OTP and Scribe just slipping away from the huge peloton behind them...
Having said that, I have my doubts about them being able to put together a competitive enough unit this week against SBMT, unless there are a few coming back that I am unaware of.[/quote]
Who's going to go in as the underdog? Collegians red hot favourites this week, even with a few injuries. SBMT still have plenty of injuries worries. Any win by them at the minute is simply a bonus.

That was a real disgrace. For a bloke like Clint Harris to not be able to get back up, then you know he's been hit hard. Those Scotch supporters abusing a bloke coming off on a stretcher after being knocked out should be ashamed of themselves.
Thats why Scotch are the second most despised club in the VAFA behind the jackoffs. Front running fairy supporters who are also quick to kick their team if they arent playing well.
On other VAFA matters, saw one of the best A Section games I have watched in the last 10 years on Saturday between St Bedes and Old Brighton. Superb game full of higlights including the Tigers 3rd q comeback and the Tonners last 6 minute, 5 goal comeback.
Also saw one of the funniest things Ive seen with Pirrie making love to his dog, I think its name is scratch or 'snatch'(I hope not!) at 3/4 time. Can one of you OB lads enlighten us as to the relationship between man and dog?

Brian,
I couldn't get to the game but I hear it was a cracker. whats your take on both sides chances this year? i haven't seen either play unfortunately.

It really depends on the side that Collegians will be able to put on the park. If, as i suspect, they have up to 9-10 walk up starters missing, i dont think they will have the cattle to maintain their undefeated record.
Having said that, all players that have stepped up so far this season have performed admirably, and either way this should be a cracking match.

I actually liked it. Pirrie and his dog. Yep, thumbs up. Reminds me of the time a guy rocked up to our footy club and played with us in a praccy game against Strathmore. Poor guy's playing back pocket and going all right until he was attacked by a pit bull at quarter time and almost mauled half to death. Never saw him again.
So thumbs up to Pirrie and Snappy!

Horn, I thought it was very funny, one of the funnier things I have seen for a while, the gun player and his sidekick.
As far as the clubs go, St Bedes travelling nicely just looking to firstly win enough games to stay in A Section whilst Brighton are very strong around the ball, much like Old Scotch. OB will certainly be up there this year.
A Section from what I have seen this year appears to be heading back to the lofty hights of 5 years ago, whilst the gulf between it and B Section appears to be lengthening again, which is good for VAFA footy.

BS,
Maybe its time we applaud M Sholly and R Evans for the current standard due to the ability of clubs to recruit ex AFL/VFL players into the fold. Granted many good player has left the comp, but after an analysis of which clubs have the most ex AFL/VFL or players currently floating between VFL and VAFA, there is a direct correlation to the no. of players and the teams position on the ladder.
Coll - Lots
OS - Many
St. Bedes - Lots
OX - Lots
UB - Several
OB - Less
OI - If there lucky 1
OT - At best 2
UBla - Pask and Bolton
De La - Rayson, Gotch and maybe one other
The overall standard is good, but there is a big differnce between the top and bottom clubs skill level (assessed over a full 4 quarters).
Thanks MS and RE

Agree – in 12 months, the standard has definitely picked up with the top six teams or so. Much bigger gulf between good and bad this year however.

Maxxy, you are a little misguided in your comments. AFL/VFL/SANFL players were always automatically granted re-instatement as long as they hadnt detoured via a money club like Balwyn. The Sholly folly was created to allow $$$ players from $$$ clubs into the comp, a rule I dont like.

It was an absolute disgrace... Clint Harris is probably the toughest bloke at collegians, he was knocked out cold in a marking contest and his eye brow was hanging down at his cheek, he requires plastic surgery. The game was stopped for about 5 minutes as he was carried off. The tool in the tartan hat and tweed jacket that was abusing him as he lay on the stretcher should be ashamed of himself... this sort of stuff happens with juiced up fans in the southern league and doesn't/shouldn't happen in our comp.
Should be a belta at headquarters on saturday with the tigers hosting the lions, the lions have a few injury concerns although may be getting a few back. Any injuries to speak of down at brindisi st?
typical from supporters on the sidelines.... i bet you this bloke sleeps with the lights on,,,, Scotch fag

Penski you nuffy, I'm sick of reading "10-15 players to come back into the side", give it a rest for f*cks sake. How about you stop belittling the blokes getting the job done at the moment as being mere part-timers.
Every club has injuries, but only certain clubs seem to want to constantly remind us of their plight. Are you trying to float an excuse early in case your club goes to water once again this year?

