
If all this was true, the clubs facing the accusatory fingers would be in breach of the association's rules and face serious consequences.
VAFA officials are so concerned about the talk of "incentives" to recruit or retain players, they have written to clubs reminding them that "the amateur embodiment" is "the cornerstone" of the competition.
In a letter to club presidents, VAFA president Nick Bourke said his board had received some "well-based information" relating to "what may be clear breaches of our rules".
He said the clubs and players involved would be called in to VAFA head office to discuss "what we all hope are baseless rumours".
Bourke stressed that any club found breaking the rules which boil down to a player being unable to receive reward or remuneration would be fined and demoted.
"As a former-player, club and state coach I understand that much of the innuendo surrounding some VAFA players receiving payment is untrue, foundless and instigated, mainly, by outside bodies or disgruntled members of our association," he said.
"Likewise, I am not so naive as to assume that our rules, at times, are being abused to varying degrees.
"The VAFA board, under chairman Bruno Conti, is absolutely adamant that our competition not be tarnished or compromised by those prepared to risk their and the VAFA's integrity for the sake of recruiting a player."
VAFA football operations manager Jeremy Bourke told the Leader that, before the start of the season, every club president, secretary, treasurer and member were required to sign an affidavit stating that, to their knowledge, no players were receiving payment.
"If we found out that's incorrect, they've not only broken our rules, they've broken the law," Bourke said.
He said the spirit of the rules allowed for "minimal rewards", such as a towel or mug for being the best player.
Bourke said he believed players chasing money elsewhere were responsible for some of the rumours.
"There are players out there who, when questioned by clubs from other competitions, want to see how much they can get and, when they're asked how much do they think they're worth, they say, 'Well, I reckon I could get $500 or $600'. Automatically, that's taken as a given that they're receiving money from the amateurs," he said.
"We're confident that's not the case.
"Some players put a price on their head because they want to bump up their price and probably also their ego.
"When they're trying to play one club off against another, there's not a lot we can do to stop it."
While the very structure of the competition restricts clubs' ability to raise money to pay players the VAFA has no gates and a no-alcohol sales policy Bourke admitted there "might be a level of concern" with supporters or members "supporting" a player outside legitimate employment.
"In these circumstances, it is difficult to police," he said.
"We will continue to have our clubs sign their affidavits and put on a legal document that they're abiding by the rules, and investigate any areas of concern."
The VAFA season starts on April 12
Does this mean the VAFA will be "investigating" this "well based information?"

Hi NOTR,
actually there was a club that had a similar rise through the grades - many, many years ago - Ivanhoe AFC. They still hold the VAFA record of - (I think ?) 61 straight wins - on the way to A grade. Dosen't help that much now we are down in D2, but still something to be proud of as club for past glory.
I will now get out of this thread - the altitude is killing me being up this high !!

[quote=Lance Burkhardt;10603528]VAFA warns clubs on pay
Cheers Lance..
..........VAFA football operations manager Jeremy Bourke told the Leader that, before the start of the season, every club president, secretary, treasurer and member were required to sign an affidavit stating that, to their knowledge, no players were receiving payment.
"If we found out that's incorrect, they've not only broken our rules, they've broken the law," Bourke said.
I have said it once and I'll say it again, registered players in Ammos, especially A & B grade sign a Stat. Dec. stating same. Bring the accountability back to the INDIVIDUALS not the ENTITY and then things will go from there.

jeeze... any more pointless school history lessons anyone wants to share with us??
I thought this was a football thread, not a "de la bought some dudes property to build a school, and is based on a sect from the illuminate of 300 yrs ago.." history thread..
nothing against you yack, i like where this started.. just not sure where its heading..
UH, St. Bede’s was a success despite the scattered collection of old and temporary buildings it occupied. War restrictions and cash shortages kept physical conditions primitive (sounds like Brindisi St).
http://localhistory.kingston.vic.gov.au/img/article/39_2s.jpg (http://localhistory.kingston.vic.gov.au/img/article/39_2.jpg)
UH, the above photo shows the old Wooden Classrooms constructed in 1944 and demolished in 1970. However through Brother Alban, a dynamic business-oriented man he bullied parents, bankers and anyone with some clout, to build a complex of classrooms and other facilities in a period of financial stringency.

UH, the above photo shows the steering committee viewing the planned developments at St Bede’s 1963. I have a feeling the guy 3rd left was BrianSpeaking's old man.
UH its all about sharing the knowledge, a little quote for you if I may -:
Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked. Lord Chesterfield (http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Lord_Chesterfield/)

Hi NOTR,
actually there was a club that had a similar rise through the grades - many, many years ago - Ivanhoe AFC. They still hold the VAFA record of - (I think ?) 61 straight wins - on the way to A grade. Dosen't help that much now we are down in D2, but still something to be proud of as club for past glory.
I will now get out of this thread - the altitude is killing me being up this high !!

Yeah, my sherpa was a little worried, but threw me in to the PAC unit for 30 mins and they are now moving me slowly back down the grades .......something I have been very familiar with over my playing career.
Chump.
Well if we're sharing a bit of history around....
Collegians Football Club is the oldest club in Amateur football; indeed, it is older than the VAFA, of which it is a founding member. In 1891, L.A.Adamson established a Wesley Old Boys’ XVIII. In the following year, that club formally became Collegians Football Club.
L.A.Adamson, who was for thirty years the Headmaster of Wesley College, was the President of the Club for its first forty years. In 1892, Adamson established the Metropolitan Junior Football Association (of which he was President for thirty-seven years), which in 1932 became the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The ‘A’ Section Grand Final Cup is known as the ‘L.A.Adamson’ Cup. Adamson was driven by his religiously held conviction that games could generate loyalty and character.
Collegians certainly have a proud VAFA history.

Thanks UH - I will be interested in the new site - my old man played alot of VFA footy for Brighton in the 40 & 50's and Im interested to see if there was any overlap in terms of players he played with and any JV facilities.

Lets not forget that the collegian seniors had 10 on the bench, plus a number of players not playing. The 2nds had a limited bench as well, with the added numbers dropping down to the 2's, i will say this much the 2's at collegians will be competitive so don't under estimate them.
Not greatly informed on all clubs at the moment but for what it's worth my tips for the weekend:-
Brighton over Scotchies by 18
Collegians over Trinity by 36
De La over St Bedes by 1 point - my upset for the round
Blacks to beat Ivanhoe 10 points
Blues over Xavs by 14 - from memory Xavs nearly allways drop the first couple
A DLS win is a big call, however I think they can do it after seeing some moments of blistering speed last week.... they will need to play all 4qrts!!!

OTP - to be fair, you're twisting that stat enormously.
The 29% represents those who think STBMT winning A grade is more likely than the alternatives - namely Camberwell winning B grade, Oakleigh winning C, and so on.
It's not 29% predicting they will win at all.
Just thought it should be placed in the correct context. I'd be confident of that 29%, the vast majority would agree it's only a remote possibility.

Pretty happy the real footy is back this weekend. Let's hope the little men in white (or whatever colour they decide to wear this week) don't attempt to ____ up the game like those those muppets in the AFL.
The first round always throws up an interesting result or two. Who would be considered 'favourites' for St Bedes vs De La tomorrow? Up and coming B Grade against a consistent A Grade side?