Nuffy??! Hit the wines too hard last night did we? not feeling at our best this morning?
My post highlights the fact that there is more depth at the Lions than people were saying after the first few rounds, that those that have come up have perfomed well, which is the point of the post. (Gee, nothing about belittling anyone there that I can see)
Do i need to type a little slower for you next time so you can keep up?
How about you go trolling elsewhere for a while.

so, where do we stand this year so far?
is there a changing of the guard at the top?
are St. Bedes the real thing?
Have Scotch proven themselves yet?
Are Brighton no chance?
De La and Uni Blacks Gone?
Plenty of questions so far, and noone seems to be able to answer them yet. Lets take a closer look at these questions, and see if we can come up with where A Grade stands.
Collegians - are they the best? on paper yes, but Scotch gave them a huge run on the weekend minus Houlihan, McRae, Thompson and one or two others. Stop Watts and they are done? Not necessarily, because they also have Stone amongst others.
St. Bedes - got beaten by Scotch, but have carried all others before them. Have stood up well in the heat of A Grade aside from Anzac Day. Anstey is class as is Wintle the ruckman. How far can they go?
Scotch - where have they come from? Steven Lawrence has been wonderful, and McRae is a great addition. Can they continue? Played well against Collegians after a very slow start. They appear to be the real thing.
Xav's - typical slow start. will always be working themselves into things the longer the season goes on. Fleming is very good, and Lethlean appears to have got things right. Can they chalenge? Write them off at your peril.
Uni Blues - Gleeson, Lowcock, and the usual suspects have been joined by a couple of U19's who appear to be capable of playing senior football. Kanis will back his players all the way, sometimes to his detriment. They will be a threat however.
Brighton - played a cracker against St. Bedes on the weekend, yet still lost. Are they right at the top of their game? HUGE ruckman, but have lost a couple of key players from last year. Still got question marks hanging over them.
Ivanhoe - not much known. Heta is still there, but Hope is a huge loss. They will do well to stay up in A Grade, but appear to be better than some teams below them.
Trinity - New coach, but not making a massive difference. have a couple of class players, but will they be good enough to keep them from the drop? They will need to be at their best to avoid it.
Uni Blacks - were supposed to be another glamour team coming to A Grade. Pask and Bolton were going to be the "X" Factor. This is yet to happen. Coach allegedly under the pump with a rumour he may be on the way out already. Struggling and probably in the box seat to be relegated at this early stage.
De La - Gone? can we call it this early? Probably not. But they will have to improve. For a club whose U19 have won the past 2 Premier Grade premierships, they should be doing a lot better. Where are all the kids going?
These are merely questions that probably need looking at and disecting from both sides. Lets look at them realistically and work through. This is not a hammering of any club, i believe this is a fair assessment of where each club currently sits. There is no malice or nastiness in it, i have merely observed what is happening from a neutral point of view

Ok. I am biased, but then again, everyone is.. remember, this is only MY opinion..
so, where do we stand this year so far?
is there a changing of the guard at the top?
are St. Bedes the real thing? yes, good a-grade side, but not premiership contenders
Have Scotch proven themselves yet? no.
Are Brighton no chance? yes they are
De La and Uni Blacks Gone? yes.
- can be beaten, but yes, clearly the team to beat this year.. you'll have to play very well to beat them though..
St. Bedes - got beaten by Scotch, but have carried all others before them. Have stood up well in the heat of A Grade aside from Anzac Day. Anstey is class as is Wintle the ruckman. How far can they go? - top 4 possibly, but not premiership contenders..
Scotch - where have they come from? Steven Lawrence has been wonderful, and McRae is a great addition. Can they continue? Played well against Collegians after a very slow start. They appear to be the real thing. - same as above.. I think it will be out of st bedes and scotch to make top 4, and stbedes to take the honours..
Xav's - typical slow start. will always be working themselves into things the longer the season goes on. Fleming is very good, and Lethlean appears to have got things right. Can they chalenge? Write them off at your peril. - they'll be fine.. another finals series coming up.
Uni Blues - Gleeson, Lowcock, and the usual suspects have been joined by a couple of U19's who appear to be capable of playing senior football. Kanis will back his players all the way, sometimes to his detriment. They will be a threat however. - most likely just making up the numbers, but could cause a few upsets to throw around the top 4 towards the end.
Brighton - played a cracker against St. Bedes on the weekend, yet still lost. Are they right at the top of their game? HUGE ruckman, but have lost a couple of key players from last year. Still got question marks hanging over them. - didn't start as well as last season, due to half the team having interrupted pre-seasons.. will make top 4
Ivanhoe - not much known. Heta is still there, but Hope is a huge loss. They will do well to stay up in A Grade, but appear to be better than some teams below them. - same as uni blues.. i dont think they can challange the top, but will stay well away from relegation.
Trinity - New coach, but not making a massive difference. have a couple of class players, but will they be good enough to keep them from the drop? They will need to be at their best to avoid it. - on/off team.. can cause up upset here and there, but will be trying to avoid relegation for another year..
- just seem to be a little bit off the pace each week... not quite there just yet, will head back down..
De La - Gone? can we call it this early? Probably not. But they will have to improve. For a club whose U19 have won the past 2 Premier Grade premierships, they should be doing a lot better. Where are all the kids going? - gone. even with their "ins" of last week still got worked..
please attack at will..
EDIT: the reference to "top 4" means the teams to play finals come seasons end.. not during the season..

Here are my answers - I haven't seen all these sides play so there are a few assumptions here:
Collegians - are they the best? on paper yes, but Scotch gave them a huge run on the weekend minus Houlihan, McRae, Thompson and one or two others. Stop Watts and they are done? Not necessarily, because they also have Stone amongst others. Clear flag favourites - may drop one or two but that is it. Stopping Watts a huge factor but he only kicked 4 on the weekend and they still won
St. Bedes - got beaten by Scotch, but have carried all others before them. Have stood up well in the heat of A Grade aside from Anzac Day. Anstey is class as is Wintle the ruckman. How far can they go?
Yet to see them play but results have been impressive. They said on the 'Ammos Show' that their best players in their thumping of OT were VFL releases. How far they go may depend on their availability
Scotch - where have they come from? Steven Lawrence has been wonderful, and McRae is a great addition. Can they continue? Played well against Collegians after a very slow start. They appear to be the real thing.
Not the hapless unit that a lot of people predicted pre-season. Can they keep it up? May battle if Lawrence gets injured - how many does Mcrae Play?
Xav's - typical slow start. will always be working themselves into things the longer the season goes on. Fleming is very good, and Lethlean appears to have got things right. Can they chalenge? Write them off at your peril.
Will play finals - and you know what they do in September.
Uni Blues - Gleeson, Lowcock, and the usual suspects have been joined by a couple of U19's who appear to be capable of playing senior football. Kanis will back his players all the way, sometimes to his detriment. They will be a threat however.
They run well (seen them a couple of times) but I'm not sure if they will be around come September. Are they big enough?
Brighton - played a cracker against St. Bedes on the weekend, yet still lost. Are they right at the top of their game? HUGE ruckman, but have lost a couple of key players from last year. Still got question marks hanging over them.
Gun midfield should see them win enough games to make the four
Ivanhoe - not much known. Heta is still there, but Hope is a huge loss. They will do well to stay up in A Grade, but appear to be better than some teams below them.
Hope is a huge loss - won't get relegated - mid table.
Trinity - New coach, but not making a massive difference. have a couple of class players, but will they be good enough to keep them from the drop? They will need to be at their best to avoid it.
I think they are in trouble.
Uni Blacks - were supposed to be another glamour team coming to A Grade. Pask and Bolton were going to be the "X" Factor. This is yet to happen. Coach allegedly under the pump with a rumour he may be on the way out already. Struggling and probably in the box seat to be relegated at this early stage.
the coach under the pump is just Brian Speaking stiring the pot. Thwy will do enough to stay up, just.
De La - Gone? can we call it this early? Probably not. But they will have to improve. For a club whose U19 have won the past 2 Premier Grade premierships, they should be doing a lot better. Where are all the kids going?
Word is that De La are already preparing for an assault on the B section Flag in 09. Best side they could have last week with some star VFL ins and still no result. Will bounce back with a bevy of young talent in coming years.
So finally;
top 4 :
Collegians
Brighton
Scoth
XAVS[B][I]
B section 09

Now I'm no De la supporter, just in close cohorts with a number of their players. And we all remember a game in 2002, when SKOBS were 5-0 and De la were 0-5 and De la won and SKOB, bless them, were never quite the same again...

you'd definately be going back a few years hornet.. my memory doesn't serve me too well, but we drew and had a loss last year. Didn't play each other the year before, and I think lost both (maybe 3 because of finals) games to them the year they went up.. That brings us to 2004 which I can't remember as thats as far as my memory can go unfortunately..

Sadly, no amount of non-$$$ incentive will match what those lads have been getting for their efforts in the past 5 years. Both have decent jobs already, and are paid top dollar in their respective leagues.
Noticed one BIG CAT roaming around the 2nds forward line in his return from a knee reco.
He is the sort of class player the OTs need, so I'd expect him to step back in pretty soon if the knee's getting through game time.

Probably not in the forefront of most opposition coaches' plans in 2007, but a runner up in the league B&F might have resulted in him shooting to the top of the 'OT players to negate' list in 2008??

In fairness to Iezzi, he busted his ankle or foot over the summer and did very little pre-season, in fact was on crutches for most of the summer months. Will take him a while to get back into it i would think.

Whom were all 18 year old kids playing their first senior game for the club.
Wouldnt read too much into it.
If Phibbs can make it onto the track for St Bedes in the second half of the season, it will give the Tigers a massive boost.
Hes the best player at the club, by quite a margin.

In all seriousness I hope SBMT do well but don't quite make the finals, setting them up for a good run next year like Collegians this year. I'm tired of all these B Grade sides coming up and proclaiming themselves as champions in the first quarter and a bit of the season.
Note: I'm not referring to you Seymour, just to a bit of a general sentiment that has been coming from down that way.
Having said that, this is my tip for the ladder at the end of the year:
Coll
Xavs
SBMT
Scotch
Brighton
Blues
Ivanhoe
Trinity
Blacks
De La
But I would like to see Brighton replace SBMT and also Blacks jump over OT's - they've been flirting with relegation for so long now that it's time to pull the finger out and just go for it.

OB vs DLS - OB still sooking after last week, DLS ready to break the shackles
OS vs OI - Scotch to get up by a few goals
Blacks vs Blues - sentiment aside, Blues too proud to let Blacks in with a sniff
SBMT vs Coll - lots of bragging rights for the winner, I don't think StB are good enough just yet
OT vs OX - Xavs in a canter
Shitloads riding on this round, reputation to keep up and Frase breathing down my neck. Nasty feeling that picking De La will be my undoing. Two points clear or level pegging with Scribe? We'll know on Sunday...

Watched a high quality game at EP today, St Bedes winning by 18 points after being in control most of the day, both sides with a lot of injuries but still a lot of quality running around. Other winners were OB, OS and Uni Blues, with Blacks managing just 1 goal for the game.

some class players is what is needed for the lower teams, OT would die for old boys Matt Greig (vermont) and Mark Passador (eagles, SA) to be roaming across the fwd line
OT should approach Passador now, WILL return home to Vic at the end of this season

Considering OS have beaten OB, UB and STBM i'd get on them at $40.
I have seen a number of teams this year and so far Coll, STBM & OS have been the most impressive, still not sure about Xav's, I have seen them against Coll (not very impressed with them that game) and OI where they dominated but as we all know they play the best footy when it counts. Should be a cracker at Toorak park this week

Xavs are fearing the upcoming Scotch clash. Difference in class between the two teams is extrememly large Axelman. We all know it gets ugly when Scotchies run out agains the Xavs.

a well deserved win by the boys from mentone, they adapted to the conditions and completely out played the lions all day.... st bedes inaccuracy made the score alot closer than the game really was. I doubted it, but it appears st bedes may be the real deal.
Not sure what arrogance you're referring to killer, besides nicho magic (who is a fool) i thought the boys from the trott seemed to be keeping a lid on things. Would you mind elaborating killerwasp? i am interested to know about the boys getting ahead of themselves, if they are.

not sure who your refering to Killerwasp.. Collegians have been very proud of the efforts this year, and why wouldn't they. Good win by Bedes on the weekend, did you noticed the 2nds got done by the "depth-less filled side Collegian seconds" as many have called them. Nicho magic is a spud no one at the club know's who he is but he doesnt speak for us all when you refer to the arrogance issue. If there is ppl being arrogant it isnt the players, very level headed bunch that don't let much out of the bag regarding being the best.

Great win by the St Bedes in the battle of the big cats at HQ on the weekend. Conditions kept big Fergus relatively quiet but nothing should be taken away from the boys from Brindisi, a solid win against what seems to be the bench mark of the comp.
Hopefully they can maintain their current form for the rest of the season.
I think the loss will give the Lions a massive kick in the coight. Expect them to step it up to a new level when they return to Sportscover again next week. Could be a very long day for the Blacks.

It was going to be a very long day anyway, I'd suggest.
Oh and BS - it was previously mentioned about "filling in the gaps", I think the fairest way would be to give the same number of picks as the worst-performing tipster for that week. That way you don't accrue an unfair advantage.
Anyone disagree with that plan?

Just seemed to come out of nowhere, which made it all the more astounding.
Anyhow, its been removed (whether by a mod or otherwise) so its best we all move on, and discuss how OTs will dismantle OI at Chelsworth......hopefully with plenty of lads back in from Sunday's line-up, and the Big Cat prowling around the goal square.;)

Don't think OT's are in a position to dismantle anyone at the moment Blade, May has been a forgetable month for the crew on Bulleen Road and i've heard rumblings that they may not have gone 100% at Xavs on Sunday preferring to keep one eye on this weeks game. I personally find it inconceivable that any side would think like this, especially when competing in a relegation system.

Is it true that the polish hurdling coach was giving a demonstration at training and hit and fell at the 3rd hurdle and done himself a mischief?
Now the New Zealand hurdling team representatives have made 'forceful' enquiries as to the services of the part time polish coach.
